Act on arrival, not at checkout
If your villa is not what your package described, raise it within the first hour. Resorts can often move you the same day, but it gets harder once you unpack or as the resort fills.
Be specific. "We booked a Water Villa with Pool, and this is a Beach Villa" is easy to act on, while "this is not what we expected" is not.
This page sits in our safety and problem-solving hub. The detailed evidence list is in room not the booked villa category: evidence checklist.
Is it a real mismatch? A quick test
Not every disappointment is a mismatch. This table helps you decide what to ask for.
| What happened | Likely a mismatch? | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Different villa category from the confirmation | Yes | The booked category or a fair alternative |
| Different meal plan from the confirmation | Yes | The booked meal plan, backdated |
| Twin beds instead of a confirmed double | Often | Bed change or a different villa |
| Promised features missing (pool, sea view, connecting room) | Yes, if in writing | The feature, or a written note of the difference |
| Correct category but older or less renovated | Usually not | A renovated villa if available |
| Location on the island not what you hoped | Only if promised in writing | A move, if possible |
| Broken air conditioning, leaks, pests | Not a mismatch but a fault | Repair or a move today |
The key question is what was written down. Check the confirmation, package description and any messages from the agent.
Step by step: the first 24 hours
- Show your confirmation at the front desk. Ask what reservation the resort holds for you.
- Ask for the booked category. If unavailable today, ask when it will be, and in writing.
- Photograph everything. The room, the villa sign or number, and the resort's reservation record if they show it.
- Message the agent or platform you paid. Send photos, the confirmation and what the resort said.
- Keep it in writing. Ask for email or messaging replies rather than phone calls only.
- Decide what you accept. A move tomorrow, an upgrade, or a partial refund, confirmed in writing.
Stay polite with resort staff. They are usually the people who can fix the problem fastest.
Who is responsible
It depends on who you paid and what they promised. A resort booked directly answers for its own description, while a package from a Malaysian agency involves the agency too.
If you used a Malaysian agency, check its licence on the MOTAC TOBTAB search. A licensed travel business has a registered address you can send a formal complaint to.
Who arranges and books a trip requested through MaldivesQuest explains how quotations from a provider work, if that is how you planned.
If it is not fixed at the resort
Send a written complaint to the agent or booking platform within a few days of returning. Attach the confirmation, photos and messages, and state the remedy you want, such as a partial refund for the nights affected.
If a Malaysian business does not respond fairly, the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia (TTPM) handles many consumer claims under the Consumer Protection Act 1999. Check its current claim limits and process on the TTPM website before filing.

Prevent it at the quotation stage
Most mismatches come from vague package wording. Before paying, check that the quotation names the exact villa category, bed type, meal plan and any promised view or pool.
Confirm whether the price is per room or per person, and ask the agent to send the resort's own confirmation once the booking is made.
Keep the conversation productive
Front desk staff deal with the room, not the contract between you and your agent. A calm, specific request gets better results than a complaint about the whole trip.
Bring the confirmation on your phone, say which detail differs and ask what the resort can offer today. If the manager on duty cannot help, ask when the reservations manager will be available, and arrange a time.
Note the names and roles of staff you speak with, and the times. This record helps your agent and supports any later complaint.
What a fair outcome often looks like
Outcomes vary, but these are common and reasonable to ask for:
- A move to the booked category on the next available night.
- A free upgrade for the nights affected.
- A credit on your resort bill, confirmed in writing.
- A partial refund from the agent or platform for the nights in the wrong category.
Decide which one matters most to you before the conversation. For honeymooners, the right villa on the special night may matter more than a refund.
Questions travellers ask
The room matches the category but looks older than the photos. Can I complain?
Should I accept an upgrade instead?
What if the resort says the agent booked the wrong category?
