Modest swimwear in the Maldives and practical resort etiquette

You want to swim and relax in clothes you are comfortable in, and know where each outfit fits.

Last reviewed 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Modest swimwear such as burkinis, swim leggings and long rash guards is suitable everywhere in the Maldives, from resort pools to local island bikini beaches. The real dress rules are elsewhere: local islands expect shoulders and knees covered in public, and resort restaurants often ban wet swimwear at dinner. Pack quick-dry modest swimwear plus a light cover-up, and ask your resort about any pool fabric rules.

What modest swimwear can you wear in the Maldives?

Any of it. Burkinis, swim leggings with tunics, long-sleeve rash guards and swim hijabs are suitable at resort pools, resort beaches, on boats and at local island bikini beaches.

Modesty is never the problem in the Maldives. The rules you need to know cover the opposite case: too little clothing on local islands, and wet swimwear in resort restaurants. This page is part of the Muslim-friendly and culture hub, and the Muslim-friendly travel guide gives the wider picture.

The local island rules come from Visit Maldives and widely reported local practice. Resort rules vary, so treat the restaurant rows as typical, not universal.

Does a resort pool accept burkinis?

Most do, and a burkini is made from the same swim fabric as any other costume. A few pools anywhere in the world set rules on cotton clothing or loose garments for hygiene, so ask if you plan to swim in a cotton tunic or T-shirt.

Some resorts that market to Muslim guests go further and mention modest swimwear zones or secluded pools. If you would like a women-only swim time or a private pool, a villa with its own pool is the dependable route. The page on Muslim couples in water villas covers private pools.

What are the dress rules on a local island?

Cover your shoulders and knees in public areas, including streets, shops, cafes and harbours. Swimwear is for the designated bikini beach only.

For Malaysian Muslim women, everyday clothes such as a baju kurung, long skirt or loose trousers with a tunic are exactly right. Men should wear a T-shirt and knee-length shorts or trousers.

On a resort day trip to a local island, bring a cover-up even if you plan only a short walk. Arriving in beachwear is the most common etiquette slip.

Practical resort etiquette beyond swimwear

A few habits make a resort stay smoother for everyone.

  • Dinner dress: change into dry clothes. A loose abaya, maxi dress or kurta works well for smart casual codes.
  • Shared spaces: keep wet towels and robes off restaurant seats; most resorts provide a beach towel station.
  • Photos: ask before photographing staff or other guests. Resort staff are usually happy to help, but asking first is courteous.
  • Spa: ask for a female therapist when you book. Many resort spas can arrange this, but not all, so ask in advance.
  • Prayer: pray in your villa or an agreed space, as set out in finding prayer space at a resort.

A modest-swimwear packing list

Equatorial sun is strong all year, and modest swimwear doubles as sun protection.

  • Two sets of quick-dry swimwear: one dries while you wear the other in humid air.
  • Swim hijab or sports hijab: cotton hijabs stay heavy when wet; a polyester or lycra swim hijab dries fast.
  • Light cover-up or kaftan: for walking to restaurants and boat jetties.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: for hands, feet and face, the parts modest swimwear leaves out.
  • Rash guard for children: reduces sunburn on long snorkelling sessions.
  • Dry bag: for a change of clothes on excursions with village stops.

For snorkelling and water sports in a hijab, see hijab-friendly snorkelling, which covers mask fit and life jackets.

Who this suits, and when to plan differently

This guidance suits Muslim women, conservative families and anyone who prefers more coverage. Resorts and local islands both accommodate modest dress easily.

If you would rather swim where no one else is around, a private pool villa or a quiet sandbank trip is the better plan. If you want to swim freely on a budget, choose a local island with a good bikini beach and a lagoon away from the harbour.

Questions travellers ask

Will I be the only person in a burkini at a resort?
Probably not. The Maldives draws many visitors from the Gulf, Malaysia and Indonesia, and modest swimwear is a familiar sight at resorts and on excursions. Some resorts that market to Muslim guests specifically mention modest swimwear in their facilities. Wear what makes you comfortable.
Can men wear board shorts on a local island?
On the beach and in the water at a bikini beach, yes. Walking through the village, men are expected to wear a T-shirt and shorts that reach the knee. Shirtless walking in residential streets draws comment on inhabited islands.
Do resorts have a dress code for dinner?
Many do, especially at speciality restaurants. Typical rules ask for dry clothes, no swimwear and sometimes closed shoes or long trousers for men. A loose abaya, maxi dress or baju kurung fits these codes easily. Check each restaurant's dress code before you pack.
What should I wear on the seaplane or speedboat?
Light, modest clothes you do not mind getting splashed. Speedboats can spray water, and seaplane docks are open to the sun. A wide-brim hat and a scarf that stays put in the wind help. Keep your swimwear in your hand luggage if you want to swim on arrival.
