Verdict by traveller type
The right choice depends on how often you want to be in the water and what you want to see. Here is the short version before the detail.
- Couples who snorkel well: a house reef. Daily snorkelling with no booking makes a big difference over four or five nights.
- First-time snorkellers: a resort with a calm lagoon and house reef, plus one guided boat trip once you are comfortable.
- Local island budget travellers: boat trips. Most coral is offshore, so budget for two or three.
- Wildlife chasers: boat trips to the right atoll in the right season. House reefs rarely deliver whale sharks or manta gatherings.
- Families with young children: a shallow lagoon matters more than the reef; add a family-friendly boat trip.

How a house reef works in practice
You walk from the beach or step down from a villa ladder, swim across the lagoon and reach the reef edge. Resorts usually mark entry and exit points, because the gaps in the reef are where it is safe to cross.
The reef edge, where coral drops into deeper water, is where most life gathers. It is also where current flows, so check the tide with the dive centre and swim against the drift first. A reef 20 m from the beach is easy; one 200 m out across a shallow lagoon is a real swim. Our guide to visibility, currents and tides explains how to read the conditions.
How boat snorkelling works in practice
A boat takes a group to one or more sites, the guide briefs you, and you snorkel for 30 to 60 minutes per stop. The boat follows or collects you downstream.
The benefit is choice. The operator can pick a sheltered site on a windy day, or head to a channel where mantas feed.
Wildlife trips in protected areas carry extra rules. In South Ari, only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to whale sharks, and at Hanifaru Bay groups must go with a licensed guide and scuba is banned.
Our page on choosing a snorkelling excursion safely lists what to check.
What a snorkel day looks like with each option
A house reef day is loose and flexible. You might snorkel for 40 minutes after breakfast, rest by the pool, then go back in late afternoon when the light is softer, all without asking anyone.
A boat day is more structured. You meet at the jetty at a set time, spend a morning or afternoon out with two or three stops, and return in time for lunch or sunset. In between stops you sit in the sun on deck, so bring water, a hat and a light top.
Many travellers enjoy mixing the two. Use the house reef for practice and short sessions on the first days, then save the boat trip for a calm morning later in the stay, once you know your own comfort level in the water.
A simple decision rule
Count the snorkel sessions you want across your stay. If it is more than three, a resort with a good house reef usually works out better, because each boat trip is paid.
If it is one or two, and especially if you want a specific animal, a cheaper stay plus targeted boat trips gives you more for your money. Our comparison of a resort versus a Maafushi guesthouse shows how that trade-off plays out in the budget, and the trip cost calculator has a line for excursions.
When the other choice works better
A house reef is less useful if nobody in your group is comfortable swimming 100 m in open water, or if you visit in a very windy week. Boat trips are less useful if you get seasick easily; see our notes on seasickness on boat transfers.
