Maldives resort or local island quiz for Malaysian travellers

You know you want the Maldives but cannot decide between a guesthouse on a local island, a resort, or a mix of both.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Budget, alcohol, dress code and transfer time decide most of it. Travellers under about RM5,000 per person who dress modestly and skip alcohol usually fit a local island guesthouse best, while couples who want a private villa, a sunset drink and the scenic flight fit a seaplane resort. The quiz below ranks five stay styles from your answers and explains why.

    How to use the quiz

Answer the questions you are sure about and leave the rest on "Not sure yet". The ranking updates with every answer and appears once you have answered three.

The eight questions cover budget per person with flights, drinks, privacy, swimwear, transfer time, reefs, who is travelling and comfort level. Each answer adds or removes points for five stay styles: a local island guesthouse, a split stay, a speedboat resort, a seaplane resort and a liveaboard.

The top style shows a short description. Every style in the ranking lists the answers that helped it ("Fits because you chose") and the answers that counted against it. The top two also show their main trade-offs and a topic hub to read next, such as local island travel or resorts and stay choices.

You can copy the result as text or send it with your trip brief. Nothing is saved or sent until you choose to.

    The rules behind the scoring

The weights follow a few fixed facts that shape every Maldives stay. They come from official and operator sources checked on 11 October 2026.

FactWhat it means in the quiz
Alcohol is sold only on resorts, liveaboards and licensed tourist facilities"A sunset drink is part of the holiday" pushes local islands down hard
Local islands expect shoulders and knees covered, swimwear on bikini beaches only"Swimwear anywhere" counts against local islands; "I dress modestly anyway" helps them
Seaplanes fly only in daylight, transfers cost about USD 400 to 820 per adult returnA short-transfer answer counts against seaplane resorts
Green Tax is USD 6 at small guesthouses and USD 12 at resortsLow budgets favour local islands
The shared speedboat to Maafushi is about USD 25 each wayLocal islands score well for short, cheap transfers

Children under six count strongly against a liveaboard and in favour of a speedboat resort, where the transfer is short. Budget answers are per person, with return flights from Kuala Lumpur included. To check what your budget really buys, use the trip cost calculator in ringgit.

Worked example 1: a budget trip for two friends

Two friends in their twenties answer all eight questions: under RM5,000 each, alcohol not needed, happy with village life, modest dress, a transfer under an hour, a few snorkelling sessions, adults only, clean and simple rooms.

The quiz ranks a local island guesthouse first with 18 points, then a split stay with 7, a speedboat resort with 2 and a seaplane resort at minus 8. The liveaboard is hidden because reefs are not their main reason for going.

The trade-offs shown are the lowest cost (USD 6 Green Tax and a short shared speedboat) and the local rules on alcohol and swimwear. A sensible next step is to compare two or three islands with the local island comparison worksheet.

Worked example 2: a honeymoon couple with a bigger budget

A couple answers five questions: over RM20,000 each, a sunset drink is part of the holiday, a private villa, a seaplane is part of the fun, and full resort service. They leave swimwear, reefs and children on "Not sure yet".

The ranking is a seaplane resort with 18 points, a speedboat resort with 9, a split stay with 2 and a local island at minus 9. The trade-offs list the quiet lagoons against daylight-only flights and the transfer cost.

For this couple, the deciding question becomes villa type and how far to fly. The honeymoon budget split planner shows how a budget divides between flights, villa, transfers and taxes.

Who the result suits, and when to look again

The quiz suits first-timers who have not yet settled on a stay style. It is less useful once you have a resort in mind; at that point compare properties directly with the resort comparison worksheet.

Muslim travellers who want a relaxed local island trip and families with older children often see a split stay rank high. That is a fair result: a few nights on a local island, then a resort, gives both price and comfort, as long as the trip has four nights or more.

If your scores are within a few points, both styles are realistic. Prices, transfer times and property rules vary by date, so confirm the details before you commit.

    What to do next

Pick the top one or two styles and price them. The four-night holiday planner shows how many island nights your leave allows, and the speedboat versus seaplane decision tool helps if the transfer is the sticking point.

    Questions travellers ask

Why does the liveaboard only appear sometimes?
A liveaboard is a niche choice, so the quiz shows it only when you pick reefs as the main reason for going and you are not travelling with children under six. Cabins are shared, days follow the dive plan, and young children are not a good fit on most boats. If diving is your priority, it can rank first.
Can I trust a result after only three answers?
Three answers give a usable first ranking, which is why the result appears from that point. Budget, alcohol and transfer usually move the ranking most. Answer all eight for a fuller picture, and treat close scores as a sign that two styles would both work.
Is a split stay more expensive than staying in one resort?
Usually it costs less than the same number of nights at a resort, because the first nights are at guesthouse prices. It adds one transfer day and a second transfer fee. Run both options through the trip cost calculator to see the difference for your dates and group.
Does the quiz know which resorts allow alcohol or require modest dress?
The quiz works at the level of stay styles, not individual properties. Alcohol is served only on resorts, liveaboards and licensed tourist facilities, and modest dress applies in public on local islands. Check each property's own rules once you have a shortlist.
