Can you dive at Hanifaru Bay? Current restrictions explained

You are a diver planning a Baa Atoll trip and want to know whether you can scuba with the mantas at Hanifaru Bay, or whether you need a different plan.

Last reviewed 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

No. Scuba diving has been banned inside Hanifaru Bay since the bay was given strict protection, and visits are snorkel only with a licensed Hanifaru guide. Divers usually snorkel the bay and dive other Baa Atoll sites with their dive centre. Rules on visitor numbers, fees and session times change, so confirm them with your resort or dive centre close to your dates.

The direct answer: no scuba inside the bay

Scuba diving is banned inside Hanifaru Bay. The bay is snorkel only, and every group must be accompanied by a licensed Hanifaru guide.

Many dive sites still list Hanifaru, which confuses divers. It is listed because of its fame, not because you can dive it. For how a snorkel visit works, see manta ray watching at Hanifaru Bay. The snorkelling hub and our Maldives scuba diving guide cover the wider picture.

What is allowed and what is not

The last row comes from operator and conservation reports, not an official text we could reach, so treat it as something to confirm.

How to verify the current rules

Rules at Hanifaru have changed over the years, and published figures for boat caps, swimmer caps and fees disagree. Check these points close to your travel date.

  1. Ask your resort or dive centre in writing what the current rules are for the bay, including session length and caps.
  2. Ask whether the visitor token or fee is included in the trip price, and how much it is.
  3. Ask who the licensed guide is and how the resort books its slot.
  4. Check the official protected-areas site of the Maldives Environmental Protection Agency for Baa Atoll notices.
  5. Ask about manta alerts, since resorts may send guests at short notice.

If a seller offers scuba inside the bay, treat that as a reason to choose another operator.

Why older guides still mention diving there

Hanifaru became famous among divers before its strict protection, and some older trip reports, forums and dive site lists still describe dives in the bay. Those accounts are out of date.

When you research, check the date of anything you read. A page that describes scuba inside the bay, or quotes a fee or cap without a date, is a reason to double-check with your resort rather than plan around it.

The same caution applies to visitor numbers and token prices. Sources disagree, which is why this page gives none. Your resort or dive centre will know the current arrangement for the season you travel.

Where Hanifaru fits in a dive trip

Treat the bay as a surface activity that slots between dives. A snorkel session is short, and resorts may send guests at short notice when mantas are spotted.

That flexibility matters if you are on a dive package. Ask your dive centre whether a manta alert can replace a scheduled dive, and whether unused dives can move to another day. Plan your surface intervals so a sudden trip to the bay does not clash with a deep dive.

A diver's plan for Baa Atoll

Most divers combine a Hanifaru snorkel with dives elsewhere in Baa. That keeps the bay protected and still gives you time underwater.

  • Snorkel Hanifaru during the season, roughly June to November, with the busiest period late June to October.
  • Dive other Baa sites with your resort's dive centre. Ask which sites have had mantas recently.
  • Keep a no-fly gap before your flight home or a seaplane transfer, as your dive centre advises.
  • Carry dive insurance that covers evacuation. ADK Hospital in Male has a hyperbaric unit, opened in January 2023.

Who this suits, and when to choose differently

The snorkel-plus-dive plan suits certified divers and mixed couples where one dives and one snorkels. Non-divers lose nothing at Hanifaru, because everyone snorkels.

If your heart is set on scuba with large animals in a single trip, a liveaboard or a South Ari base for whale sharks may suit you better than a Baa stay. Both are covered in our diving and liveaboards hub.

Questions travellers ask

Why was diving banned at Hanifaru Bay?
The bay is small and shallow, and manta rays feed in it in large numbers during the season. Divers' bubbles, bodies and lights in such a confined space can disturb feeding. Protection rules made the bay snorkel only to reduce that impact, and visits are supervised by licensed guides and rangers.
Can I free dive in Hanifaru Bay?
Operators report that duck diving and free diving below the surface are not allowed in the bay. Plan to stay at the surface. Your guide's briefing is the final word on the day, so ask when you book if free diving matters to you.
Do Baa Atoll dive centres take divers to see mantas elsewhere?
Many do. Dive centres in Baa run trips to reef sites and cleaning stations outside the bay, where mantas may be seen in season. Which sites, and how often mantas appear, varies, so ask the dive centre for its current site list and recent sightings rather than relying on old trip reports.
Is my dive insurance affected by snorkelling at Hanifaru?
Snorkelling is not usually treated as diving, but check your policy wording. Divers in the Maldives should carry insurance that covers diving and evacuation, because only a few facilities have hyperbaric chambers, including ADK Hospital in Male. Our diving insurance page lists questions to ask.
