Costs and budgets

Can a Malaysian couple do the Maldives for under RM6,000 total?

You and your partner have about RM6,000 for everything, flights included, and want to know if the Maldives is realistic or a stretch.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Yes, but only on a local island, on a low-cost fare and outside the year-end peak. A self-built 4D3N Maafushi trip for two comes to about RM5,650 with flights, a USD 100 guesthouse room and a modest food budget. A ready-made halal package at RM2,319 per person plus flights comes to about RM6,950, so it fits only if you find a fare well below RM1,155 return.

The short answer for couples

RM6,000 for two people, flights included, works for a 4D3N local island trip. It does not stretch to a resort, a seaplane or an overwater villa.

The two things that decide it are the flight price and the dates. With return fares near RM1,155 each, flights alone take about RM2,311 of your RM6,000. That leaves about RM3,689 for everything on the ground. Our Budget and Real Cost hub shows how this compares with mid-range and luxury trips.

Three routes, costed for two

All three routes are 4D3N for a couple from KUL, at RM4.09 per USD. Flights use the cheapest return seen on Traveloka on 11 October 2026.

Route A is the only one that fits on today's evidence. Route B gives you more, including meals and four boat trips, but needs a fare sale to fit.

How route A adds up

Route A uses a local island guesthouse room at USD 100 a night, inside the USD 60 to 180 range published by holiday.com.mv.

  • Room: USD 100 x 3 nights = USD 300, plus 10% service and 17% GST = USD 386.10.
  • Green Tax: USD 6 x 2 guests x 3 nights = USD 36.
  • Shared speedboat: USD 25 per person each way (maafushi.com) = USD 100 for two, return.
  • Ground total: USD 522.10, about RM2,135.

The food and extras line is our planning assumption of RM150 per person per day for 4 days. It covers meals not included at the guesthouse and perhaps one shared excursion. Your spending may differ, so treat it as the line to adjust.

What route B gives you for the extra RM949

The HolidayGoGoGo Arena Beach package, checked 12 October 2026, is RM2,319 per person twin share for travel to 31 October 2026. It includes the speedboat, three breakfasts, two lunches, three dinners (halal), two snorkel trips, a sandbank trip, a dolphin cruise and all taxes.

That is good value for a couple who want everything arranged. But the price is valid only to 31 October 2026, and post-October rates were not yet published when we checked, so confirm the current price.

A realistic shape for the four days

Land on the AirAsia morning flight around 09:50 and take the shared speedboat to Maafushi in the early afternoon. The first evening is for the beach and a simple dinner.

Day two is your excursion day. Many guesthouses sell shared snorkel trips, so pick one and book it on the island rather than in advance. Day three stays free: bikini beach in the morning, a walk around the island, sunset from the harbour.

On day four, take the morning boat back to Male in good time for your flight. Leave at least a few hours of margin, because boats run to a schedule and weather can slow crossings.

Route C deserves a word. Media Travel lists a "Free and Easy Maafushi 4D3N" from RM1,300 per person, checked 11 October 2026, but the page does not list inclusions. It may fit RM6,000 easily, or it may exclude transfers and taxes. Ask before comparing.

What makes or breaks the RM6,000

These are the levers, in order of impact.

  1. Flight price. A fare RM300 higher per person removes the whole buffer.
  2. Dates. Over 24 and 31 December, the Arena Beach package adds RM625 and RM725 per adult in gala dinners.
  3. Room choice. A USD 150 room instead of USD 100 adds about RM526 for three nights.
  4. Arrival time. Batik Air lands about 21:55, which can mean a night near the airport before the boat.
  5. Departure city. Flying from outside KUL adds a domestic leg.

Who this budget suits, and who should spend more

RM6,000 suits couples who enjoy beaches and snorkelling, are comfortable with local island customs, and do not need alcohol or a private villa. It also suits a first look at the Maldives before a bigger anniversary trip later.

Couples set on a resort, a seaplane or a water villa should plan closer to RM10,000 to RM12,000 for two. See what RM8,000 per person buys for that tier, or a solo RM3,000 trip for the floor. To test your own fares and room rates, use the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Is RM6,000 enough for a honeymoon in the Maldives?
It is enough for a local island honeymoon, not a resort one. Local islands are dry, with no alcohol outside licensed tourist facilities, and modest dress is expected away from bikini beaches. If an overwater villa is the dream, the published honeymoon packages we checked start around RM4,799 per person before flights.
Can we add a resort day visit within RM6,000?
Possibly, if the self-built route comes in under budget. Many resorts near Male sell day visits, but prices vary and we have no dated published figure to give you. Ask your guesthouse or agency for a current price before counting on it.
Does the RM6,000 include travel insurance?
Our worked examples do not include insurance. Add your own quote, which for two people on a short trip is usually a small part of the total. Buy it soon after paying for flights so the cancellation cover starts early.
What if we fly from Penang or Kota Kinabalu?
Nonstop flights to Male leave from Kuala Lumpur, so you would add a domestic connection to KUL. That extra fare can push a tight RM6,000 budget over. Price the full journey before committing.
