How to use this checklist
Work through each group in order, from documents to packing. Each item has a short reason so you can judge what applies to your trip.
This checklist sits in our Start Here hub. For the broader background, read what Malaysians should know before booking the Maldives.
Documents and entry
Malaysians receive a free tourist visa on arrival if they meet the entry conditions. Immigration officers still decide entry at the border.
- Passport is machine-readable and valid at least one month beyond your stay. This is the official Maldives rule; your airline may apply its own stricter check, so more validity is safer.
- Passport is not an extended-validity passport. These are refused for entry.
- Confirmed return or onward ticket. Officers ask for it at arrival.
- Prepaid, confirmed booking at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse. Keep the confirmation on your phone and on paper.
- Enough funds for your stay. A card plus some cash is sensible.
- IMUGA Traveller Declaration for every traveller, including infants. It is free and opens 96 hours before arrival. Use the IMUGA deadline reminder to set the date.
Flights and transfers
- Your flight leaves from KLIA. Nonstop flights to Male found for 2026 leave only from Kuala Lumpur; Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching travellers connect there.
- Arrival time matches the transfer. Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset; land by about 15:30 for a same-day seaplane.
- Evening arrival has a night booked near the airport. Batik Air lands about 21:55.
- Seaplane bags within 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand per person. Trans Maldivian charges USD 5 per kg over this.
- Speedboat or ferry time confirmed for local islands. Public ferries do not run on Fridays on some routes.
- Clocks set back 3 hours. Maldives is UTC+5, Malaysia UTC+8.
Money
- Some US dollars in small notes. Resort bills and many tourist prices are in USD.
- Card with low foreign transaction fees. Resort bills are often settled by card.
- Budget for about 28.7% service and tax on rates that exclude it, plus Green Tax. Check whether your quote already includes these.
- Cash above USD 10,000 declared on arrival. It is required by law.
Customs and local rules
- No alcohol in your luggage, including duty-free. It will be confiscated.
- No pork or pork products. These cannot be brought in.
- Leave vapes at home. Guidance treats them as prohibited.
- Modest clothes for local islands. Cover shoulders and knees in public, with swimwear only on bikini beaches.
- No topless sunbathing anywhere. This applies at resorts too.
Health and safety
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation. Atolls are far from hospitals.
- Dive insurance if you dive. Decompression chambers are few; ADK Hospital in Male has one.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, hat and rash guard. Equatorial sun is strong all year.
- Emergency contacts saved. Malaysia's nearest mission is the High Commission in Colombo.
Packing
- Type G adapter. Sockets are 230 V and three-pin UK style are common.
- Soft bag if you take a seaplane. It is easier to keep within weight.
- Light long sleeves and a sarong. Useful for local islands, prayers and sun.
- Snorkel mask that fits. Rental masks may not fit well.
Who this checklist suits
It covers a standard holiday for adults and families. Divers, honeymooners and families with infants have extra items, which our specialist pages cover.
If you are travelling overseas for the first time, also read whether the Maldives suits first-time overseas travellers and what to expect at Velana airport. Rules were checked in October 2026; confirm entry rules on the immigration website before you fly.
