Can you fly Johor Bahru to the Maldives directly?
No. Route data we checked on 11 October 2026 showed no nonstop flight from Senai International to Male. Malaysia's only nonstop Maldives flights leave from KLIA.
That leaves Johor travellers with a genuine choice between two hubs. The departure planning hub covers every Malaysian airport; this page focuses on the KLIA or Changi question.
KLIA or Changi: side by side
Both routes get you to Male the same day. They differ in border steps, currency and arrival times.
| Factor | Via KLIA | Via Singapore Changi |
|---|---|---|
| First leg | Senai to KLIA flight, or drive | Road across the Causeway or Second Link |
| Maldives nonstop | AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air | Singapore Airlines (Scoot appears suspended) |
| Flight time to Male | About 4h15 to 4h25 | About 4h35 (aggregator data) |
| Arrival times in Male | About 09:50, 11:25 and 21:55 | Check the current Singapore Airlines timetable |
| Border crossings outbound | Malaysian exit at KLIA only | Malaysian exit at the land border, Singapore entry and exit |
| Fare currency | Ringgit | Often quoted in Singapore dollars |
| Missed-connection risk | Low on one booking from Senai | You carry road and border delays |
The KLIA arrival times come from a Traveloka sample schedule. Singapore Airlines times should be read on its own site, because frequency differs across sources.
When KLIA makes more sense
KLIA suits most Johor travellers. You stay in Malaysia, pay in ringgit and can put Senai and Male on one booking.
It is the natural choice for seaplane resorts, because the AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals leave plenty of daylight. The KLIA flight planning guide compares those three flights in detail.
When Changi is worth pricing
Changi can work if you live in southern Johor, travel outside peak border hours, and find a fare that compares well once bags are included.
Count the border crossing honestly. Queues at the Causeway and Second Link can swing from minutes to hours, so leave a buffer large enough that a slow crossing does not cost you the flight. Our page on Johor travellers flying via Changi or KLIA runs the trade-offs at more depth.
A decision rule for Johor travellers
Use this quick rule, then confirm with real fares for your dates.
- Seaplane resort and a short trip: KLIA on one booking, morning Maldives flight.
- Male-area island or Maafushi, flexible arrival: price both; pick the lower all-in fare after bags.
- Family with lots of luggage: KLIA, to avoid moving bags across a land border.
- Singapore-based work schedule or Singapore dollars to spend: Changi often fits better.
Who carries the risk on each route?
On one KLIA booking from Senai, the airline must re-accommodate you if the domestic leg is delayed. Your island transfer is still separate, so tell the resort if your arrival changes.
On the Changi route, the road leg is your responsibility. A slow border crossing that makes you miss check-in is not covered by the airline. Travel insurance may help; read the missed-departure wording.
What to compare in the final fares
Two fares from different hubs are rarely priced the same way. Line them up on the same basis before deciding.
- Bags included or not. Full-service fares usually include checked bags. Low-cost fares from KLIA often do not.
- Currency and card fees. A fare in Singapore dollars may carry a foreign currency charge on a Malaysian card.
- Ground costs. Add the Senai flight, the drive, parking, tolls or a cross-border transport fare, plus any airport hotel.
- Time cost. A cheaper route that needs an overnight may cost a holiday day as well as money.
- Maldives departure charges. Reports put the Airport Development Fee at USD 50 for foreign economy passengers, normally inside the ticket. Check it appears in both fare breakdowns.
Once both totals are on the same basis, put the winner into the trip cost calculator with your island costs.
Matching the route to your island
The hub matters less than the Male arrival time. A seaplane resort needs you on the ground by about 15:30, so a morning KLIA flight is the reliable pick.
For a Changi routing, read the Singapore Airlines arrival time for your date before choosing a seaplane resort. If it lands late, choose a speedboat resort or plan a night near the airport. For Maafushi or Hulhumale stays, either hub generally works.
Who each route suits
Honeymooners and families usually find KLIA simpler. Budget travellers and friend groups living near the border sometimes save with Changi. Older travellers often prefer KLIA with a night near the airport, which removes both road and border risk.
Schedules and fares change often; route details were checked on 11 to 12 October 2026.
