The short answer
A Maafushi guesthouse is the budget way to see the Maldives, with daily excursions and a local island feel. A resort is the private way, with your own beach, reef and service, at several times the price.
Neither is the "real" Maldives. This page sits under the comparisons and trade-offs hub, and the island itself is covered in our Maafushi travel guide for Malaysians.
Side by side: what changes
| Factor | Maafushi guesthouse | Resort |
|---|---|---|
| Room rate (before tax) | About USD 60 to 180 per night | About USD 300 to 550 (4-star) or 500 to 1,100 (5-star) |
| Green Tax | USD 6 per guest per night (50 rooms or fewer) | USD 12 per guest per night |
| Transfer from Male | Shared speedboat about USD 25 pp one way | Speedboat about USD 100 to 370 pp return, seaplane about USD 400 to 820 |
| Beach | Designated bikini beach shared with others | Resort beach, often around the whole island |
| Dress code | Cover shoulders and knees outside the bikini beach | Resort wear anywhere, no topless sunbathing |
| Alcohol | Not sold on the island | Available at bars and restaurants |
| Food | Cafes and local restaurants, halal by default | Resort restaurants, set board plans |
| Activities | Excursions sold on every street | Resort-run, usually pricier |

Worked example: 3 nights for two
Here is the same 3-night stay for two adults, priced both ways before meals and flights.
Maafushi guesthouse at USD 100 per night:
- Room: USD 100 × 3 = USD 300.
- Service and TGST, about 28.7%: about USD 386.
- Green Tax: USD 6 × 2 × 3 = USD 36.
- Speedboat: USD 25 × 2 people × 2 ways = USD 100.
- Total: about USD 522, or about RM2,135 at RM4.09.
4-star resort at USD 400 per night, speedboat transfer:
- Room: USD 400 × 3 = USD 1,200.
- Service and TGST, about 28.7%: about USD 1,544.
- Green Tax: USD 12 × 2 × 3 = USD 72.
- Speedboat: about USD 200 per person return, so USD 400.
- Total: about USD 2,016, or about RM8,245 at RM4.09.
The gap is about RM6,100 for two before meals. On Maafushi, excursions and meals add up quickly, while many resorts sell meal plans. Run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.
What the resort money actually buys
The biggest difference is space. On a resort, the island is yours and other guests, and the reef is often a few steps away.
On Maafushi, you share a busy island with residents, other guesthouses and day-trippers. That is part of its appeal for many travellers, but not for honeymooners after quiet.
The second difference is freedom of dress and drink. Resorts have no local dress code beyond the national ban on topless sunbathing, and alcohol is available.
What Maafushi gives you that a resort does not
Choice and value. You can book sandbank trips, snorkelling, fishing and resort day passes from guesthouses along the main streets.
You also see Maldivian daily life: the harbour, the mosque, local cafes and families out in the evening. Food is halal by default, which many Muslim travellers value.
Arrival day: how the transfer changes the plan
Maafushi works with any of the three nonstop flights from KLIA. Shared speedboats run several times a day, and the airport boat is listed at USD 25 per person one way, booked in advance.
Seaplane resorts are different. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so you need to land in Male by about 15:30 to arrive the same day.
That rules out the Batik Air evening arrival at about 21:55 for seaplane resorts. Book a speedboat resort, or spend the first night on Maafushi or in Hulhumale and move on in the morning.
Speedboat resorts near Male are the closest match to Maafushi on transfer time. Expect about USD 100 to 370 per person return for a shared resort speedboat.
A decision rule
Choose Maafushi if your budget for the whole trip is under about RM5,000 per person, you want excursions daily, and alcohol does not matter.
Choose a resort if this is a honeymoon or milestone, you want to swim from your room, or you are travelling with older parents who prefer a quiet, contained island.
Choose both if you can. A popular pattern is 2 or 3 nights on Maafushi then 1 or 2 at a resort, explained in moving from Maafushi to a resort and budgeting a split stay.
Who each suits best
Maafushi suits first-timers on a budget, friend groups, solo travellers and anyone who wants activities. A resort suits honeymooners, families with young children and older travellers.
