Maldives Green Tax when changing hotels mid-trip: avoiding double counting

You are splitting your Maldives trip between a local island, a resort or a Hulhumale airport hotel, and want to be sure each night's Green Tax is charged once.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Green Tax is charged per guest per night by the property where you sleep that night: USD 12 at resorts and larger hotels, USD 6 at inhabited-island guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer, and nothing for children under two. On a split stay, each night belongs to exactly one property, so your total nights of Green Tax should equal your total nights in the Maldives. A couple doing 2 guesthouse nights, 2 resort nights and 1 airport-hotel night should pay USD 84 (about RM344) in total.

How Green Tax works when you change hotels

Green Tax is a fee charged per guest per night by the property where you sleep. It is USD 12 at resorts, larger hotels and tourist vessels, and USD 6 at hotels and guesthouses on inhabited islands with 50 rooms or fewer, according to the MIRA circular effective 1 January 2025.

Because the tax follows the night, a split stay does not create extra tax. Each property charges only for the nights you spend with it. For the full rules, see our Green Tax guide for Malaysian travellers, and the wider Budget and Real Cost hub.

The risk is not a second tax. It is a second line on paper: one in your package price and one on a hotel bill, or two quotes that each count the changeover night.

The one check that catches double counting

Count your nights in the Maldives, then count your Green Tax nights across every quote and bill. The two numbers must match, per guest.

A five-night trip for two adults should show exactly ten guest-nights of Green Tax. If you add up eleven or twelve, one night has been charged twice. If you find nine, a night is missing and will likely appear at checkout.

Worked example: a couple on a three-property trip

Here is a common Malaysian split: land on the AirAsia morning flight, two nights on a local island, two nights at a resort, one night near the airport before an early flight home. The rates use RM4.09 per USD.

NightWhere you sleepRate per guestCouple, USDCouple, RM
1Maafushi guesthouse (under 50 rooms)USD 61249.08
2Maafushi guesthouseUSD 61249.08
3Resort (check in day 3)USD 122498.16
4ResortUSD 122498.16
5Hulhumale small hotel (under 50 rooms)USD 61249.08
Total5 nights, 10 guest-nights84343.56

Night 3 belongs only to the resort, even though you also spent the morning at the guesthouse. The guesthouse charges nights 1 and 2, and should not bill you for the day you check out.

If the Hulhumale hotel has more than 50 rooms, night 5 is charged at USD 12. That lifts the couple's total to USD 96, or about RM393. Ask the hotel which rate applies.

Where double counting actually happens

In practice, the tax is rarely charged twice by the government. The overlap comes from how packages and bills are assembled.

  • Package says "Green Tax included" and the hotel bills it again. The HolidayGoGoGo Arena Beach package checked on 12 October 2026 lists Green Tax and government taxes as included. If you extend with a direct hotel booking, the hotel's own bill should cover only the extra nights.
  • Two agency quotes both count the changeover night. A twin-island quote built from two separate products may give each half "3 nights" when the real split is 2 plus 2.
  • A transit night booked separately. An airport hotel booked online may show tax at checkout, while your package quote also added a "pre-departure night" line.
  • Old rates. Quotes or blogs from before 2025 show USD 6 at resorts and USD 3 at guesthouses. Correct those lines, do not add a second one.

Twin-island packages, such as the HolidayGoGoGo 5D4N package pairing Arena Beach with Centara Ras Fushi (checked 11 October 2026), state Green Tax as included across both islands. In that case your only Green Tax check is any extra night you add yourself.

A five-step ledger before you pay

Use this whenever your trip touches two or more properties.

  1. Write each night's date and the property you sleep at.
  2. Mark each night USD 12 or USD 6, using the property type. Children under two count as zero.
  3. Multiply by the number of guests aged two and over.
  4. Tick which nights are "included" in a package, and which will be paid at the hotel.
  5. Confirm that every night is ticked exactly once, then convert at about RM4.09 per USD.

If a night is ticked twice, ask the agency to remove it before paying the balance. If a night is not ticked at all, budget for it at checkout.

You can run the same numbers, plus GST and service charge, in our Green Tax and tourism GST calculator.

Who needs to check this most carefully

The ledger matters most for travellers who build their own split stay: local island plus resort combinations, divers adding a liveaboard, and families adding an airport night before a morning flight home.

A single-resort package that says Green Tax is included needs little checking. Your effort is better spent on the meal plan and transfer, which move the bill far more than a mis-counted night.

Questions travellers ask

Do I pay Green Tax for a day-use room before a late flight?
Green Tax is set per guest per night, so a day-use room with no overnight stay should not normally create an extra night of tax. Practices can differ by property, so if a day room appears on your quote, ask the hotel whether Green Tax is being added and for which date. Keep the answer in writing with your booking.
What if I sleep on a liveaboard for part of the trip?
Tourist vessels are among the establishments that charge Green Tax at USD 12 per guest per night under the MIRA circular. Count each liveaboard night once in your ledger like any other night. Check whether the liveaboard price already includes it, because many dive boat prices are quoted before taxes.
My flight lands after midnight. Does the first night count?
If you check in after midnight, ask the property how it dates the booking. Many hotels charge the night from the previous evening so your room is ready on arrival, which means a Green Tax night applies. Plan that night into your ledger instead of assuming it is free.
Is Green Tax refunded if I leave a resort early?
Policies on unused nights vary by hotel and package. Since the tax is tied to nights stayed, ask the resort or agency before departure whether unused nights' Green Tax will be refunded or credited, and get the answer on your final invoice.
