Maldives 4D3N versus 5D4N: what the extra hotel night actually costs

You are choosing between 4D3N and 5D4N and want to know what the fourth night really adds to the bill.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

The extra night costs only the room, its taxes, Green Tax and that day's meals, because flights and transfers are already paid. At a USD 100 guesthouse that is about RM575 per room. At a USD 400 resort room it is about RM2,204, and at a USD 1,000 water villa about RM5,362, before meals. Since 4D3N gives you only two full island days, the fourth night adds a 50% gain in beach time.

Key facts

  • Guesthouse night

    About RM575

USD 100 room, 2 adults, before meals

  • Resort night

    About RM2,204

USD 400 room, 2 adults, before meals

  • Water villa night

    About RM5,362

USD 1,000 room, 2 adults, before meals

What does one extra Maldives night really cost?

It costs the room for one more night, plus about 28.7% in service charge and GST, plus Green Tax for each guest, plus that day's meals. Your flights, airport transfers and entry paperwork do not change.

That is why the step from 4D3N to 5D4N is smaller than the jump in package prices suggests. For more on what goes into a trip total, start at our Budget and Real Cost hub.

The marginal night, worked out for three room types

All rows assume two adults, rates per room before tax from the holiday.com.mv bands (checked 11 Oct 2026), and RM4.09 per USD.

Meals are extra unless your board is included. On a resort meal plan, add that plan's nightly charge for two people to the row.

Why 4D3N gives less beach time than it sounds

A 4D3N trip has three nights but only two full island days. Day one is arrival and transfer, and day four is checkout and the flight home.

AirAsia lands in Male around 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines around 11:25 (Traveloka sample, Oct 2026), so a speedboat resort can still give you an afternoon on day one. Batik Air lands around 21:55, so day one is spent travelling.

5D4N adds a third full day. That is a 50% increase in full beach days for one extra night, which is the core of the value case.

Cost per full island day: a couple at a USD 400 resort

Here the fixed costs are two return flights at about RM1,155 each (Traveloka, 11 Oct 2026) and a shared speedboat at an assumed USD 200 per person return, inside the USD 100 to 370 range on immaldives.com.

What else can change when you add a night

The marginal night is usually simple, but a few things can push it higher. Check each one before you assume the extra night costs only the room.

  • Weekend or peak supplements. Some resorts charge more on certain nights or during festive periods. The extra night may fall inside a higher rate band than the first three.
  • Minimum stays. Over Christmas, New Year and some school holidays, resorts may require four or more nights anyway. Then 5D4N is not optional.
  • Package structure. A Malaysian 4D3N package may not have a 5D4N version at the same resort. Adding a night outside the package is often priced at the resort's own rate.
  • Meal plans. On all-inclusive, the nightly meal charge for two can be a large share of the extra night. Ask for the plan's per-night cost separately.
  • Return flight timing. If your flight home leaves early in the morning, a seaplane resort may not be able to deliver you in time. Trans Maldivian handles guests whose international flight leaves after 09:00.

Is the extra night better spent somewhere cheaper?

Often, yes, if you value nights more than continuity. A night on a local island or in Hulhumale costs a fraction of a resort night.

At a USD 100 guesthouse the night costs about RM575 for two, against RM2,204 at the resort. The catch is one more transfer and less time unpacked in one place. Our guide to budgeting a split stay between resort and guesthouse shows how to price that pattern.

When 4D3N is still the better choice

4D3N suits travellers with tight leave, budget local-island trips where the night is cheap but time is short, and anyone combining the Maldives with another destination.

It also suits a first visit where you want to test the experience before a longer stay. If the extra night means a cheaper room category, keep 4D3N in the better room instead.

When 5D4N earns its extra night

Choose 5D4N when transfers are expensive, such as seaplanes at USD 400 to 820 per adult return. The higher the fixed cost, the more an extra night spreads it.

It also helps on Batik Air's evening arrival, or when you want a buffer for weather on a long speedboat or domestic flight. For a single extra night in a different villa, see the cost of adding one water villa night.

Rates move by season, so treat these as a guide and confirm live prices.

Questions travellers ask

Is a 5D4N package always dearer per night than 4D3N?
No. Per night it is often cheaper, because the fixed costs of transfers and arrival-day services are spread over more nights. The total is higher, but the cost per beach day usually falls. Compare total trip cost divided by full island days, not the headline package price.
Do I need extra annual leave for 5D4N?
Usually one more day. With a morning AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines flight you land before noon Maldives time, so day one is still usable. Many Malaysians pair 5D4N with a public holiday or a weekend to keep leave to three working days.
Can I add the extra night to only part of the trip?
Yes. Some travellers add a cheap first night in Hulhumale or on a local island, then move to a resort. That lowers the cost of the extra night but adds a transfer. Our split-stay page shows how to budget that pattern.
Will the extra night change my Green Tax?
Yes. Green Tax is per guest per night, so a couple adds USD 24 at a resort or USD 12 at a small guesthouse for each extra night. Children under two are exempt.
