Why the Maldives needs extra allergy planning
On a resort island, every meal comes from the resort's own kitchens. You cannot walk to another restaurant or supermarket if the menu is unsafe.
The other factor is distance. UK government advice says the only fully equipped hospitals are in Male and Hulhumale, and many islands are hours away from emergency care.
This page focuses on serious allergies where a reaction could need emergency treatment. It sits in our safety and problem-solving hub. For everyday food questions, see how to communicate food allergies to Maldives hotels.
Planning questions to send before you book
Email these to every shortlisted resort or guesthouse. Specific, written answers are the first test the property must pass.
| Question | A reassuring answer | A warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Can the chef confirm, in writing, how they handle [your allergen]? | Names steps: separate prep, clean utensils, ingredient checks | "All our food is safe" with no detail |
| Is coconut, fish stock or nut oil used in sauces, curries or frying? | Lists which dishes and offers alternatives | Does not know |
| Can meals be plated from the kitchen instead of the buffet? | Yes, with how to arrange it | Buffet only |
| Is a doctor or nurse on the island day and night? | Yes, with hours | Unclear or "on call from another island" |
| How long does it take to reach a hospital in Male, day and night? | Gives times and transport | Cannot say |
| Can you store medicines that need a fridge? | Yes, in the clinic or room | No |
| Is there epinephrine (adrenaline) in the clinic? | Yes | Does not know |
Keep the replies and bring printed copies. If a property gives vague answers, that is your answer.
Choosing the island: kitchen and distance together
A resort 20 to 40 minutes by speedboat from Male gives faster access to hospital care, at any hour. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a seaplane resort may face a long night boat ride in an emergency.
Local islands have more cafes, but smaller kitchens may have less allergy training and less written ingredient detail. A resort with a dedicated chef contact can be the safer choice for severe allergies.
How remote medical care is on a resort island explains the distances by transfer type.
What to pack from Malaysia
- Prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors. The NHS advises people at risk of anaphylaxis to carry two at all times. Check expiry dates before you fly.
- Antihistamines and other prescribed medicines in original packaging.
- A doctor's letter describing the allergy and medicines, useful at airport security and with the resort doctor.
- Allergy cards in English listing what you cannot eat, including hidden forms.
- Safe snacks for flights and transfers, avoiding pork, which cannot be brought into the Maldives.
- An action plan your travel companions have read.
Keep auto-injectors in your hand bag, never in checked luggage. On boat transfers, keep them dry in a pouch.
At the resort: daily habits
Meet the restaurant manager or chef on the first evening. Repeat your allergy at every meal, even after the first day.
Check room service, minibar snacks, afternoon tea and spa treats, which come from different teams. Ask about cooking oils at barbecues and theme nights.
If a reaction starts, follow your action plan and use the auto-injector as directed. Then call the front desk and 102 for an ambulance (UK FCDO, checked 12 Oct 2026).
Who this suits and when to rethink
Travellers with well-managed allergies and clear written answers from a resort near Male can plan a Maldives trip with confidence. Children with allergies have extra points covered in family holidays with a child with food allergies.
If your allergist advises against remote travel, or no shortlisted property can answer specifically, a destination with hospitals nearby may be the better choice this time.
Days out, transfers and excursions
Allergy risk does not stop at the restaurant. Sandbank picnics, sunset cruises, local island visits and airport lounges all serve food prepared elsewhere.
Ask the resort to tell the excursion team about the allergy, and carry your own safe snacks on every trip. Keep auto-injectors with you on boats, not left in the room.
On local islands, many cafes cook with coconut, fish and shared fryers, and staff may not know every ingredient. Choose simple dishes, ask clearly and avoid anything you cannot confirm.
Long transfers by domestic flight or speedboat can put you an hour or more from a clinic. Plan meals before you travel on transfer days.
A short message template for resorts
Use plain English and put the allergy first. For example: "One guest has a severe allergy to peanuts and tree nuts, with a risk of anaphylaxis. Please confirm in writing how the kitchen prevents cross-contact, whether plated meals are possible, and how long it takes to reach hospital in Male by day and night."
Send it before you pay, and again a week before arrival.
