Airport transfers

Maldives airport transfers explained: speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight

Your island is chosen partly by how you get there, so the transfer deserves a decision of its own.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Your island's distance from Velana airport decides the transfer. Islands in North and South Male atolls use a speedboat, typically 20 to 75 minutes. Further atolls use a seaplane (daylight only) or a domestic flight plus a boat. The resort or guesthouse arranges it, and its cost (about USD 100 to 820 per adult return) often matters as much as the room rate.

Which transfer will my island need?

Distance from the airport decides it, not your preference. Every international flight from Malaysia lands at Velana International Airport on Hulhule island, next to Male, and each island is reached from there.

The table below covers most stays. It sits under our transfers and travel logistics hub, which collects every transfer page in one place.

How does the arrival actually work?

You clear immigration, collect bags and look for your resort's representative in arrivals. From there the three paths split.

Speedboat guests walk to the jetty just outside the terminal. Seaplane guests ride a shuttle to the seaplane terminal and may wait in a lounge. Domestic flight guests check in again at the domestic terminal, where the baggage allowance is usually tighter than on the international flight.

Allow about an hour from landing to being ready at your transfer. Families and older travellers should allow more.

Which Malaysian flights connect the same day?

The morning nonstops from Kuala Lumpur connect to all three transfer types. In the October 2026 sample schedule, AirAsia landed about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25 Maldives time.

Batik Air's evening flight landed about 21:55. That is too late for any seaplane, which needs you on the ground by about 15:30, and usually too late for a domestic flight connection.

A late arrival still works for many speedboat resorts and for a night in Hulhumale. Our flight arrival and last transfer planner checks your landing time against each type.

A worked example: how the transfer changes the trip total

Take a couple comparing two resorts with similar room rates. The first is a speedboat resort with a transfer at about USD 200 per adult return. The second is a seaplane resort at about USD 650 per adult return.

Item (2 adults)Speedboat resortSeaplane resort
Transfer per adult returnUSD 200USD 650
Transfer for twoUSD 400USD 1,300
In ringgit at RM4.09 per USDAbout RM1,636About RM5,317

The difference is about RM3,680 for the same nights, before any tax added to the transfer. That money could buy one or two extra nights at many mid-range resorts. Run your own figures in the trip cost calculator.

Who suits each transfer best?

Speedboats suit short trips, late arrivals, budget-minded couples and families who want the least planning risk. The trade-off is a bumpier ride on windy days, which matters for anyone prone to seasickness.

Seaplanes suit honeymooners and anyone who wants the view and a more remote resort. They suit travellers less well when flights land late, luggage is heavy or the trip is only three nights.

Domestic flights suit divers heading to distant atolls and anyone who prefers a normal aircraft to a small seaplane. Expect a second check-in and a tighter bag limit.

What to check before you pay a deposit

Ask these questions of any resort or guesthouse before money changes hands:

  • Which transfer type, and is it shared or private?
  • The price per adult, child and infant, return, and whether tax is included.
  • The latest landing time that still connects on your arrival day.
  • What happens if your flight lands late: a Hulhumale night, a later boat, or a charge.
  • The baggage allowance per person, especially for seaplanes and domestic flights.
  • The departure-day pickup time compared with your flight home.

Written answers to these six points prevent most first-day problems. Keep them with your booking confirmation.

Questions travellers ask

Can I arrange my own transfer separately from the resort?
For resorts, almost never in practice. Resorts sell the transfer as part of the stay because they schedule boats and seaplane seats around their guest list. Trans Maldivian says resort transfers are booked through the resort, travel agent or tour operator. Guesthouses on local islands are more flexible, since public ferries and shared speedboats also run there.
Is the transfer price per person or per room?
Most resorts charge per person, return, with a lower rate for children aged 2 to 11 and infants often free. Taxes are sometimes added on top of the quoted transfer price. Ask whether Tourism GST is already included before you compare two resorts, because one may quote net and the other gross.
Where do I meet the transfer at Velana?
After immigration and baggage, resort representatives wait in the arrivals hall, usually holding a sign or at a resort counter. Seaplane guests are then taken by shuttle to the seaplane terminal on the other side of the airport island. Domestic flight guests go to the domestic terminal with their transfer host.
Do I tip transfer crew?
Tipping is not required, and a 10% service charge is usually already built into resort bills. Many travellers give a small amount to the boat crew or porters who handle heavy bags. Keep a few US dollar notes in small denominations for this if you want to.
