What RM12,000 per person really buys

It buys a premium resort, not just any resort. At this level you choose between a well-known brand on a package, or a self-built five-star stay with a seaplane arrival.

What it does not quite buy is four room-only overwater nights plus a seaplane plus meals. That combination is where RM12,000 runs out. For the step below, see what RM8,000 per person buys, and the Budget and Real Cost hub for every tier.

All figures are per person, two sharing one room, departing KUL, at RM4.09 per USD. Prices were checked on 11 and 12 October 2026 and will change.

Three costed four-night routes

Route A uses AF Travel's published rates: RM7,936 for 15 April to 30 September 2027 and up to RM8,956 for other dates. The package lists full board, non-alcoholic drinks, Green Tax and government tax, but the print page does not state the transfer, so ask.

The airport night is our example: a USD 100 inhabited-island room, half share with service and GST (USD 64.35), plus USD 6 Green Tax, about RM288 per person.

How the self-built numbers work

Routes B and C use market bands, not quotes. Here is route B, so you can check it.

• Room: USD 500 x 1.287 (10% service then 17% GST) = USD 643.50 a night.
• Four nights: USD 2,574, plus Green Tax of USD 12 x 2 guests x 4 nights = USD 96.
• Per room USD 2,670, per person USD 1,335, about RM5,460.
• Seaplane: USD 600 return, the middle of the USD 400 to 820 range, about RM2,454.

Route C swaps the room for USD 800, the bottom of the high-end overwater band. That alone is USD 2,107 per person, about RM8,618, before a single meal.

The decision rule for RM12,000

Subtract your flight and transfer first, then look at rooms. With a RM1,155 fare and a USD 600 seaplane, about RM8,400 per person is left for the room, taxes and food.

A rough guide from that remainder:

• Room rate up to about USD 500 a night: four nights plus a meal plan usually fits.
• USD 500 to 800 a night: fits only with breakfast only, or a split stay.
• Over USD 800 a night: take a package that bundles meals and transfer, or cut a night.

Where the buffer goes

Routes A and B leave roughly RM1,600 to RM2,900 per person. Each of these can take a real share of it.

• Meals on route B. Isolated resorts set their own menu prices, so ask for half board or full board pricing before you choose.
• The morning flight. Malaysia Airlines was about RM1,028 to RM1,049 one way in our snapshot, which adds roughly RM900 return over the cheapest fare.
• Festive dinners and supplements if you travel in late December.
• Spa, diving and private excursions, which packages rarely include.

Who RM12,000 suits best

It suits honeymooners who want a brand-name resort, anniversary couples and families where child rates stretch the adult budget. It also suits travellers who want one or two overwater nights without a stretch.
