Manta rays versus whale sharks: which Maldives trip suits you?

You have one Maldives holiday and want one big animal encounter, but you are not sure whether to plan around mantas or whale sharks.

Last reviewed 11 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Plan around whale sharks if you travel outside June to November or want the widest choice of bases, because South Ari has sightings year-round with the most from August to November. Plan around mantas if you can travel roughly late June to October and want a guided snorkel at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll. Neither sighting is guaranteed, so pick the trip whose base you would enjoy even on a blank day.

Key facts

  • Hanifaru mantas

The short verdict by traveller type

Your travel month decides most of this. Whale sharks are possible all year in South Ari; Hanifaru mantas are a seasonal event in Baa Atoll.

  • School holiday trip in December or March: whale sharks in South Ari.
  • Honeymoon in August or September: either works, so choose by resort style and transfer.
  • Snorkel-only couple who want a short, structured encounter: Hanifaru mantas in season.
  • Divers: see South Ari versus Baa Atoll diving, because scuba is banned inside Hanifaru Bay.

What a day looks like for each

A Hanifaru visit is short and often unplanned. Your resort or guide watches conditions and sends guests when mantas gather, so you may get only a little notice.

A whale shark trip is a half or full day on a boat. The crew looks for a shark near the surface, then guests slip in quietly with a guide. Some trips also visit a reef or sandbank, which softens a blank day.

Read whale shark watching in South Ari, realistic expectations and manta ray watching at Hanifaru Bay for the detail of each.

What each choice means for transfers and budget

The animal you choose often decides the transfer, and the transfer can be a large part of the bill. Baa resorts are usually reached by seaplane or by a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo plus a boat, while South Ari also has speedboat options to some local islands.

As a rough guide, one transfer guide puts a shared resort seaplane at about USD 400 to 820 per adult return, and a domestic flight plus speedboat at about USD 350 to 520 (immaldives.com, checked 11 Oct 2026). At RM4.09 per USD, USD 400 is about RM1,636 and USD 820 is about RM3,354 per adult.

For a couple, that difference alone can be several thousand ringgit. Ask for the transfer price per adult, return, before comparing resorts on room rate.

A budget traveller can reach whale shark country more cheaply by staying on a South Ari local island. A Hanifaru trip from a local island is possible too, but check the guide arrangement first. Run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.

Seaplanes only fly in daylight. If you arrive on the evening Batik Air flight, plan a night near the airport before any seaplane transfer.

Can you do both in one trip?

You can, but it usually means two bases and a second transfer, so it suits trips of six nights or more. South Ari and Baa sit on different sides of Male, and transfers between atolls add cost and time.

Our page on combining whale shark and manta excursions works through the logistics. For four or five nights, pick one.

Decision rule if you are still unsure

Ask one question: which base would you enjoy most if you saw nothing at all?

If you like a lively local island with budget guesthouses and boat trips, South Ari local islands are strong. If you want a quiet resort with a house reef and a seaplane arrival, Baa suits you. Choose the holiday first, then let the animal be the bonus.

Who this suits, and when to choose differently

This choice matters most for snorkellers who want one memorable encounter. Families with young children, anxious swimmers or older travellers may be happier with a calm house reef and occasional turtles.

If guaranteed animal time is your main goal, no wild-animal trip in the Maldives can promise it. Build in a spare day and judge any operator on how they behave, not on what they promise.

Questions travellers ask

Can a local island guesthouse stay include whale sharks?
Yes. Guesthouses on inhabited islands in and near South Ari, such as Dhigurah, commonly sell whale shark trips through local operators. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to whale sharks in the marine protected area, so ask the guesthouse which operator runs the trip and whether the guide holds that certification.
Which is better for children?
It depends on the child's swimming and comfort in open water. Both encounters happen in deep water from a boat, and conditions can be choppy. Hanifaru is a short snorkel in a small bay; whale shark trips can involve longer boat time searching. Ask about life jackets, child sizes and whether a parent can stay on the boat with a younger sibling.
Is the southwest monsoon a problem for these trips?
The manta season at Hanifaru falls in the wetter southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, because the plankton that draws mantas is linked to those conditions. Expect some rain and some days with rougher seas. Build at least one spare day into your plan in case a trip is cancelled for weather.
Are manta rays dangerous to snorkel with?
Mantas have no stinging barb and feed on plankton. The risks come from the setting, such as boat traffic, currents and crowding, not the animal. Keep your distance, do not touch, avoid flash and follow the guide's briefing.
