Is the Maldives only for honeymooners?

Every photo shows a couple on a villa deck, and you are wondering whether the Maldives will work for your group.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

No. Honeymooners are the best-known visitors, but the Maldives also suits families with water-confident children, friend groups on local islands, solo travellers, divers, snorkellers and retirees who want quiet. What changes is the island you choose. Adults-only resorts and small villa-only islands suit couples, while family resorts and inhabited local islands suit almost everyone else.

Key facts

  • Green Tax

    Under-2s exempt

  • Child transfer fares

  • Local-island package

From about RM 2,000 pp, 4D3N, no flights

No, the Maldives is not only for honeymooners. It is the best-known honeymoon destination for Malaysians, but families, friend groups, solo travellers, divers and retirees visit too.

The trick is matching the island to the group. This page shows which kind of stay fits each traveller type, as part of the Start Here hub.

Why does the Maldives look like a honeymoon-only destination?

Because resort marketing centres on villas built for two. Overwater villas, private pools and sunset dinners photograph well and sell well to couples.

The country offers more than that. Visit Maldives lists resorts, hotels, guesthouses and liveaboards, and guesthouses on inhabited islands draw a very different crowd from a villa-only resort.

Which stay suits which traveller?

This table is the core of the page. Find your group, then check the fit and the main thing to confirm before booking.

How families can make it work

Families do well at resorts with a kids club, a pool and a shallow lagoon. Children under 2 are exempt from Green Tax, and children aged 2 to 11 typically pay around 30% to 40% less than adults for resort transfers.

Malaysian agencies sell family-oriented packages. HolidayGoGoGo listed a 4D3N Adaaran Club Rannalhi water bungalow family package from RM 4,989 per adult twin share for some 2026 months, with validity ending 31 October 2026 and flights excluded.

Infants have no baggage allowance on Trans Maldivian seaplanes, so plan cot and stroller needs with the resort. Our family planning guide covers this in detail.

How friend groups and solo travellers can make it work

Local islands suit groups and solo travellers best. Guesthouse doubles typically cost USD 60 to 180 a night before tax, and costs drop when shared.

Agencies advertise Maafushi land packages from about RM 2,000 per person for 4D3N, flights excluded. Groups that want a drink can add a resort day trip or a split stay.

Solo travellers pay close to the double rate at resorts, so a guesthouse usually gives better value. Read whether solo Maldives travel is worthwhile for more.

How divers and active travellers can make it work

Divers should choose by season and atoll rather than by villa. Whale sharks in South Ari are seen year-round, and Hanifaru Bay manta gatherings fall roughly June to November.

Surfers, fishers and water sports fans also visit. Seaplanes cannot carry surfboards on scheduled flights, so surf trips need a boat or charter transfer.

How older travellers can make it work

The short flight from KLIA and a 3-hour time difference suit many older travellers. A resort near Male by speedboat avoids early seaplane check-ins.

Ask about buggy service, jetty steps, beach access and medical facilities. Quiet resorts with good dining suit relaxed stays of four or five nights.

What does a non-honeymoon trip cost?

Budgets vary widely by group type, and the cheapest options suit groups and solo travellers. The figures below use dated agency listings and room bands, with flights excluded unless stated.

A friend group sharing a local-island guesthouse can start from about RM 2,000 per person for a 4D3N land package. A family resort package with meals and transfers started from RM 4,989 per adult twin share in some 2026 months.

Add a KLIA return from about RM 1,155 per person (Traveloka snapshot, 11 October 2026). Children's flight and transfer fares change the total for families, so price each traveller separately.

Mixed groups: one trip, different wants

Many groups combine a honeymoon couple, parents and friends, or a couple where one person wants adventure and the other rest. A resort with several restaurants and an activity centre handles mixed wants well.

A split stay is another answer. Start on a local island for excursions and village life, then finish at a resort for quiet and comfort.

When it really is a couples' trip

Some resorts are adults-only, and some villa categories are designed for two. If you want romance and no children around, filter for these.

Questions travellers ask

Are there adults-only resorts in the Maldives?
Yes, several resorts are adults-only or set a minimum age, and some have adults-only areas within a family resort. Ages and policies differ by property, so check the official resort website before booking. If you are travelling as a couple and want quiet, this is worth filtering for.
Is the Maldives good for a solo traveller?
It can be, especially on a local island where guesthouses run group excursions and there are cafes and other travellers. Resort rooms are priced per villa, so solo travellers pay close to the double rate. Our solo travel page covers budgets and safety in detail.
Can a big family group or company trip go to the Maldives?
Yes. Larger groups often use a local island with several guesthouses, a resort with interconnecting rooms, or a liveaboard charter. Transfers for groups need early planning, and seaplane baggage limits apply to every traveller.
Do friend groups find the Maldives boring?
Groups who want nightlife may, since alcohol is limited to resorts and the islands are small. Groups who enjoy snorkelling, sandbank trips, fishing and water sports usually find plenty to do, especially on a local island with several operators.
