The plan at a glance
Seven nights works best as two islands: three nights on Maafushi, then four on Dhigurah. You move once, on day 4, back through Velana airport where both islands' speedboats start.
This page sits in the itineraries and scheduling hub. If a week feels too long, the five-night local island itinerary uses one island only.
| Day | Base | Main activity | Transfer time lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Maafushi | Arrive, settle, beach | About 3 hours incl. airport |
| 2 | Maafushi | Sandbank and snorkel trip | None |
| 3 | Maafushi | Free day or resort day pass | None |
| 4 | Dhigurah | Move via airport | About half a day |
| 5 | Dhigurah | Whale shark trip, SAMPA guide | None |
| 6 | Dhigurah | Sandbank, house reef | None |
| 7 | Dhigurah | Spare day for weather | None |
| 8 | Home | Morning boat to airport | About half a day |
Boat times come from operator and booking listings checked 11 October 2026. They change by season and on Fridays, so confirm with each guesthouse.
Why this pairing and this order
Maafushi first, because it has the most frequent boats from the airport. That makes the arrival day forgiving if your flight is late.
Dhigurah second, because its boats are fewer and longer. Ending there gives you several days in the South Ari whale shark area, which Visit Maldives says has sightings year-round, peaking August to November.
This plan avoids relying on a direct Maafushi to Dhigurah boat. No scheduled service was found, so the move goes through the airport, which is slower but dependable.
Day by day
Day 1: Land at Velana and transfer to Maafushi
Take the AirAsia flight (lands about 09:50) or Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25). Complete the free IMUGA declaration within 96 hours before you land.
Withdraw some rufiyaa or carry US dollars, then meet your guesthouse's shared speedboat. The ride is about 30 to 45 minutes. Spend the afternoon on the bikini beach.
Day 2: Sandbank and snorkel trip
Maafushi has many excursion operators, so this is the easy day to book. A half-day sandbank and snorkel trip leaves time for an early night.
Day 3: Free day on Maafushi
Rest, or buy a resort day pass if you want a taste of resort life. Pack the evening before, and ask your guesthouse to confirm tomorrow's airport boat.
Day 4: Move to Dhigurah via the airport
Take a morning speedboat from Maafushi back to the airport. Then join the Dhigurah shared speedboat, reported around 11:00 or 16:00, for a ride of about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Avoid making this day a Friday, when many boats change times. If the morning Dhigurah boat is missed, the afternoon one is your fallback.
Day 5: Whale shark trip
Book through your guesthouse. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take visitors to whale sharks, and sightings are never guaranteed.
Day 6: Sandbank and house reef
Dhigurah's long sandbank and lagoon make an easy day. If yesterday's trip missed the whale sharks, ask about a second attempt.
Day 7: Spare day
Keep this free for weather. In the southwest monsoon (about May to November), boats are delayed more often.
Day 8: Speedboat to the airport and fly home
Take the morning boat to Velana. Both Malaysian carriers' return flights leave Male later in the day, but allow at least three hours after landing at the airport. If the morning boat does not run, plan a final night in Hulhumale instead.
What the transfers really cost in time and money
The trip has four speedboat legs. For two adults, using the listed fares:
- Maafushi: USD 25 × 2 people × 2 legs = USD 100.
- Dhigurah: USD 50 to 65 × 2 × 2 = USD 200 to 260.
- Total: USD 300 to 360, about RM1,227 to RM1,472 at RM4.09.
Add Green Tax of USD 6 × 2 guests × 7 nights = USD 84, about RM344. That brings speedboats plus Green Tax to roughly RM1,570 to RM1,820.

Checks to make before you pay deposits
- Ask both guesthouses for current boat times on your exact dates.
- Make sure day 4 and day 8 are not Fridays.
- Ask whether the speedboat fare is per person or per boat, and if taxes are included.
- Confirm who books the whale shark trip and whether the guide is SAMPA certified.
- Check card payment and ATMs, and carry small US dollar notes.
Who this plan suits, and alternatives
It suits couples, friend groups and confident first-timers who want variety without constant packing. Families with young children may prefer one island, since each move is tiring.
Divers could swap Maafushi for Rasdhoo, as covered in moving between Thoddoo and Rasdhoo. If you end with a resort splurge instead, read moving from Dhigurah to a Maldives resort. With more time, the ten-night island hopping itinerary adds a third island.
