How to use the planner
Enter your total days away, travel days included. Five days gives four nights, the classic 5D4N trip.
Choose your departure airport and your flight to Male: AirAsia (lands about 09:50), Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25), Batik Air (about 21:55), or another flight with its landing time in Maldives time. Then choose how you reach your last island: shared speedboat, resort speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight then boat.
Finally, pick how many islands or resorts you would like to stay on, from one to three. The result shows your nights on the islands out of the total, the days spent on transfers, and a recommended split, with notes explaining every adjustment. You can copy the plan or send it with your trip brief.
How usable nights are worked out
The planner starts with total nights (days minus one) and takes away any night that is not on an island.
- A night in Kuala Lumpur. Flying from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching, the planner works back from the KLIA departure. It allows three hours from Peninsular airports and five from Sabah and Sarawak after a first flight at about 06:00. If that is too early, it adds a KL night.
- A night in Hulhumale. It adds about 60 minutes for immigration and bags to your landing time, then checks the transfer window. If you are ready after the last planned departure, or land after about 15:30 for a seaplane, the first night is near the airport.
- Island nights. What is left is spent on islands.
Days lost to transfers count half the arrival day (a full day after a Hulhumale night), the whole return day, a full day for a KL night and half a day for each change of island.
How the split between islands is decided
The number of stops depends on island nights: one stop under four nights, up to two from four nights, up to three from seven. Seaplane and domestic-flight resorts need at least three nights, so with fewer than five island nights the planner keeps one stop.
When there are two or three stops, the final stop gets at least two nights, or three for a seaplane resort, and the remaining nights are spread across the earlier local islands. The usual shape is a local island first, then a resort, which puts the most comfortable nights at the end of the trip.
Worked example 1: 5D4N from KLIA with a split stay
A couple flies from KUL on Malaysia Airlines, landing about 11:25, with a resort speedboat and two stops. They are ready to leave the airport at about 12:25, well inside the speedboat window, so there is no Hulhumale night.
| Stop | Nights |
|---|---|
| Local island | 2 |
| Speedboat resort | 2 |
| Island nights | 4 of 4 |
| Days on transfers | 2 |
The two days on transfers are half the arrival day, half a day moving islands and the return day. This is about the shortest trip where a split stay makes sense.
Worked example 2: 5D4N from Penang to a seaplane resort
A family flies from Penang to catch the AirAsia morning flight, lands about 09:50 and wants two stops ending at a seaplane resort. The KLIA departure at about 08:35 is too early for a connection, so the planner adds a KL night and a note to check the return connection.
That leaves three island nights. Because the final stop is a seaplane resort, the planner keeps one stop for all three nights and explains why. Days on transfers come to 2.5.
On the same dates with a Batik Air evening landing and a shared speedboat, the first night is in Hulhumale instead, again leaving three island nights at one island.
Who it suits, and what to do next
The planner suits anyone fitting a Maldives trip into limited leave, especially travellers outside the Klang Valley who need a connection. With seven nights or more, the seven-night island hopping planner goes further.
Next, check your landing time with the flight arrival and transfer planner, then cost the plan with the trip cost calculator or the split stay cost calculator. More on scheduling is in the itineraries and scheduling hub.
