Maldivian breakfast dishes and how they compare with Malaysian food

Your guesthouse says breakfast is included, and you want to know what will be on the table and whether you will like it.

Last reviewed 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

The classic Maldivian breakfast is mas huni (smoked tuna with grated coconut, onion, chilli and lime) scooped up with roshi, a thin flatbread, and washed down with hot tea. Malaysians usually find it close to roti canai with sambal ikan bilis, only lighter and fresher. Many guesthouses serve it alongside eggs, toast and fruit, so ask whether breakfast is Maldivian, continental or both.

What a Maldivian breakfast looks like

A traditional breakfast is mas huni with roshi and a pot of hot tea. Mas huni is smoked tuna mixed by hand with grated coconut, onion, chilli and lime.

Roshi is a thin, round flatbread, used to scoop up the mas huni. This page sits in the food and everyday life hub, next to the wider guide on what to eat in the Maldives.

How each dish is eaten

Mas huni is served cold or at room temperature. Tear a piece of roshi, pinch some mas huni into it and eat it with your fingers, much as you would roti with sambal.

Kulhimas and other fish curries are heavier. They appear more in homes and local cafes than in guesthouse breakfast plates aimed at visitors.

Bajiya and gulha are deep fried and sold at local tea shops. They are often eaten with tea in the afternoon, but some cafes have them in the morning too.

Where you will find each dish

Guesthouses on local islands are the easiest place to try mas huni, because many offer it as the default breakfast. Small local cafes on busier islands also serve it, often with tea and short eats.

Resort buffets vary. Some include a small Maldivian section; others focus on international food, so ask if you want to try local dishes.

In Male and Hulhumale, local tea shops are the place for hedhikaa snacks. A transit night is a good chance to try them.

How breakfast works at guesthouses and resorts

On local islands, many guesthouses include breakfast in the room rate. Some serve a set Maldivian breakfast, others a continental plate of eggs, toast and fruit, and some offer both.

Listings for Dhigurah guesthouses, for example, describe mas huni and fresh fruit alongside continental choices. Ask your host what is served before you pay.

Resorts usually run a buffet with egg stations, pastries, Asian dishes and fruit. Some include a Maldivian corner with mas huni and roshi.

A breakfast checklist for your booking

Send these questions to your guesthouse when you book.

  1. Is breakfast included in the rate, and for how many guests?
  2. Is it Maldivian, continental or a choice?
  3. What time does it start, and can you get an early one for boat days?
  4. Can the kitchen make a mild version for children?
  5. Can it cater for vegetarian or allergy needs?

Tips for Malaysian tastes

If you want more heat, ask for extra chilli or a little rihaakuru, a rich fish paste. If you prefer milder food, ask for mas huni without chilli.

Fresh fruit such as papaya and banana is common, especially on farming islands like Thoddoo. For spice expectations beyond breakfast, read whether Malaysian-style spicy food is available.

Halal and dietary notes

On local islands, breakfast is halal by default, since the islands are Muslim communities and pork is not allowed in. At resorts, ask how meat at the buffet is sourced and prepared.

Mas huni contains fish and coconut, so it does not suit people with fish allergies or vegetarians. Eggs, roshi, toast and fruit are the usual alternatives. Write any allergy down and send it to your host before arrival.

Who will enjoy it most

Travellers who like roti canai, sambal and fish dishes usually take to Maldivian breakfast quickly. Families with fussy children should pick a guesthouse that also offers eggs and toast.

Vegetarians will find mas huni off the menu, since it is fish based. See where to find vegetarian food on Maldives islands for alternatives.

Questions travellers ask

Is mas huni eaten every day in the Maldives?
It is described as the most popular breakfast dish in the country, and many families eat it often. Guesthouses that serve a Maldivian breakfast usually include it. If you stay a week, expect to see it several times, with variations such as fresh tuna instead of smoked or extra lime.
Do guesthouses serve breakfast early enough for morning boats?
Many guesthouses serve breakfast from about 07:00 or 07:30, but morning airport boats can leave earlier. Ask the evening before whether a packed breakfast or early tea is possible. Most hosts are used to guests catching early boats and can prepare something simple.
Can children eat a Maldivian breakfast?
Yes, with some care. Mas huni can be made without chilli, and roshi, eggs, toast, fruit and juice are easy for children. Ask the kitchen to keep a portion unspiced, and bring a familiar cereal from Malaysia if your child is a fussy eater.
Is there coffee?
Yes. Tea is the traditional breakfast drink, but instant coffee is common at guesthouses and many cafes and resorts serve espresso. If you rely on a particular kopi or sachet, packing a few from Malaysia is simple.
