Hijab-friendly snorkelling and water sports in the Maldives

You wear a hijab and want to snorkel with turtles and try water sports without compromising comfort or safety.

Quick answer

Almost every Maldives water activity works in a hijab. Snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and boat trips need only a swim hijab and a mask that seals properly, while scuba diving needs a hood or a snug swim hijab under a full wetsuit. The key is mask fit: tuck all fabric away from the mask edge, and test the seal in shallow water before you head to the reef.

Key facts

  • Mask rule

    No fabric under the seal

Tuck the hijab behind the skirt of the mask

  • Snug fabric

    Lycra or polyester swim hijab

    Cotton holds water and drags

  • Whale shark trips

    South Ari Marine Protected Area

Only certified guides may take tourists

Can you snorkel and do water sports in a hijab?

Yes, comfortably. Snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding, glass-bottom kayaks and sandbank trips all work in a swim hijab and modest swimwear, and you will see other hijabi travellers doing the same at many resorts.

The two things to plan are a mask that seals and fabric that does not drag. This page covers those, plus how scuba differs. For what to wear around the resort, see modest swimwear and resort etiquette, and for the bigger picture visit the Muslim-friendly and culture hub.

How do you stop a hijab breaking the mask seal?

Fabric under the mask edge lets water in. Before you put the mask on, pull the hijab back so your hairline and temples are bare where the silicone skirt sits.

Then place the mask strap over the hijab, not under it, so it holds the fabric in place. Test in waist-deep water: breathe in gently through your nose with the mask on, and it should stay sucked to your face.

A mask-fit checklist

  • Swim hijab, not cotton: lycra or polyester fits snugly and dries fast.
  • Fabric clear of the seal: no folds under the silicone on the forehead or temples.
  • Strap over the hijab: keeps everything in place when you kick.
  • Fog-free: use anti-fog or a little baby shampoo; you will not want to lift the mask mid-reef.
  • Test in the shallows: sixty seconds of floating face-down before swimming out.
  • Spare mask size: ask the dive centre for a second option if the first leaks.

What about scuba diving?

Scuba works well with planning. A full-length wetsuit covers arms and legs, and you can wear a neoprene hood or a snug swim hijab underneath or over it.

Tell the dive centre when you book. They can set aside the right wetsuit size, a hood if you want one, and allow time for a mask check. Some divers prefer a hood because it holds hair and fabric firmly under pressure.

If you would like a female instructor or a women-only group, ask early. Availability varies by resort and roster.

Swimming confidence and children

Many Malaysian travellers are confident in pools but new to open water. A modest outfit adds a little drag, so practise in the lagoon before a boat snorkel.

Children in swim hijabs should wear a snorkel vest on every boat trip. The page on family snorkelling for non-swimmers and beginners covers choosing a calm house reef, and the beginner snorkelling guide explains reef etiquette.

Privacy on the water

If you would prefer fewer people around, book a private snorkel boat or an early morning session. House reefs are usually quiet just after sunrise, and the light is good for photos.

Private boat trips cost more than shared excursions, so ask for both prices when you compare resorts. A villa with direct lagoon access also gives you a quiet place to practise.

Who this suits, and when to plan differently

This page suits hijabi women and girls who want an active holiday, from first-time snorkellers to certified divers. Every core Maldives water activity is open to you with the right gear.

If you are uneasy in open water, start with a lagoon kayak and a guided house reef session before booking a long boat trip. Couples can read about water villas for Muslim couples for private lagoon access.

Questions travellers ask

Will a life jacket fit over a burkini and hijab?
Yes. Life jackets and snorkel vests fit over swimwear and swim hijabs without trouble. Ask the dive centre for a vest that fastens at the front, which is easier to adjust over a loose top. Children and non-swimmers should wear one on every snorkel from a boat.
Can I do a try-dive in a hijab?
Usually, yes. Resort dive centres run introductory dives in shallow lagoons, and you can wear a swim hijab under a full wetsuit or a neoprene hood. Tell the instructor in advance so they bring the right mask size and allow time for a seal check before you descend.
Are female dive instructors available?
Some resort dive centres have female instructors on the team, but rosters change. If it matters, ask the dive centre directly when you book the resort, and again a few days before your dive. Mention whether you would also prefer a female-only group.
Does a wet hijab cause problems on the boat?
Only for comfort. Swim hijabs dry quickly in the sun and wind. Pack a dry hijab and cover-up in a dry bag for village stops or lunch afterwards, especially on excursions that visit a local island.
