South Ari diving versus Baa Atoll diving

You are a certified diver choosing between South Ari and Baa Atoll and want the trade-offs laid out plainly.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

South Ari suits divers who want year-round whale shark chances, pinnacles and more current, with good options for budget local-island stays. Baa suits divers who want gentler diving and the manta season, roughly June to November, but remember Hanifaru Bay itself is snorkel only. Neither atoll guarantees big animals, so choose on season and your experience level.

The verdict by diver type

Season and experience decide this more than reputation. Use this list first, then check the table.

  • Travelling December to May: South Ari, because the Hanifaru manta season has ended.
  • Travelling June to November and keen on mantas: Baa.
  • Newer Open Water divers: Baa often has gentler sites; South Ari works if you ask for sheltered reefs.
  • Experienced divers who like current and pinnacles: South Ari.
  • Budget divers on local islands: South Ari has well-known guesthouse islands such as Dhigurah.

Transfers: what moves the budget

The transfer can matter as much as the atoll. One transfer guide gives a shared resort seaplane at about USD 400 to 820 per adult return, and a domestic flight plus speedboat at about USD 350 to 520 (immaldives.com, checked 11 Oct 2026).

At RM4.09 per USD, that is roughly RM1,432 to RM3,354 per adult. A South Ari local island reached by speedboat can cost much less, so ask for the exact transfer price per adult, return, before comparing.

Matching the atoll to your experience

Both atolls have easy and demanding sites. The question is which one gives you more choice at your level.

  1. Fewer than 20 logged dives: ask for sheltered reefs and stay within your training depth. Baa often fits.
  2. Comfortable with buoyancy, some drift experience: either atoll works.
  3. Advanced, happy in current: South Ari's pinnacles and outer reefs reward you.

Whatever your level, the reported national limit for recreational diving is 30 metres. See advanced diving, currents and experience for more.

What a week looks like in each atoll

In South Ari, a typical dive week mixes reef and pinnacle dives with one or two boat trips searching for whale sharks along the outer reef. Whale shark encounters usually happen near the surface, so non-diving partners can join those trips as snorkellers.

In Baa during the manta season, dive centres plan manta dives at cleaning stations and keep an eye on Hanifaru for snorkel trips when mantas gather. Outside the season, Baa is a quieter reef destination with fewer big-animal highlights.

The southwest monsoon covers the Baa manta season, so expect some rain and some rough days. Build at least one spare day into a dive week so a cancelled boat does not cost you the trip's main encounter.

In both atolls, choose the operator before the resort where you can. A dive centre that explains its sites, current policy and guide ratio clearly is worth more than a famous site name.

Families with a diving parent and snorkelling children often lean towards South Ari, because whale shark trips work for both. Couples chasing mantas in August or September often lean towards Baa, where a resort can alert guests when Hanifaru is active.

Combining both atolls

You can split a trip between them, but it means two transfers and usually six nights or more. Plan your last dive at least 18 hours before any flight, including the seaplane between atolls, if you have dived over several days.

For the snorkelling side of the same choice, read manta rays versus whale sharks.

Who this suits, and when to choose differently

This comparison suits certified divers choosing one atoll for a dive-focused trip. Honeymooners where only one partner dives should weigh resort style and house reef too.

If you want the most sites in one trip, a liveaboard dive safari can cover Ari and sometimes Baa. For the closer alternative, compare North Male and South Male atoll diving.

Questions travellers ask

Can I dive with mantas in Baa if Hanifaru is snorkel only?
Yes, at other Baa sites. Mantas visit cleaning stations elsewhere in the atoll, and dive centres plan manta dives there in season. Hanifaru Bay itself is reserved for guided snorkelling. Ask your dive centre which manta sites it uses and how it limits crowding.
Do I need special permission to dive with whale sharks in South Ari?
Encounters inside the South Ari Marine Protected Area must be led by SAMPA-certified guides, so book with an operator that uses them. Keep at least 3 metres from the shark's head and body and never touch it. Most encounters happen near the surface, so snorkellers in your group can join too.
Which is easier to reach from KLIA?
Both are reached from Velana airport after landing. South Ari has seaplane, domestic flight and speedboat options, depending on the island. Baa resorts usually use a seaplane or a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo plus a boat. Either way, land by about 15:30 if you need a seaplane the same day.
Which is better for underwater photography?
Both work. South Ari's pinnacles suit wide-angle photographers who are happy in current, while Baa's calmer reefs suit macro and beginner photographers. Flash is not allowed at Hanifaru Bay, and many operators ask for no flash near whale sharks too.
