Maldives eight-day itinerary for a first-time visitor

You want a longer first trip and are working out how few leave days it can cost.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

An eight-day trip (8D7N) running Saturday to Saturday gives six full free days, and a public holiday inside the week cuts the leave you need to three or four days. For Group B states, the Deepavali week in November 2026 needs four days of leave, and the Hari Raya Aidilfitri week in March 2027 needs about three, subject to the moon sighting. Use the extra days for a slow first-timer pace, a farther atoll, or a split between two islands.

Key facts

  • Deepavali 2026

    Sunday 8 November

Replacement holiday 9 November in most states

  • Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2027

    Expected 10 and 11 March

    Subject to moon sighting

  • Malaysia Day 2027

    Thursday 16 September

Why eight days is a leave question

Eight days from Saturday to Saturday covers two weekends, so it costs five working days at most. A public holiday inside that week brings it down to three or four.

That makes eight days the longest first trip many working Malaysians can manage. See the itineraries and scheduling hub for other lengths, and the best time to visit the Maldives from Malaysia for season.

Counts assume a Saturday and Sunday weekend (Group B states) and national holidays. The 2027 Hari Raya dates are expected dates, subject to the moon sighting.

Day-by-day plan

Day 1 (Saturday): Fly KUL to Male

A morning arrival (AirAsia around 09:50, Malaysia Airlines around 11:25) gets you to any island the same day. On the Batik Air evening arrival, stay near the airport and move on Sunday morning.

Day 2: Rest and reef briefing

Keep the first full day slow. Snorkel the house reef or the beach and plan the week with the excursion desk.

Days 3 to 4: Main activities

Put weather-dependent trips on these days so they can move if needed. One boat trip plus one rest day is a comfortable rhythm.

Day 5: Optional move

If you are splitting the week, this is the natural day to move from a local island to a resort. Moving midweek also avoids Friday, when many services pause around midday and some public ferries do not run.

Days 6 to 7: Second half

Repeat a favourite trip, try a discovery dive, or plan a quiet last day. Confirm the departure transfer the night before.

Day 8 (Saturday): Fly home

Seaplane resorts send departing guests in daylight, so allow a wait at the airport. Late flights arrive in KUL early the next morning, which leaves Sunday to recover before work.

Three ways to use the extra day

  • A farther atoll: spread the higher seaplane or domestic flight cost over seven nights.
  • A split stay: three or four nights on a local island and three or four at a resort. See the seven-night split stay.
  • A buffer: in the May to November southwest monsoon, an extra day protects your main excursion.

Room rates carry about 28.7% in service and tourism GST, plus Green Tax per guest per night. The trip cost calculator shows what seven nights add up to at your chosen budget.

How to use the leave table for your own dates

Start from the week you want, then count only the working days that fall inside it. Public holidays and your weekend days need no leave.

State holidays can lower the count further. Check your state's list, since some states add holidays that others do not.

Holiday weeks are popular with other Malaysian travellers too, so fares and packages may rise. Search fares for your chosen week and one quieter week either side, then compare the leave saved against the price difference.

If you are travelling with school-age children, line up the school break first and the public holiday second. A week that covers both gives the longest trip for the fewest leave days.

Remember that Hari Raya dates in 2027 depend on the moon sighting. Book flexible fares or keep a day of slack around those dates.

Who eight days suits

Eight days suits working adults who can use a holiday week, families planning around school breaks, and first-timers who want no rush. It also suits travellers flying from Penang, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching via KUL, who lose part of day one.

If leave is tighter, the seven-day plan works with one less night. With more time, the ten-day island holiday itinerary adds a third stage.

Questions travellers ask

Do these leave counts work for Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu?
Not exactly. Group A states rest on Friday and Saturday, so the counts shift by a day. Lay out your own week against your state's calendar, and remember that some public holidays are state holidays only. The method in the table still applies.
Is eight days better than seven?
The extra night mainly helps when you fly the Batik Air evening service, when you want a seaplane resort and a split stay, or when you travel in the wetter months. Otherwise seven days gives most of the benefit with one less night to pay for.
Are fares higher in Malaysian holiday weeks?
Usually, because demand from Malaysia rises at the same time. Search fares early for Deepavali, Hari Raya and school breaks. The cheapest KUL to Male return seen on 11 October 2026 was about RM1,155, but holiday dates are often higher.
Is it fine to travel to the Maldives during Hari Raya?
Yes. The Maldives is a Muslim country, so Eid is celebrated there too, and local islands have mosques. Many Malaysian Muslim families prefer to be home for the first days of Raya, so the second week is often the easier choice.
