Maldives five-day itinerary for a first-time visitor

You have five days and wonder whether that is long enough for a seaplane resort or a farther atoll.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Five days (5D4N) is the shortest trip where a seaplane resort starts to make sense, because the transfer cost is spread over four nights and you get three full free days. Take a morning flight from KUL so you land before the 15:30 seaplane cut-off. If you stay near Male by speedboat instead, use the extra day as a weather buffer or a second excursion.

Key facts

  • Shared seaplane

    About USD 400 to 820

Per adult return, varies by resort

  • Shared speedboat near Male

    About USD 100 to 370

    Per person return

  • Children 2 to 11

    Often 30% to 40% less

    On resort transfers

Why five days changes the choice

Five days, or 5D4N, gives you three full free days and makes the farther atolls worth considering. A seaplane costs the same for a short stay or a long one, so four nights shares that cost more fairly.

If you are new to the trip-length question, the itineraries and scheduling hub lays out every option. The shorter four-day first-timer plan suits nearby speedboat islands.

Seaplane or speedboat: the per-night test

This table spreads a mid-range return transfer over the nights you stay. Ranges are third-party benchmarks checked 11 October 2026; your resort's own rate is what counts.

NightsSpeedboat at USD 200 returnSeaplane at USD 600 returnSeaplane extra per night
3USD 67 per nightUSD 200 per nightUSD 133
4USD 50 per nightUSD 150 per nightUSD 100
6USD 33 per nightUSD 100 per nightUSD 67

All figures are per person. For a couple on 4 nights, the seaplane adds about USD 800, or about RM3,270 at RM4.09 per USD.

Decision rule: pay for the seaplane when the resort itself is the reason for the trip (reef, villa style, quiet atoll). If you mainly want a clear lagoon and a water villa, many speedboat resorts near Male cover that.

Day-by-day plan (seaplane resort)

Day 1: Morning flight and seaplane in the afternoon

Take the AirAsia flight that lands around 09:50, or Malaysia Airlines around 11:25. The resort's team meets you at arrivals and checks your bags for the seaplane allowance of 20 kg plus 5 kg.

Seaplanes leave in batches, so a wait in the resort lounge is normal. Expect to reach the island in mid or late afternoon, in time for sunset.

Day 2: Settle in and learn the house reef

Ask the dive or water sports centre for a reef briefing and the safest entry points. Most first-timers find the house reef is the highlight, and it costs nothing extra.

Keep the evening simple. Check the excursion list and the weather forecast for the next two days.

Day 3: Main excursion

Book the excursion you care about most for day three. Popular choices are a snorkel trip to a manta or turtle site, a sandbank picnic or a dolphin cruise.

If the sea is rough, swap days three and four. That is the main benefit of a five-day trip.

Day 4: Free day or second activity

Use this as a spa day, a second snorkel trip, or simply rest. For couples, this is a natural evening for a private dinner.

Check the seaplane departure time at reception. Departures are set by the resort the night before.

Day 5: Seaplane back and fly home

Seaplanes need daylight, so departing guests usually leave in the morning. Trans Maldivian handles departing guests whose international flight leaves after 09:00.

At the airport you may have several hours to wait. A lounge or a short trip to Hulhumale passes the time.

The speedboat version

At a resort near Male or a local island, day one starts before lunch, and you gain most of an afternoon. Put your main excursion on day two and keep day four as a buffer.

From May to November, the southwest monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas, so the buffer matters. December to April is usually drier.

Questions to ask a seaplane resort before you book

A seaplane resort is a bigger commitment, so ask these before paying a deposit. The answers change the real cost and the shape of your first and last days.

  • What is the return seaplane price per adult and per child, and does it include tax?
  • What time does the last seaplane of the day leave Velana in your travel month?
  • If a delay strands you overnight, who arranges and pays for the hotel near the airport?
  • What time will the departure seaplane leave for your flight home?

Who five days suits best

Five days suits honeymooners, couples choosing a seaplane resort, and families who want a slower pace than 4D3N. It also suits travellers from Penang, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching who connect through KUL and lose time on the way.

If you would rather see a local island and a resort, read the five-night split stay. For a full cost picture, use the trip cost calculator or the six-day first-timer plan if you can take one more day.

Questions travellers ask

What happens if my seaplane is delayed on arrival day?
The resort's transfer desk at Velana will hold you in its lounge and move you on the next available flight. If daylight runs out, you may spend a night near the airport. Ask the resort in advance who pays for that night, and keep your phone charged for updates.
Is 5D4N enough for whale sharks in South Ari?
It can be, if you stay in or near South Ari and keep two days open for the trip. Whale sharks are seen year-round in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, most often from August to November, and only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to them. Sightings are never certain.
How heavy can my bag be on a seaplane?
Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage per person, and charges USD 5 per kg over that, plus tax. No single bag may exceed 32 kg. Infants under two fly free but have no allowance, so pack the family bags with this in mind.
Should families with toddlers choose a seaplane?
A seaplane flight is short and smooth in good weather, but it is noisy and the day starts early. Many families prefer a speedboat resort under an hour from the airport. Read our toddler transfer guide before deciding.
