Moving between Thoddoo and Rasdhoo

You want to pair farm-and-beach Thoddoo with diving hub Rasdhoo and need to know how the two islands connect.

Quick answer

Thoddoo and Rasdhoo are about an hour apart by public ferry, which older guides describe as running only three days a week in each direction. No scheduled speedboat between them was found, so the alternatives are a private charter through your guesthouse or two shared speedboats via Male. Confirm ferry days with both guesthouses before fixing your nights.

How do you get between Thoddoo and Rasdhoo?

The cheapest way is the public ferry, which older guides describe as running about three days a week in each direction and taking about 1 hour 15 minutes. No scheduled speedboat between the two islands was found in our search on 12 Oct 2026.

Your other choices are a private charter or two shared speedboats via Male. Each has a clear trade-off in cost and time. This page belongs to the transfers and travel logistics hub.

Ferry details come from older travel guides and should be treated as patterns, not a timetable. Ferry days on this route have been reported differently by different guides, which is why confirming locally matters.

A decision rule

Use this rule once you know the ferry days from your guesthouses.

  • If a ferry day falls on a middle day of your trip, take the ferry.
  • If not, and you are four or more people, ask for a charter quote and split it.
  • If you are one or two people with no ferry day, compare the charter quote with two speedboat fares via Male.
  • Never plan this move on a Friday or on the day before your flight home.

Why Thoddoo and Rasdhoo pair well

Thoddoo is known for farms, fresh fruit and a long bikini beach. Rasdhoo is the atoll capital, with more dive centres and a well-known sandbank nearby.

Together they give a mix of quiet beach days and active diving days. Both are Muslim local islands with halal food by default and no alcohol.

Worked example: a 6D5N trip for four friends

Four friends land on the morning AirAsia flight at about 09:50. They take a shared speedboat to Thoddoo, if the day's service fits, and spend three nights there.

On day four, their guesthouses confirm no ferry runs that day. They ask for a charter quote, split it four ways, and move to Rasdhoo before lunch.

They dive on days four and five, keeping the last 24 hours before the flight dive-free. On day six they take the morning shared speedboat from Rasdhoo to the airport.

Green Tax at small guesthouses is USD 6 per guest per night, so five nights for four people adds USD 120, about RM491 at RM4.09 per USD.

Planning checklist

  1. Ask both guesthouses which days the ferry runs in your direction, and the departure jetty.
  2. Ask the guesthouse you are leaving for a charter quote as a fallback.
  3. Check Friday and public holiday changes.
  4. Reconfirm the evening before, especially in the southwest monsoon.
  5. Withdraw cash in Male before you leave, as facilities on small islands are limited.

Weather and comfort on the crossing

The crossing is open water between two parts of Alif Alif atoll. In the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, it can be choppy and boats may be delayed.

If anyone in your group gets seasick, take medication before boarding and sit near the back of the boat. The seasickness guide for boat transfers has a fuller list.

Keep a dry bag for phones and passports, as spray is common on small boats.

Who this route suits

This pairing suits divers, friend groups and couples who want two contrasting islands. Older travellers do fine on the ferry if bags are light and the sea is calm.

Families with toddlers may prefer one island, or the charter for a shorter crossing. To add Ukulhas, read moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas. If a boat is cancelled, see what to do if the last scheduled island boat is cancelled, and budget with the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Why not just go through Male?
You can, and it is often the most reliable backup. Both islands have shared speedboats to the Male area, but they tend to arrive in the morning and leave Male in the afternoon. Routing via Male usually means waiting several hours or staying a night in Hulhumale, and paying two speedboat fares.
How much does a private charter cost?
We found no reliable published price for a Thoddoo to Rasdhoo charter. Charters are priced per boat, so the cost per person falls as the group grows. Ask both guesthouses for a quote at the same time, state the number of people and bags, and confirm whether the price is one way.
Is Thoddoo halal-friendly?
Thoddoo is a Muslim local island, so alcohol is not served and food is generally halal by default. It is known for farms and fresh fruit such as watermelon and papaya. Confirm meal arrangements with your guesthouse, and dress modestly in the village outside the bikini beach.
Which island suits divers better?
Rasdhoo has more dive centres and is close to well-known Ari atoll dive sites. Thoddoo suits divers too, but has fewer operators. Many divers put most of their dives on the Rasdhoo nights and use Thoddoo for beach and snorkelling days. Remember not to dive in the 24 hours before your flight.
