Yes, you can, and many Malaysians do. Registered guesthouses on inhabited islands, city hotels and liveaboard boats all let you see the Maldives without paying resort rates.
This page compares the options and the rules that come with them. It sits in the Start Here hub; for a full side-by-side with resorts, see the resort versus local island comparison.
What are the alternatives to a resort?
There are three main options. Visit Maldives describes guesthouses and boutique hotels on local islands as a lower-cost way to see island life and Maldivian culture.
| Option | Where | Typical cost basis | Best for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local-island guesthouse | Inhabited islands such as Maafushi | USD 60 to 180 per double per night, before tax | Budget travellers, families, groups | No alcohol, dress rules |
| City hotel | Male or Hulhumale | Varies; check registered hotels | Late arrivals, short stopovers | Little beach time |
| Liveaboard | Boat touring several atolls | Priced per cabin per trip | Divers | Compact cabins, early starts |
How much cheaper is a guesthouse?
Considerably. Taking a USD 100 guesthouse double for two adults, add about 28.7% for service charge and Tourism GST, giving USD 128.70, then Green Tax of USD 6 each, giving USD 140.70 a night.
That is about RM 575 a night for the couple at RM 4.09 per US dollar. A four-star resort villa at USD 400 works out at about USD 538.80, roughly RM 2,204 a night, on the same basis.
Malaysian agencies also sell guesthouse packages. HolidayGoGoGo listed a 4D3N Arena Beach Maafushi package at RM 2,319 per adult twin share, with speedboat, most meals and trips, valid to 31 October 2026 and flights excluded.
Which rules apply on a local island?
Local islands are Muslim communities, and the rules reflect that. Cover shoulders and knees in public, and wear swimwear only on designated bikini beaches.
Alcohol is not sold on inhabited islands, and you cannot bring it into the country, including duty-free. Pork cannot be brought in either.
On Fridays many shops close around midday for prayers, and some public ferries do not run. Plan arrival and departure days with this in mind.
How do you get to a local island?
By public ferry, shared speedboat or domestic flight. Public ferries are very cheap, roughly USD 2 to 3 per person, but slow and infrequent; the Male to Maafushi ferry takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours.
A shared airport speedboat to Maafushi is listed at USD 25 per person one way and must be booked in advance. Your guesthouse can usually arrange it.
For islands in distant atolls, a domestic flight plus a speedboat is common. The airport transfers guide explains each mode.
What can you do without a resort?
Most of what resort guests do. Guesthouses sell snorkel trips, sandbank picnics, dolphin cruises and fishing, and many local islands have dive centres.
Some guesthouses also arrange resort day visits for guests who want a pool, a bar or a long lunch. Prices and policies vary, so confirm what is included.
What is a stay in Male or Hulhumale like?
Male is the compact, busy capital, next to the airport island. It has mosques, markets and a fish market, and it suits a short visit rather than a beach holiday.
Hulhumale is a newer island linked to the airport, popular for a night before or after a flight. It is a practical base if you land on the evening Batik Air flight at about 21:55.
Many travellers spend one night here and move to a local island or resort the next morning, when transfers and daylight are available.
What should you pack for a guesthouse stay?
Pack for both the bikini beach and the village. Bring light clothing that covers shoulders and knees for walking around the island, plus swimwear for designated beaches and boat trips.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag and cash in US dollars for small purchases and excursions. Mains electricity is 230 V with UK-style three-pin sockets, the same as in Malaysia.
Who should still choose a resort?
A resort is the better fit if alcohol, total privacy or a villa on the water matter to you. Families with toddlers may also prefer a resort pool and kids club.
Travellers who dislike planning transfers themselves may find a resort easier, since one property arranges everything. A split stay gives a taste of both.
For the next step, read the local islands beginner guide or the Maafushi island guide.
