What changes when the ringgit weakens before your Maldives holiday

Your Maldives trip is months away, the ringgit is moving, and you want to know how much of your budget is exposed.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Only the parts of your trip priced in US dollars and not yet paid get dearer when the ringgit weakens. That usually means direct resort bookings, transfers, resort extras and anything settled on your final bill. Every 10 sen move per dollar changes a USD 3,000 resort bill by RM300. Ringgit packages from Malaysian agencies and flights booked in RM stay fixed once paid in full.

The short answer: only unpaid dollar costs move

A weaker ringgit makes US dollar prices cost more ringgit. Anything you have already paid, or that is priced and paid in ringgit, does not change.

Most Maldives resorts, transfers and taxes are priced in US dollars. So the question is how much of your trip is still in dollars and still unpaid. For the wider cost picture, see the Budget and Real Cost hub.

Bank Negara Malaysia showed USD/MYR at 4.0830 on 12 October 2026. This site plans with RM4.09 per USD.

How much a weaker ringgit adds

Each 10 sen per dollar adds RM100 for every USD 1,000 you still have to pay. The table shows common bill sizes.

Unpaid USD amountAt RM4.09At RM4.20At RM4.35At RM4.50
USD 1,000 (transfers and extras for two)RM4,090RM4,200RM4,350RM4,500
USD 3,000 (four-night beach villa with taxes)RM12,270RM12,600RM13,050RM13,500
USD 5,000 (four-night overwater stay for two)RM20,450RM21,000RM21,750RM22,500

A fall from RM4.09 to RM4.35, a 6% move, adds about RM780 to a USD 3,000 bill. These rates are examples for planning, not a forecast.

Which trip costs are exposed

Usually priced in US dollars:

  • Resort room rates booked directly or through international hotel sites.
  • Seaplane, speedboat and domestic flight transfers, typically USD 100 to 820 per person return.
  • Green Tax, USD 12 per guest per night at resorts.
  • Resort extras on the final bill: meals, drinks, spa, diving, excursions.

Usually priced in ringgit:

  • Packages from Malaysian travel agencies, quoted per person in RM.
  • Flights from KUL booked on AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines or Batik Air in RM.

A ringgit package can still be repriced before you pay in full if the agency's terms allow. Ask whether the price is fixed at deposit or only at final payment.

What to fix early, and what to leave

A simple rule: fix the large items when the price suits your budget, and accept rate risk only on small extras.

  1. Book flights in RM once dates are firm. Fares move for other reasons too.
  2. Choose a ringgit package if you want the whole ground cost fixed. Check the package price evidence for current examples.
  3. For a direct USD booking, consider paying the balance once the cancellation terms suit you. Our page on USD versus MYR bookings and card fees shows how card conversion adds a further layer.
  4. Keep a buffer of about 5% of the unpaid dollar amount for the resort bill and extras.

A worked example for a couple

A couple has paid RM2,310 for two return flights and a USD 1,500 deposit on a resort. The balance of USD 3,000, plus about USD 1,000 for the seaplane and extras, is due on arrival.

At RM4.09, the unpaid USD 4,000 is RM16,360. If the ringgit weakens to RM4.35 by travel time, it becomes RM17,400, about RM1,040 more. The flights and deposit do not change.

Had they chosen a ringgit package paid in full, only the resort extras would have moved.

The same couple could also have paid the USD 3,000 balance early. At RM4.09 that fixes RM12,270, leaving only about USD 1,000 exposed, so a move to RM4.35 would cost them about RM260 instead of RM1,040.

That trade-off is the heart of this decision. Early payment buys certainty but ties up money under the resort's cancellation terms, so check those first.

Who should watch the rate closely

Couples and families booking resorts directly in US dollars, and anyone planning months ahead for a honeymoon or school holiday trip. Travellers on fully paid ringgit packages can relax about most of it.

Questions travellers ask

Should I pay my resort balance early to beat the exchange rate?
Only if the terms allow it and you are comfortable with the cancellation rules. Paying early fixes the ringgit cost, but it also moves your money out of reach if plans change. Compare the deposit and cancellation deadlines before you decide, because a refund later may come back at a different rate.
Does the ringgit affect Green Tax?
Yes, if you pay it in dollars. Green Tax is set in US dollars, USD 12 per guest per night at resorts and USD 6 at smaller guesthouses on inhabited islands. If it is already inside a ringgit package you have paid for, the rate no longer matters for that part.
Is the rufiyaa relevant for Malaysian travellers?
Rarely for resort stays, which bill in US dollars. On local islands, small cafes and shops may price in rufiyaa, and the rufiyaa is managed against the dollar. In practice your exposure is still mostly to the ringgit against the dollar.
Can a strengthening ringgit help me?
Yes, the same maths works in your favour. If you leave USD payments until later and the ringgit strengthens, the bill falls. That is the gamble, since keeping costs unpaid can help or hurt, so many travellers fix the big items and leave only small extras to chance.
