A Maldives resort with beach access versus a lagoon-focused resort

Two resorts can look alike in photos, yet one is built for the beach and the other for the lagoon.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

A beach-access resort has a continuous sandy shore and usually a nearby house reef, which suits families, walkers and snorkellers. A lagoon-focused resort sits in a wide, shallow lagoon with many water villas, which suits couples who want calm water and the classic overwater view, but snorkelling may need a boat trip. Check the resort map, the share of water villas and how far the reef is from the beach.

Some Maldives resorts are built around a sandy beach that rings the island. Others are built around a wide, shallow lagoon, with water villas reaching out on long jetties. Both look beautiful in photos, but daily life differs.

This page shows how to tell them apart and which suits whom. It sits under the resorts and stay choices hub, alongside how to pick a resort with a safe house reef.

What is the difference between a beach resort and a lagoon resort?

A beach resort has sand around most of the island, with the reef edge usually close to shore. You walk out of your villa onto the beach, and you can often snorkel from it.

A lagoon resort sits inside a large, shallow lagoon. The water is calm and bright turquoise, but the reef edge can be hundreds of metres away, so snorkelling may need a boat.

Many resorts are a mix. The useful question is which side your villa is on and what you will do most days.

Fit test: which type suits you?

Score one point for each line that applies. More points in a column point you to that type.

A tie usually means a mixed resort with both a good beach and a lagoon side.

How do you check a resort before booking?

  1. Open the resort map and find your villa category.
  2. Look at a satellite view to see where the reef edge sits.
  3. Ask how far the nearest house reef entry is from the beach.
  4. Ask how the lagoon looks at low tide in front of your villa.
  5. Check recent guest photos for the beach width in your travel month.

The Ministry of Tourism register confirms a resort is licensed, but it does not describe the beach. The resort's own map and fact sheet are your main tools.

Who suits each type best?

Beach resorts suit families who want sand, snorkellers who want to swim off the shore and travellers who like walking. They also suit older travellers who prefer short paths over jetties.

Lagoon resorts suit honeymooners who want the overwater picture and calm water. They suit weak swimmers who want to float in clear, shallow water near the villa.

Does the layout change the price?

Indirectly, yes. Lagoon resorts usually have more water villas, so a larger share of their rooms sit in the higher overwater band, about USD 800 to 1,800 per night before tax in the 2026 Holiday.com.mv bands.

Beach resorts often have more beach villas, which start lower. At four-star level these were about USD 300 to 550 per night before tax, and at five-star about USD 500 to 1,100.

So the cheapest way into a lagoon resort is often its beach villa, and the beach in front of it may be narrow. Check that trade-off before booking the entry category at a lagoon-focused resort.

What does a typical day look like at each?

At a beach resort, a family day might be breakfast, sand play, a snorkel from the beach before lunch and a sunset walk around the island. Little planning is needed.

At a lagoon resort, a couple's day might be breakfast on the deck, floating in the lagoon, then an afternoon boat snorkel trip to the reef. The day is calmer but more scheduled around the boat.

Neither is better. The point is to choose the layout that matches the day you picture.

What about the seasons?

From about December to April, the drier northeast monsoon brings calmer conditions on most sides of the islands. From about May to November, the southwest monsoon brings more wind and swell to exposed shores.

A sheltered lagoon can stay calm when an exposed beach turns choppy. Ask which side of the island faces the prevailing wind in your travel month.

When should you choose differently?

If your priority is reef life above all, a beach resort with a close house reef, or a liveaboard, will serve you better than a lagoon resort. If you mainly want a water villa, a lagoon resort usually gives more choice.

Families with beginners should read family snorkelling for non-swimmers and beginners. If transfer time matters more than layout, see how to choose a resort near Male airport.

Questions travellers ask

How can I tell from photos which type a resort is?
Look at an aerial photo or the resort map. A beach resort shows sand around most of the island with the reef edge close. A lagoon resort shows a wide turquoise area, often with long jetties of water villas, and the reef edge far from the island. Satellite views in map apps help too.
Do lagoon resorts have beaches?
Usually yes, but the beach can be narrower or shorter than at beach-focused resorts. Some lagoon resorts have sandbanks that change with tides and seasons. Ask how much beach sits in front of the beach villas and whether any parts erode.
Is lagoon water too shallow for swimming at low tide?
In some lagoons, low tide leaves knee-deep water for a long distance, which suits children but not swimmers. Water villa decks usually have deeper water underneath. Ask the resort how the lagoon behaves at low tide in front of your villa type.
Which type is better in the wetter months?
Both work, but a sheltered lagoon keeps the water calmer when wind picks up. A beach facing the wind can get choppier. Ask which side of the island your villa sits on, because the sheltered side changes with the monsoon.
