Maldives seven-day itinerary for a first-time visitor

You have a full week and are wondering whether to stay put on one island or see two.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

For a first week in the Maldives (7D6N), one island with five free days is the most relaxing plan, and a split between a local island and a resort is the best way to see two sides of the country. Each island move costs about half a day and an extra transfer. If your flight home leaves late at night, a final night near the airport is rarely needed, but an early-morning flight often makes one worthwhile.

How a first week usually works best

A seven-day trip gives you five full free days, which is long enough to relax and still try several activities. The big choice is how many islands to use.

For most first-timers the answer is one island, or two when one is a local island and one a resort. The itineraries and scheduling hub covers the other lengths, and our resort versus local island comparison helps if you have not chosen a style yet.

One base, two bases or a final airport night

Use this table to pick a structure. The "time on transfers" column counts boat and airport waiting time, not flight time from Malaysia.

StructureTransfers in the MaldivesTime on transfersBest for
One island, 6 nights2About 1 day in totalCouples, families, anyone who wants rest
Local island 3 nights, then resort 3 nights3 to 4About 1.5 daysSeeing local life and a resort
One island 5 nights, then Hulhumale 1 night3About 1.5 daysEarly-morning flights home, seaplane resorts
Two resorts, 3 nights each4About 2 daysRarely worth it on a first trip

Decision rule: each extra island costs about half a day. Make the move only if the second place gives you something the first cannot, such as a resort lagoon after a budget stay.

The full two-island plan is in the seven-night split stay itinerary. The plan below uses one island.

Day-by-day plan (one island)

Day 1: Arrive and settle

The AirAsia arrival around 09:50 or the Malaysia Airlines arrival around 11:25 lets you reach any resort the same day. Seaplane transfers need you on the ground by about 15:30.

With the Batik Air arrival around 21:55, sleep near the airport and transfer after breakfast. You lose most of a free day, which a week can absorb.

Day 2: Recovery and reef orientation

Keep the first full day light. Learn the house reef, check the excursion list and look at the forecast.

Day 3: First boat excursion

Choose the excursion with the most weather risk first, such as a manta or whale shark trip. That leaves three days to rebook if it is cancelled.

Day 4: Rest day

A beach, a book and an early dinner. Rest days matter more than first-timers expect in the heat.

Day 5: Second excursion or a new skill

Try a discovery dive, a sandbank picnic or a dolphin cruise. Families can use the kids' club while parents snorkel.

Day 6: Free day and last evening

Repeat your favourite activity. Settle the bill and confirm the departure transfer the night before.

Day 7: Fly home

Leave the island in time to reach Velana three hours before departure. On a late-evening flight, ask for a late check-out or a day room.

What a week costs, in outline

A week is about six nights of room, taxes and Green Tax, plus two transfers and your flight. Room rates carry about 28.7% in service charge and tourism GST, and Green Tax adds USD 6 or USD 12 per guest per night.

For worked examples by budget, see what a Maldives trip costs from Malaysia or run your dates in the trip cost calculator. Prices vary by date, so treat any figure as a guide until you have a quotation.

Planning for weather across a week

A week absorbs bad weather better than any shorter trip. Even in the wetter May to November months, rain often comes in spells, with clearer hours between.

Keep two boat trips in the first half of the week. If both are cancelled, you still have days five and six to try again.

On wet afternoons, a spa, a cooking class or a pool day keeps the trip on track. Ask the resort which activities run indoors before you book, especially with children.

Who a seven-day trip suits

A week suits first-timers who want a real rest, honeymooners, and families using a school break. The 2026 year-end school holiday runs 5 to 31 December for Group B states, in the drier season.

Shorter trips work better if leave is tight, and the six-day first-timer plan keeps most of the benefits. If you can add a day, the eight-day plan shows how to use leave around public holidays.

Questions travellers ask

Is a week in the Maldives too long for a first visit?
Not for most people. A week gives time to recover from the flight, plan around the weather and try several activities. Travellers who get restless on small islands often split the week between a local island and a resort, which adds variety.
Can I hop between resorts in a week?
You can, but each resort runs its own transfers from the airport, so a move usually means going back to Velana and out again. That costs time and two extra transfers. Most first-timers get better value from one resort or a local island and resort pair.
When should I stay my last night near the airport?
When your flight home leaves early in the morning, or when your resort is seaplane-only and your flight is before about mid-morning. Seaplanes fly in daylight, so an early departure cannot be reached from a distant resort on the same day.
What should I check about Fridays on a seven-day trip?
Every week-long trip includes a Friday. Many shops and services close around midday for prayers, and some public ferries do not run. Avoid planning an island move by public ferry on a Friday, and confirm speedboat times with your hosts.
