Maldives four-night trip cost with a late-arrival hotel night

Your flight lands in the evening, your resort is a seaplane away, and you need to know what the extra airport night does to the budget.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

If you land after about 15:30, seaplane resorts cannot take you the same day, so you need a night near the airport. A mid-priced Hulhumale guesthouse at USD 120 before tax costs about RM681 for two, including tax and Green Tax. Swapping one of four resort nights for it saves money but loses a resort night; adding it as a fifth night keeps the full resort stay for about RM681 more.

Key facts

When do you need a hotel night on arrival?

You need it when your flight lands too late to reach your resort the same day. For seaplane resorts the practical cut-off is landing in Male by about 15:30, because seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset (Trans Maldivian Airways FAQ, checked 11 Oct 2026).

From Kuala Lumpur, Batik Air's sample schedule lands around 21:55 Maldives time. AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrive in time. More on how arrival time shapes costs is on our Budget and Real Cost hub.

What the airport-area night costs

Hulhumale, the island beside the airport, has hotels and guesthouses across a wide price range. The holiday.com.mv guesthouse band of USD 60 to 180 per room per night before tax is a fair guide (checked 11 Oct 2026).

Using USD 120 for two adults:

Green Tax, small guesthouse, 2 guestsUSD 6 x 2USD 12.00
Night totalUSD 166.44

At a larger hotel charging USD 12 Green Tax, the night is about RM730. Add a short taxi or hotel pickup, which you should confirm with the property.

Three ways to structure a four-night resort trip

Assume a couple, a seaplane resort at USD 500 per night before tax, which is USD 667.50 with tax and Green Tax, or about RM2,730 per night. Flights and seaplane are the same in each option and left out.

OptionNightsAccommodation costResort nights
A: Morning flight, straight to resort4 resortabout RM10,9204
B: Evening flight, airport night, then 3 resort1 airport + 3 resortabout RM8,8713
C: Evening flight, airport night, then 4 resort1 airport + 4 resortabout RM11,6014

Option B looks cheapest, but it buys one less resort night. Option C keeps the full resort stay for about RM681 more than A, and needs one extra day of leave.

Is the cheaper evening flight worth it?

Compare the fare saving with the cost of the extra night. On 11 Oct 2026, Batik Air's cheapest one-way was about RM479 and AirAsia's about RM473 (Traveloka, November departures), so the evening flight saved nothing on that search.

Against Malaysia Airlines at about RM1,028 to RM1,049 one way, the evening flight saved about RM550 per person, or RM1,100 for a couple. That covers the RM681 airport night with room to spare.

So the rule is simple. If the late flight saves more than the airport night for your group, it can pay off. If fares are similar, the morning flight is the better buy.

What the airport night costs beyond money

You lose part of a day. The seaplane usually leaves the next morning, so you reach the resort around midday instead of the previous afternoon.

You also gain something. A quiet night lets you rest after the flight, which suits families with young children and older travellers. Hulhumale has a beach and cafés, so the evening is not wasted.

Checklist before you book a late arrival

  • Confirm your resort's transfer type: seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight.
  • Ask the resort for its last transfer time and any night surcharge.
  • Book the airport night with a pickup, and note the property's Green Tax rate.
  • Ask who arranges the morning transfer back to the seaplane terminal.
  • Check whether your package already includes a Hulhumale night.
  • Keep the IMUGA declaration timing in mind: no earlier than 96 hours before arrival.

Our arrival and last transfer buffer planner helps you test flight times against transfer cut-offs.

Who suits each option

Option A suits couples on a short break who can take the morning flight, and anyone at a seaplane resort who wants the full stay. Option C suits travellers on a cheap evening fare who can spare the day.

Option B suits budget-minded travellers who accept three resort nights. If your resort is a speedboat ride from Male, you may avoid the airport night altogether, which is the trade-off covered in cheap flight versus easy transfer.

Rates and schedules change, so treat these figures as a guide and confirm both before you commit.

Questions travellers ask

Can a speedboat resort take me after an evening arrival?
Some resorts close to Male run speedboat transfers after dark, but not all, and some charge more at night. Ask the resort in writing for the last transfer time and any night surcharge before choosing a late flight. If they cannot transfer you, budget the airport-area night as on this page.
Is Green Tax charged on the Hulhumale night?
Yes. The MIRA circular applies Green Tax to hotels and guesthouses. A guesthouse on an inhabited island with 50 rooms or fewer charges USD 6 per guest per night, and a larger hotel USD 12. Ask the property which rate applies.
Should I book the airport night through my package or separately?
Either works. Booking it inside the package keeps one point of contact if the flight is delayed. Booking separately can be cheaper but leaves you to arrange the airport pickup and the morning return to the seaplane lounge.
Does a morning flight avoid this night entirely?
Usually. AirAsia lands around 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines around 11:25 Maldives time on the sample schedule, both well before the 15:30 cut-off. A delay or a long immigration queue can still push you late, so keep some slack.
