Common Maldives booking mistakes Malaysians make

You have the dates and a budget, and you want to avoid the errors that cost other travellers a night or a few thousand ringgit.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

The costliest mistakes are booking a cheap evening flight before checking the resort transfer, comparing a ground package with a complete trip, missing the roughly 28.7% service and tax plus Green Tax on rates quoted without them, and assuming a meal plan covers everything. Others include using old tax figures, booking a room too small for the family, and forgetting the free IMUGA declaration.

Key facts

  • Seaplane cut-off

    Land by about 15:30

  • Green Tax at resorts

    USD 12 since 1 Jan 2025

    Per guest per night

  • TGST

    17% since 1 Jul 2025

The pattern behind most mistakes

Most Maldives booking mistakes happen when one piece of the trip is booked without checking the others. The flight, the transfer, the room and the meal plan depend on each other more than on a typical Asian beach holiday.

This page is part of our Start Here hub. Each mistake below has a likely cost and a simple fix.

Mistakes 1 and 8: transfer and timing

Seaplanes fly from sunrise to sunset only. From Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia lands about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25, both in time. Batik Air lands about 21:55, too late for any seaplane that day.

Seaplane baggage is limited to 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage on Trans Maldivian, with excess at USD 5 per kg. Families with a pram and festive outfits go over this more often than they expect.

Mistakes 2, 3, 4 and 5: price basis

Malaysian packages come in two forms: ground packages without flights, usually 3 nights, and complete trips with flights, often 4 nights. Comparing one with the other is the most common pricing error.

Tax is the next trap. A 10% service charge followed by 17% Tourism GST adds about 28.7%, and Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night at resorts since 1 January 2025 (USD 6 at small guesthouses). Older blogs still show USD 6 for resorts and 16% GST.

Then check per person versus per room. Our guide to telling whether a quote is per room or per person walks through the wording.

Mistakes 6 and 7: meals and room size

On a private resort island every meal comes from the resort, so a breakfast-only rate can cost more in the end. On a local island the opposite is true, since local cafes are cheap.

For families, the cheapest villa may only sleep two adults and one child. Give exact child ages at the start, because ages decide both villa occupancy and Green Tax (under-2s are exempt).

Mistakes 9 and 10: paperwork and the seller

The IMUGA Traveller Declaration is free and can be filed no earlier than 96 hours before arrival. Every traveller needs one, including babies.

Before paying a Malaysian agency, check its licence on the MOTAC TOBTAB search. Operating a travel business without a MOTAC licence is an offence under the Tourism Industry Act 1992.

Two smaller mistakes worth knowing

Some travellers book a local island without checking the day of the week. Public ferries on some routes, including Male to Maafushi, do not run on Fridays, and many shops close around midday for prayers. A shared speedboat booked ahead avoids the problem.

Others pack for a resort and arrive on a local island. On inhabited islands you cover shoulders and knees in public, and swimwear is for designated bikini beaches only. Bring light long sleeves and trousers or a sarong.

Neither costs much money, but both can change the feel of a first day.

A five-minute check before you pay

Before paying any deposit, read the quote once with these questions in mind. What time does my flight land, and does the transfer run then? Is the price per person or per room, with or without flights?

Are service charge, TGST at 17% and Green Tax at the current rate included? What does the meal plan cover, and what will I pay for at the resort? Does the room fit everyone, with child ages stated?

If each answer is clear in writing, you have avoided most of the mistakes on this page.

Who makes which mistakes

First-timers tend to make the flight and tax mistakes. Families most often hit room size and seaplane baggage. Budget travellers comparing many packages fall into the price basis trap.

If you are comparing offers now, read how to compare Maldives quotes fairly and why the cheapest package might cost more. Then work through the first-time traveller checklist. Figures here were checked in October 2026.

Questions travellers ask

Is it a mistake to book flights and the resort separately?
Not in itself. Many Malaysians buy their own AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines fare and a resort package separately. The risk is that nobody checks the two fit, so a delay or a late arrival becomes your problem. If you book separately, confirm the transfer timing with the resort before paying for the flight.
Is a non-refundable rate always a mistake?
No. It can be good value when your leave is approved and your dates are fixed. It becomes a mistake when dates might move, when a family member's school calendar is not confirmed, or when you have not checked travel insurance for cancellation cover.
What should I do if I already booked an evening flight to a seaplane resort?
Book a night near the airport, often in Hulhumale, and move the seaplane to the next morning. Tell the resort your flight details so it can set the transfer, and check whether your first resort night needs changing. It costs a hotel night but keeps the rest of the trip intact.
