The short answer
Dhigurah has fewer places to eat than Maafushi, but enough for a week if you plan. Breakfast at your guesthouse, then a rotation of local cafes and guesthouse restaurants for lunch and dinner.
People usually stay longer here for whale shark chances in South Ari, so food variety matters more. This page sits in the food and everyday life hub, and the Dhigurah travel guide covers the island.
What is on the island
Guesthouse listings describe breakfast as included, often with mas huni and fresh fruit next to continental choices. Several guesthouses run restaurants, with one advertising Chinese, Indian and Italian dishes plus halal and vegetarian options.
Small local cafes serve Maldivian curries, grilled fish, fried rice and snacks. Drinks are juices, mocktails, soft drinks, tea and coffee, because alcohol is not sold on local islands.
Guest feedback suggests some guesthouse kitchens do not serve every meal every day. Confirm before you rely on one.
Worked food budget for two, six nights
This example assumes breakfast is included and you eat lunch and dinner out. A Dhigurah guesthouse guide suggests USD 10 to 20 per meal at local cafes.
- Low: USD 10 × 2 meals × 2 people × 6 days = USD 240, about RM982 at RM4.09.
- High: USD 20 × 2 meals × 2 people × 6 days = USD 480, about RM1,963.
- Snacks, water and coffees: allow about USD 5 per person per day, so USD 60, about RM245.
So a couple should budget roughly RM1,230 to RM2,210 for six days of food beyond breakfast. Prices are a planning guide, not quotes. Add your own numbers to the trip cost calculator.
Meal plan or eat out? A decision rule
- Three nights or fewer: breakfast only, eat out.
- Four to six nights: breakfast only, but book one or two guesthouse dinners for variety.
- Seven nights or more, or travelling with small children: ask about half board, and compare its price with the cafe budget above.
- Strict dietary needs: choose a guesthouse with its own restaurant and agree meals in writing.
Keeping a long stay interesting
Rotate between cafes rather than settling on one. Ask your host about a beach barbecue night, which some guesthouses arrange for an extra charge.
Try local snacks at tea time, and see our guide to Maldivian breakfast dishes for what to order. Pack a few sealed comfort foods from Malaysia, such as sambal sachets or instant noodles without pork.
Excursion days and Fridays
Whale shark trips can take a good part of the day. Eat breakfast first, bring water and a snack, and ask whether the trip includes lunch.
On Fridays, some cafes close around midday for prayers. Plan lunch earlier or have it at your guesthouse.
Families and older travellers
Families should confirm that a guesthouse kitchen can make plain food such as rice, eggs, noodles or pasta for children every day. On a long stay, a reliable kitchen at home base matters more than cafe choice.
Older travellers may prefer a guesthouse with its own restaurant, so dinner is a few steps away rather than a walk along sandy lanes after dark.
Money and shops
Carry small US dollar notes or rufiyaa, since small cafes may prefer cash. Withdraw at Velana airport before the boat, and ask your guesthouse about card payment.
Local shops stock basics only. Bring medicines, baby food and specific snacks from home.
Who this suits
Dhigurah suits couples, divers and snorkellers happy with simple, fresh food and a slower pace. Food lovers who want a new restaurant every night may prefer Maafushi, as covered in eating on Maafushi.
