One island or two: the decision rule
Five nights is the first local island trip length where a split is reasonable. Use this rule to decide.
| If your priority is... | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rest and an easy trip | One island, 5 nights | Two transfers only, four free days |
| A marine life goal (whale sharks) | Dhigurah, 5 nights | Several chances at a weather-dependent trip |
| Variety, busy plus quiet | Maafushi 3 nights, Fulidhoo 2 nights | Linked by guesthouse speedboat and a limited ferry |
| Two islands with no confirmed link | One island | An unconfirmed route can cost a day or more |
The split works only when the boat link is confirmed for your moving day. The itineraries and scheduling hub and the local island travel hub cover other options.
Version A: one island, five nights
Day 1: Arrive and transfer
Land on a morning flight from KUL (AirAsia about 09:50, Malaysia Airlines about 11:25). Maafushi is a short shared speedboat away; Dhigurah is about two hours by shared speedboat.
Days 2 to 5: Four free days
Plan two or three excursions and at least one rest day. Put the most weather-dependent trip first, for example a whale shark search with a SAMPA-certified guide from Dhigurah.
Whale sharks are seen year-round in South Ari, most often from August to November. Read what to expect on a whale shark trip before you go.
Day 6: Transfer back and fly home
Confirm the boat time the night before. Allow three hours at Velana.
Version B: Maafushi three nights, Fulidhoo two
Day 1: Arrive on Maafushi
Take the shared airport speedboat (USD 25 per person one way). Settle in and book one excursion.
Days 2 and 3: Maafushi
One excursion day and one free day. Ask your Maafushi guesthouse to arrange the speedboat to Fulidhoo, or check the public ferry days.
Day 4: Move to Fulidhoo
Move in the morning on a weekday. Guesthouse speedboats cost about USD 25 per person; the public ferry is about USD 3 but runs only on certain weekdays. Full details are in moving between Maafushi and Fulidhoo.
Day 5: Fulidhoo
A quiet beach day or a snorkel trip from a smaller island. Confirm the transfer to the airport for tomorrow.
Day 6: Transfer to Velana and fly home
Ask your Fulidhoo guesthouse for the airport transfer time and cost, as links vary. Leave a comfortable margin before your flight.
What the split costs you
For a couple, using a USD 90 guesthouse double, checked 11 to 12 October 2026, at RM4.09 per USD:
| Item | One island | Split (3 + 2 nights) |
|---|---|---|
| Room, 5 nights with 28.7% uplift | 90 x 5 x 1.287 = USD 579 | Same, USD 579 |
| Green Tax | 6 x 2 x 5 = USD 60 | Same, USD 60 |
| Extra island move | None | 25 x 2 = USD 50 |
| Free time lost | None | About half a day |
The airport transfers differ by island, so ask each guesthouse for its airport rate. Add meals, excursions and flights in the trip cost calculator.
Checks before you split between two islands
A split only works when both guesthouses agree on the moving day. Get these answers in writing.
- Does the boat between the two islands run on your moving day, at what time, and at what price per person?
- If the boat is cancelled, can your first guesthouse extend you a night, and at what rate?
- Can the second guesthouse arrange your transfer back to Velana to match your flight?
- Are both properties small guesthouses charging Green Tax at USD 6 per guest per night?
How the season changes the plan
From December to April, the drier northeast monsoon usually gives calmer crossings, which suits a split. From May to November, the wetter southwest monsoon can cancel boats, so a single island is the safer plan.
If whale sharks are your goal, August to November has the most sightings in South Ari, even though it falls in the wetter season. Five nights on Dhigurah gives several chances to go out.
Travellers prone to seasickness should keep boat time low. One island near the airport, such as Maafushi, keeps the crossings short in any season.
Who five nights suits
Five nights suits budget couples, friends and Muslim travellers who want halal food and a relaxed village pace. It is also a good length for a whale shark goal, since one trip may be cancelled by weather.
If you want a resort finish, the five-night split stay plans that version. For more islands, see the seven-night local island hopping itinerary.
Questions travellers ask
Which pairs of local islands are easiest to combine?
Do I pay Green Tax twice if I change islands?
Is five nights enough for whale sharks and mantas together?
Can I end the trip at a resort instead?
