Hanimaadhoo guesthouses and accommodation: how to choose

You have found a handful of Hanimaadhoo places to stay and want a clear way to pick one.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Hanimaadhoo has about ten listed places to stay. Choose The Barefoot Eco Hotel if you want a pool, a private beach and an on-site dive centre; choose a small guesthouse such as Himeyn Beach Inn (five rooms, from about USD 80 a night in low season) for a personal stay at a lower price. Shortlist on beach distance, meals, airport pickup and family rooms.

Good for

  • remote travel
  • quiet beach stays
  • divers exploring Haa Dhaalu

Worth knowing

  • Swimwear only on the designated bikini beach or a hotel's private beach area
  • Few restaurants outside guesthouses; ask about meal plans
  • Bank of Maldives opened a rufiyaa ATM on the island in August 2025 and a USD ATM and counter at the airport on 9 November 2025; still carry some US dollars

Getting there from Male airport

  • domestic flight: about 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutesOne aggregator snapshot showed about EUR 193 (about USD 219) one way for a December 2026 date; fares change daily, so check Maldivian when you book

Choosing on Hanimaadhoo is easier than on Maafushi, because there are only about ten places. The real choice is between one larger eco hotel and a set of small family-run guesthouses.

The Hanimaadhoo island guide explains the island. For local island stays in general, see the beginner guide to local islands.

The Barefoot Eco Hotel or a small guesthouse?

Pick Barefoot for facilities, and a guesthouse for price and a personal feel.

The Barefoot Eco Hotel. Rooms are about 50 square metres with a terrace, and the hotel has heritage villas built from coral and reclaimed wood. Sources report 52 or 64 rooms, so confirm the room type you are booking. Its private beach allows swimwear.

Small guesthouses. Himeyn Beach Inn published rooms from about USD 80 (Standard, May to October) to USD 150 (Family, November to April) per night in March 2026. Five rooms means quiet stays, but fewer facilities and less flexibility if plans change.

How to shortlist

Score each property on these points before you pay a deposit:

  • Walking time to the bikini beach or private beach.
  • Airport pickup: car or boat, and is it included.
  • Meals: breakfast only, half board or full board.
  • Family rooms, extra beds and cots.
  • Diving: on-site centre or partner operator.
  • Payment: card, cash or transfer, and any fee.
  • Total price per night with service charge, 17% GST and Green Tax shown.

Questions to ask before you pay

Send these in one message and compare the replies:

  1. Is the rate per room or per person, and does it include 10% service and 17% GST?
  2. Which Green Tax applies, USD 6 or USD 12 per guest per night?
  3. Will you book the domestic flight and meet us at Hanimaadhoo?
  4. Can you prepare halal meals, and can we eat at set times during Ramadan?
  5. What is the cancellation policy if the domestic flight changes?

The Green Tax explainer shows how the tax is charged.

Which property suits whom?

Honeymooners and older travellers who want a pool and more service lean towards Barefoot. Budget couples, friends and families watching costs lean towards a small guesthouse with a family room.

Divers should pick based on the dive operator first, then the room. For a full budget, see what a holiday on Hanimaadhoo costs.

Location on the island: what matters

Hanimaadhoo is larger than most guesthouse islands, so location matters more than on Maafushi. A room near the airport is handy on arrival day but can be a longer ride from the bikini beach.

Ask each property for the walking or cycling time to the beach you will actually use. If you have young children or older parents, a short, shaded walk is worth paying a little more for.

Also ask about noise. Rooms near the runway may hear flights, and rooms near the mosque hear the call to prayer five times a day, which many Malaysian guests find familiar rather than disruptive.

Meals and food for Malaysian guests

Outside restaurants are few, so the meal plan matters. Guesthouse kitchens cook Maldivian dishes such as fish curry, rice, roshi and short eats, and some will adjust spice levels on request.

If you prefer familiar food, ask whether the kitchen can cook fried rice or noodles. Pack sambal or instant noodles if your family needs a taste of home, as island shops stock only basics.

When to book

Book early for December to April and Malaysian school holidays, since a five-room guesthouse fills fast. In the May to October low season, published guesthouse rates are lower and you have more choice.

Once your room is confirmed, check the Hanimaadhoo transfer guide so the flight matches your check-in.

Questions travellers ask

How do I check that a guesthouse is registered?
The Ministry of Tourism publishes a registered facilities list, which immigration relies on when it asks for a confirmed booking at a registered property. The site blocked our check in October 2026. Ask the guesthouse for its tourism registration number and keep the confirmation email for arrival.
Which is better for a family of four?
A family room in a small guesthouse is often cheaper than two hotel rooms. Himeyn Beach Inn lists a family room from about USD 120 in low season. Ask about extra beds, cot availability, the pool depth and how far the beach is from the room before you choose.
Can I pay by card?
Larger hotels usually accept cards, but small guesthouses may prefer cash or bank transfer, according to Resortlife. Ask how the balance is paid and whether a card fee applies. Bring US dollars in small notes, and use the BML ATM on the island or the USD ATM at the airport as backup.
Is Barefoot a resort?
No. The Barefoot Eco Hotel is a hotel on an inhabited local island, not a private resort island. Local island customs apply outside its grounds, and alcohol is not served on the island itself. Ask the hotel what it offers in the evenings and what its beach rules are.
