What Malaysians should know before booking the Maldives

You are close to paying a deposit and want to be sure nothing will catch you out after you land.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Before you pay, check ten things. Passport valid at least one month beyond your stay, a confirmed booking at a registered property and a return ticket for the visa on arrival. Room prices that may exclude 10% service, 17% Tourism GST and Green Tax. A flight that lands by about 15:30 if you need a seaplane. Local-island rules on alcohol and dress. And the deposit and cancellation terms of whoever takes your money.

Key facts

  • Tourism GST

    17%

    From 1 July 2025

  • Green Tax

    USD 12 or USD 6

    Per guest per night

  • IMUGA

Free, within 96 hours of arrival

Most problems on a Maldives trip trace back to something that could have been checked before payment. The ten checks below take about half an hour and cover entry, price, transfers, rules and money.

Use this list just before you pay a deposit. For the wider planning order, see the Start Here hub.

Entry checks

These four items come from Maldives Immigration's conditions for the free visa on arrival. Meeting them does not guarantee entry, since officers decide at the border, but missing one is the most common avoidable problem.

  • Passport valid at least one month beyond your stay, with a machine-readable zone. Passports with extended validity are refused, so renew rather than extend.
  • Confirmed, prepaid booking at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse. Immigration can ask for it on arrival, so keep the confirmation on your phone and on paper.
  • Return or onward ticket. One-way travellers need proof of how they will leave.
  • IMUGA Traveller Declaration for every traveller, babies included. It is free and can be filed no earlier than 96 hours before arrival; ignore any site asking for payment. Our visa on arrival guide covers the details.

Price checks

Room prices in the Maldives are usually quoted in US dollars and often exclude taxes. Ask every supplier whether the price is nett.

  • Service charge and Tourism GST. A 10% service charge plus 17% GST (16% before 1 July 2025) adds about 28.7% to a room rate. Older blog posts may show the lower GST.
  • Green Tax. USD 12 per guest per night at resorts and larger properties, USD 6 at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer on inhabited islands. Children under 2 are exempt.
  • Transfers and meals. A cheap room at a seaplane resort can cost more overall than a dearer room near Male. Our page on what makes a Maldives trip expensive shows how.

A quick test: on a USD 300 room for two adults at a resort, taxes add about USD 86 and Green Tax USD 24, so the nightly cost is about USD 410 before meals.

Flight and transfer checks

  • Landing time against transfer type. Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset, so land in Male by about 15:30 for a same-day seaplane. From KLIA, AirAsia lands about 09:50, Malaysia Airlines about 11:25 and Batik Air about 21:55.
  • Seaplane baggage. Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage per person, with excess at USD 5 per kg. Pack soft bags, and leave surfboards for a charter.

If you fly from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching, add the KLIA connection and a buffer. See how far the Maldives is from Malaysia for door-to-door timings.

Rules and culture checks

  • Alcohol and pork. Neither can be brought in, including duty-free alcohol. Alcohol is sold only at resorts, liveaboards and licensed tourist facilities.

On inhabited islands, cover shoulders and knees in public and wear swimwear only on designated bikini beaches. Topless sunbathing is prohibited everywhere, including resorts.

On Fridays many shops close around midday for prayers, and some public ferries do not run. Plan transfer days around this if you are staying on a local island.

Money and booking checks

Ask who takes your payment, what the deposit is and what happens if you cancel or the flight changes. Get the inclusions in writing, including meal plan, transfers and taxes.

If you book through a Malaysian travel agency, check its licence on the MOTAC semakan TOBTAB search. Operating a travel business without a licence is an offence under the Tourism Industry Act 1992.

Malaysia has no mission in Male. The High Commission of Malaysia in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is accredited to the Maldives, so note this before you travel.

Who needs extra checks

Families should confirm child policies, cots and transfer fares for children aged 2 to 11. Divers should confirm insurance that covers evacuation and decompression treatment.

Older travellers should ask about walking distances, jetty steps and seaplane boarding. Muslim travellers can ask resorts about halal kitchens and prayer facilities, covered in our Muslim-friendly travel guide.

Questions travellers ask

Do Malaysians need six months of passport validity for the Maldives?
Maldives Immigration asks for a machine-readable passport valid at least one month beyond your stay, not six months. Passports with extended validity are not accepted. Your airline or a transit country may apply its own rule, so check with the airline if you connect anywhere other than KLIA.
Can I bring my own snacks, alcohol or pork?
Snacks are generally fine, but alcohol and pork products cannot be brought into the Maldives, including alcohol bought at duty-free. Items found are confiscated on arrival. Alcohol is available at resorts, liveaboards and licensed tourist facilities.
What if my booking has no address on an inhabited island?
You need a confirmed, prepaid booking at a registered tourist facility for the visa on arrival. Keep the confirmation with the property name and island to hand at immigration. If a private rental cannot show registration, ask for a registered alternative before paying.
Should I buy travel insurance?
Insurance is not an entry requirement, but it is sensible for a trip with boats, seaplanes and remote islands. Divers should check that evacuation and decompression treatment are covered, since only a handful of chambers exist in the country. Read the policy for water sports and transfer delays.
