How far is the Maldives from Malaysia?

You want to know how long the journey really takes, from your front door to your island.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

The Maldives is about 3,100 km west of Kuala Lumpur, and nonstop KLIA to Male flights take about 4 hours 15 to 4 hours 25. The Maldives is 3 hours behind Malaysia, so a morning departure lands before noon local time. Door to door, allow roughly 7 to 10 hours from the Klang Valley to a resort, and more from East Malaysia or the north, since those trips connect through KLIA.

The Maldives is closer than many Malaysians expect. It lies about 3,100 km west of Kuala Lumpur, a nonstop flight of about 4 hours 15 to 4 hours 25 from KLIA.

What decides your real travel day is the arrival time and the transfer to your island. This page builds the door-to-door picture. For the wider first-trip plan, see the Start Here hub.

How far is the Maldives from Kuala Lumpur in kilometres?

About 3,100 km in a straight line. Route sites give figures between roughly 3,110 and 3,150 km for KUL to MLE.

The flight heads west across the Bay of Bengal and passes south of Sri Lanka. You land at Velana International Airport on Hulhule island, next to the capital Male.

Which airlines fly nonstop, and when do they land?

Three airlines fly KUL to MLE nonstop: AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air. AirAsia and Batik each run about one daily flight, and Malaysia Airlines one to two.

A sample October 2026 schedule showed AirAsia leaving about 08:35 and landing about 09:50 Maldives time, Malaysia Airlines 10:10 to 11:25, and Batik Air 20:40 to 21:55. Schedules change, so confirm times when you book.

The Maldives is 3 hours behind Malaysia (UTC+5 against UTC+8). That is why the flight looks like 1 hour 15 minutes on booking sites.

This worked example follows a couple taking the AirAsia morning flight to a seaplane resort. Times are Malaysian until landing, then Maldives time.

A speedboat resort near Male shortens the last two steps. Many guests reach the island within about two hours of landing.

What about Batik Air's evening arrival?

Batik Air lands at about 21:55, after dark. Seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset, so a seaplane resort is not possible that night.

Two plans work. Choose a speedboat island near Male that accepts late arrivals, after confirming with the property, or sleep in Hulhumale and transfer the next morning.

The evening flight suits travellers who want a full working day before leaving. It costs part of a holiday night, so factor that into how many nights you need.

How far is it from Penang, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak?

Further in time, because no nonstop flights from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching were found. Travellers connect through KLIA.

From Penang or Johor Bahru, a connection adds roughly one to two hours plus the domestic flight. From Kota Kinabalu or Kuching, the domestic leg itself is about two and a half hours, so a same-day seaplane is hard to reach on the morning KLIA departures.

Many East Malaysian travellers fly to KL the evening before, or take the Batik Air evening flight and spend the first night near Male. Our Penang connection guide and KLIA flight planning guide go into detail.

How the return journey works

Going home, you lose the 3 hours you gained. An afternoon departure from Male lands in KL in the evening.

Trans Maldivian handles departing seaplane guests whose international flight leaves after 09:00. A very early flight home may mean a last night near the airport.

What happens between landing and reaching your island?

After landing at Velana you clear immigration, collect bags and look for your resort or transfer desk. Visit Maldives notes that resort representatives often meet guests and escort them to the speedboat or seaplane.

Seaplane guests then wait at the seaplane terminal, since flights often group guests going to nearby resorts. Speedboat guests usually leave sooner, though shared boats run to a schedule.

Have your IMUGA declaration filed before you fly, since it can only be submitted within 96 hours of arrival. That keeps the airport step short.

Who this distance suits

The short flight suits travellers with limited leave, families with young children and older travellers who prefer to avoid long-haul flights. A three- or four-night trip is realistic from KLIA.

Travellers from East Malaysia face a longer journey and usually benefit from an extra night. To see what the flight adds to your total budget, use the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Why does the flight look like 1 hour 15 minutes on booking sites?
Booking sites show departure in Malaysian time and arrival in Maldives time. Because the Maldives is 3 hours behind, a flight leaving at 08:35 and landing at 09:50 is really about 4 hours 15 minutes in the air. On the way home you lose those 3 hours.
Are there direct flights from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching?
None were found in October 2026. Travellers from those cities connect through KLIA. Leave a comfortable connection, and consider separate tickets only if you accept the risk of a missed onward flight, since the second airline will not wait for a delayed first flight.
Is the Maldives closer than Europe or Japan from Malaysia?
Yes, it is a medium-haul trip. At about four and a quarter hours, it sits closer to a flight to northern Asia than a long-haul flight to Europe. That makes three- and four-night trips realistic for Malaysians with limited leave.
Will I have jet lag?
A 3-hour difference causes little jet lag for most people. You may wake early on the first morning, which suits sunrise snorkelling. On the return, landing in Malaysia late at night can be tiring, so plan a lighter next day.
