What makes a Maldives trip expensive?

The Maldives has a reputation for being costly, and you want to know which parts of the bill are actually doing it.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Four things drive most of the cost. The room type (a guesthouse at about USD 60 to 180 a night versus a resort villa at USD 300 to 1,100 or more), the transfer (a USD 25 speedboat seat versus a USD 400 to 820 seaplane), the meal plan on an island with no other restaurants, and about 28.7% in service charge and tax on top of most rates. Flights from Kuala Lumpur are often the smaller part of a resort trip.

Key facts

  • Service charge plus TGST

    About 28.7%

    10% service then 17% TGST

  • Green Tax at resorts

    USD 12

    Per guest per night

  • Shared seaplane

    USD 400 to 820

    Per adult return

The short answer

A Maldives trip is expensive mainly because of the island you sleep on. On a private resort island, the room, the transfer and every meal come from one seller, priced in US dollars, with about 28.7% in service charge and tax on top.

On an inhabited local island, the same nights can cost a fraction of that. This page, part of our budget and real cost hub, breaks down each driver so you can see where your ringgit goes.

Driver 1: the room and the island type

Published benchmarks for 2026 put a local island guesthouse double at about USD 60 to 180 a night before tax. A four-star resort beach villa sits at about USD 300 to 550, a five-star beach villa at USD 500 to 1,100, and a standard five-star overwater villa at USD 800 to 1,800.

That spread is the single biggest reason two Maldives trips of the same length can differ by RM10,000 or more. If the water villa is the question, read whether you need a water villa at all.

Driver 2: the transfer

Distance from the airport sets the transfer mode, and the mode sets the price. Approximate return fares per adult:

TransferTypical priceBasis
Shared speedboat to MaafushiUSD 25 one wayPer person, operator price
Shared speedboat to resorts near MaleUSD 100 to 370 returnPer person
Domestic flight plus speedboatUSD 350 to 520 returnPer adult
Shared seaplaneUSD 400 to 820 returnPer adult

For two adults, a seaplane can add RM3,300 to RM6,700 to the trip before you have slept a night. Children aged 2 to 11 typically pay 30% to 40% less.

Driver 3: taxes and service charge

Most hotels and resorts add a 10% service charge, then 17% Tourism GST on the service-charged amount. The result is about 28.7% on top of a quoted room rate (1.10 x 1.17 = 1.287).

Green Tax comes on top: USD 12 per guest per night at resorts and larger properties, or USD 6 at guesthouses on inhabited islands with 50 rooms or fewer. Under-2s are exempt.

Driver 4: meals on a private island

On a resort island there is nowhere else to eat. Breakfast-only rates look cheap until you add two meals a day for two people at resort prices.

On a local island you can eat at local cafes, so a breakfast-only rate works well. Alcohol is only sold on resorts, liveaboards and licensed facilities, which also shifts the drinks budget.

Worked example: three nights for two, three ways

These estimates use the benchmark ranges above at a single illustrative rate, RM 4.09 per USD, and the cheapest KUL return fare seen on 11 October 2026 (about RM 1,155 per person). Meals and activities are excluded so the comparison stays clean.

Driver 5: dates and the exchange rate

Malaysian school holidays and the December to April dry season push up both fares from Kuala Lumpur and resort rates. A weaker ringgit raises every USD-priced line at the same time.

Read when Malaysians should book for timing, and why the cheapest package might cost more overall before you compare offers.

Smaller costs that add up

Several smaller lines sit outside most headline prices. Each is modest alone, but together they can add a few thousand ringgit for a couple.

  • Seaplane excess baggage: Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage, then charges USD 5 per kg plus taxes.
  • Airport Development Fee: USD 50 per foreign economy passenger departing Male, usually collected in the air ticket, so check it is in your fare.
  • Excursions: snorkel trips, sandbank visits and dolphin cruises are priced per person at resorts.
  • Drinks: on breakfast or half board, every soft drink and coffee outside meal times is billed at resort prices.
  • An unplanned hotel night: an evening arrival for a seaplane resort means a night near the airport first.

None of these is a reason to avoid the Maldives. They are reasons to ask for a quote that lists them, so the total you plan for is the total you pay.

Where to save and where not to

Saving on the room by staying on a local island cuts the most, and suits budget travellers, friend groups and divers who spend days on boats. Choosing a speedboat resort near Male instead of a seaplane resort saves the second most.

Honeymooners and older travellers often find the transfer and meal plan are worth paying for, because they buy ease. Our page on where to spend and where to save goes deeper. Benchmarks here were checked in October 2026 and actual quotes will differ.

Questions travellers ask

Why are Maldives prices quoted in US dollars?
Resorts and most tourist businesses price in US dollars, so a ringgit quote is a conversion made on a particular day. If the ringgit weakens between quote and payment, a USD-based price rises in ringgit terms. Ask whether a Malaysian package price is fixed in ringgit at the time you pay the deposit.
Is all-inclusive always the most expensive meal plan?
It costs most upfront, but on a private resort island every meal and drink is bought from the resort, so a cheaper plan can end up costing more once you add lunches and drinks at resort prices. Whether all-inclusive pays off depends on how much you eat and drink. Our meal plan comparisons work through the break-even.
Do children make a Maldives trip much more expensive?
Children add Green Tax from age two, transfer fares (often 30% to 40% below the adult rate), meals and sometimes a larger villa. Under-2s are exempt from Green Tax. The villa category is often the hidden cost, because a family of four may not fit the cheapest room.
Are older Green Tax figures still used in some quotes?
Some old blog posts and price lists show Green Tax at USD 6 for resorts, which was the rate before 2025. Since 1 January 2025 it is USD 12 at resorts and larger properties. If a quote shows the old figure, ask the seller to confirm which rate it uses.
