Maafushi island guide for Malaysians: who it suits and how a stay works

You want a first Maldives trip on a local-island budget and Maafushi keeps coming up in every package.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Maafushi is an inhabited local island in South Male (Kaafu) Atoll, about 30 to 35 minutes from Velana airport by shared speedboat at USD 25 per person each way. It has the biggest guesthouse scene in the Maldives, a designated bikini beach and excursions sold on every street. It suits first-timers on a 3 or 4 night budget trip; travellers who want quiet or a long empty beach usually prefer a smaller island.

Maafushi is the easiest local island to reach from Velana airport and the one with the most guesthouses, cafes and tour desks. That makes it a practical first Maldives trip for Malaysians on a budget, with the trade-off that it is busy and built-up.

This page covers what the island is like and who it suits. For the wider picture of staying on inhabited islands, start with our beginner guide to Maldives local islands.

What kind of island is Maafushi?

Maafushi is an inhabited local island in South Male Atoll, part of Kaafu Atoll, roughly 25 km from Male. About 4,471 people lived there in 2022, including foreign workers, according to census figures cited by Wikipedia.

It is a working Maldivian town first and a tourist island second. You will see schools, a harbour, a mosque, building sites and families going about their day, with guesthouses packed into the streets between them.

Guesthouse tourism grew fast after local islands opened to it. Published counts vary by source and year (from about 35 to over 70 properties), so treat any single number with care and assume there is plenty of choice.

Who Maafushi suits, and who should look elsewhere

The island works best for travellers who value price, convenience and choice over seclusion.

If you have five nights or more and want whale sharks or a long empty beach, compare it with Dhigurah in our Maafushi versus Dhigurah comparison.

Island customs and the bikini beach

Maafushi is a Muslim community, and local rules apply outside the tourist beach. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, in shops and in restaurants.

Swimwear, including bikinis, is fine on the designated bikini beach, a marked stretch of sand used by guesthouse guests. It can get crowded in high season, so an early morning swim is calmer.

Alcohol and pork cannot be brought into the Maldives and are not served on the island. Our page on what a bikini beach is explains the rules in more detail.

How a stay on Maafushi works

Most visitors land at Velana on a morning flight from KUL, take the shared speedboat and are on the island before lunch. The late Batik Air arrival (about 21:55) depends on a late boat or a private charter, so check that before you book the flight.

Guesthouses usually include breakfast, and many sell half board or full board. Days are built around half-day boat trips: snorkelling, a sandbank, dolphin watching or a resort day pass.

Evenings are quiet by city standards: cafe dinners, a walk along the beach and early nights before morning trips. For ideas, see what to do on Maafushi.

Getting there in brief

The shared airport speedboat is listed at USD 25 per person each way, takes about 30 to 35 minutes and must be booked in advance (Maafushi.com, checked 12 Oct 2026). The public ferry from Male is cheaper but takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours and does not run on Fridays.

Times, Friday planning and late-arrival options are on our page on how to get to Maafushi from Male airport.

Money, taxes and what to budget

Guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer charge a Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, and room rates usually exclude the 10% service charge and 17% Tourism GST. Ask whether a quote is nett (all taxes included) before you compare.

Malaysian agencies advertise 4D3N Maafushi land packages from about RM 2,000 per person, excluding flights (12Fly listing, checked 11 Oct 2026). Our Maafushi cost breakdown shows the arithmetic for a do-it-yourself trip.

Practical points before you go

  • Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking.
  • IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
  • Cash: carry US dollars in small notes, and confirm card acceptance and ATM access with your guesthouse.
  • Medical: there is no hyperbaric chamber on Maafushi; the nearest confirmed one is at ADK Hospital in Male.
  • Prayer: the island has a mosque, so ask your guesthouse about prayer times and a prayer mat.

When a different choice works better

Choose a resort, or split the trip, if this is a honeymoon where privacy and a quiet beach matter most. Choose Dhigurah or another smaller island if you want space and a slower pace.

Choose Maafushi when your trip is short, your budget is firm and you want excursions to be easy to arrange on the day.

Questions travellers ask

Is Maafushi too crowded?
It is the busiest guesthouse island, with about 4,500 residents in 2022 plus visitors, building work and a lot of boat traffic. The bikini beach can fill up in peak months. If calm matters more than choice, look at Dhigurah or another smaller island, or split your stay with a quieter island or a resort.
Can I drink alcohol on Maafushi?
Not on the island itself. Alcohol is only served at resorts, liveaboards and licensed tourist facilities. Some excursions from Maafushi visit nearby resorts on day passes, but check exactly what is included before you pay. Many Malaysian Muslim travellers see the dry island as a plus.
Do I need cash on Maafushi?
Bring US dollars in small notes for tips, small shops and some excursion operators. Many guesthouses accept cards, but do not assume it. We could not confirm an ATM on the island from a reliable current source, so ask your guesthouse before you rely on one.
Is Maafushi suitable for grandparents?
The island is flat and small, and transfers are short, which helps older travellers. Steps onto boats and sandy lanes are the main hurdles. Ask for a ground-floor room, and confirm the guesthouse can arrange help with luggage at the jetty.
