Quick answer

You can submit the IMUGA Traveller Declaration no earlier than 96 hours before you land in the Maldives. For an AirAsia flight landing at about 09:50 on a Saturday, the window opens at 09:50 Maldives time on Tuesday, which is 12:50 in Malaysia. The declaration is free, and every traveller needs one, infants included.

Earliest time to submit

Enter a date and time to see when the declaration opens.

The declaration is free. Use only the official portal, and ignore any site that asks for payment.

Times assume Maldives UTC+5 and Malaysia UTC+8, with no daylight saving in either country. If your flight is rescheduled, check the window again.

How to use the timer

Choose what you know. Most people know their arrival in the Maldives from the ticket, so start there and enter the date and time printed for Male.

If you only know your departure time from Malaysia, switch modes. Enter the date and time in Malaysia and the flight length. Kuala Lumpur to Male nonstop takes about 4h15 to 4h25.

The result shows the earliest moment you can submit, in Maldives time and Malaysia time. If the window is already open, the tool says so.

Tick off the checklist as you gather documents, then use the button to open the official portal. For a field-by-field walk-through, read our step-by-step IMUGA guide.

The rule behind the 96 hours

Maldives Immigration asks every arriving traveller to submit an online Traveller Declaration on IMUGA. It can be submitted no earlier than 96 hours before arrival.

The 96 hours count back from your arrival in the Maldives, in Maldives time (UTC+5). Malaysia is UTC+8, three hours ahead. Neither country uses daylight saving, so the gap never changes.

That is why the window often opens at an awkward Malaysian hour. A flight landing at 21:55 in Male means the window opens at 00:55 in Malaysia, four days earlier.

Our page on when to complete IMUGA before your flight covers the timing choices in more detail.

Worked examples for flights from Kuala Lumpur

These use the sample nonstop times seen on Traveloka for 8 to 15 October 2026. Airlines change schedules, so check your own ticket.

FlightLands in Male (local)Arrival dayWindow opens, Maldives timeWindow opens, Malaysia time
AirAsiaAbout 09:50SaturdayTuesday 09:50Tuesday 12:50
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:25SaturdayTuesday 11:25Tuesday 14:25
Batik AirAbout 21:55SaturdayTuesday 21:55Wednesday 00:55

The arithmetic is simple: subtract four full days from the arrival time in Male. Then add three hours to read it on a Malaysian clock.

A departure late at night can also change the date. Leaving Kuala Lumpur at 23:30 on 31 December with a 4h15 flight lands at 00:45 on 1 January, Maldives time. The window then opens at 00:45 on 28 December, Maldives time.

What to prepare before you start

Gather these before you open the form. It goes faster, and you are less likely to make a typing mistake.

  • Passport for each traveller. It must be valid for at least one month beyond your stay, under the visa on arrival rules.
  • One declaration per person. Children and infants each need their own.
  • Flight details. Flight number, date and arrival time in Male.
  • First night address. The name and island of your resort, hotel or guesthouse.
  • Contact details. An email address and a phone number that work while you travel.
  • Health and customs answers. Cash above USD 10,000 must be declared. Alcohol and pork cannot be brought in.
  • A saved copy. Keep a screenshot or download for each person.

If you notice a mistake after you submit, our guide to fixing incorrect information on IMUGA explains the options.

Who this suits and what to do next

The timer suits anyone flying from Malaysia, and is most useful for families filling in several forms, and travellers on the late Batik Air flight whose window opens around midnight in Malaysia.

After IMUGA, check the rest of your entry paperwork in the entry and travel paperwork hub. Then confirm your arrival time works for your transfer with the arrival and transfer buffer planner.

Questions travellers ask

What happens if I try to submit earlier than 96 hours?
The portal will not accept a declaration for an arrival more than 96 hours away. Set a reminder for the opening time the timer shows, in Malaysia time if that is the clock on your phone. Submitting a day or two before you fly is a comfortable routine for most travellers.
Do I need to fill in a declaration when I leave the Maldives?
No. The departure declaration was dropped from 15 August 2024, so you only complete the arrival declaration. Airlines may still ask for your arrival QR code or confirmation at check-in in Kuala Lumpur, so keep a copy on your phone.
Can one person submit for the whole family?
One adult can usually fill in the forms for the group, but each traveller needs their own declaration with their own passport details, including babies. Check the portal for how it groups family members, and save a confirmation for every person.
My flight is delayed past midnight. Do I need to resubmit?
A delay changes your arrival time, not the rules. If your arrival date changes, check the declaration on the official portal and update it if the form allows, following our guide on changing dates after you submit. Run the timer again with the new arrival time.
