Fulidhoo is the local island for people who want the Maldives at walking pace. It is tiny, it is quiet, and its best-known residents are the nurse sharks and stingrays that drift into the shallows beside the jetty.
This page covers what the island is like, who it suits and how a stay works. For local islands in general, start with the beginner guide to Maldives local islands, or browse other options in the island directory.
What kind of island is Fulidhoo?
Fulidhoo is an inhabited local island in Vaavu Atoll, south of the Male atolls. A 2025 travel guide puts it at about 700 m long and 250 m wide, so you can walk from one end to the other in minutes.
There is a single jetty, a small village of sandy lanes, a mosque, a health centre and a few shops. Guesthouses are family-run and small, and many sit within sight of the water.
The sand lanes are soft, so wheeled luggage is awkward. Guesthouses usually meet guests at the jetty and move bags by small truck.
Who Fulidhoo suits, and who should look elsewhere
| Traveller | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couples wanting quiet | Strong | Small, slow and few crowds |
| Snorkellers | Strong | Rays and nurse sharks a short walk away |
| Muslim travellers | Strong | Mosque on the island, no alcohol |
| Older travellers | Good | Everything within a short walk |
| Families with young children | Good, with care | Calm village, but watch children by the jetty |
| Night owls and shoppers | Weak | A handful of cafes, very little after dark |
| Travellers landing in the evening | Weak | Last shared boat leaves Male around 16:00 |
If you want more restaurants and excursions, the Maafushi versus Fulidhoo comparison sets out the trade-off.
Island customs and the bikini beach
Fulidhoo is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, cafes and shops, and expect shops to pause briefly at prayer times.
Swimwear is allowed on the designated bikini beach, which a 2025 travel guide places on the east side of the island. Read what a bikini beach is for the general rules.
There is no alcohol on the island. Some excursions visit nearby resorts for a few hours, which is how many guests enjoy a resort pool or a drink without changing island.
How a stay on Fulidhoo works
Most Malaysian visitors fly AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines from KUL, land in the late morning and take the 16:00 shared speedboat. The morning boat, reported at about 10:00, is usually too early for a same-day connection.
Days are simple: snorkel or watch the rays by the jetty, take one boat trip a day with your guesthouse or the dive centre, and eat at your guesthouse or one of a few cafes. Evenings are dark and quiet.
The return boats are reported at about 07:30 and 13:30, or about 07:00 only on Fridays. Pick a flight home that leaves enough buffer after the boat lands.
Getting there in brief
The shared speedboat takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1.5 hours and is reported at about USD 40 per person each way. Guesthouses usually book it and add it to your bill.
A slow public ferry runs on a few days a week and also links Fulidhoo with Maafushi. The step by step options are in how to get to Fulidhoo from Male airport.
Money, services and taxes
There is no ATM on Fulidhoo, according to every guide we checked. Draw cash at Velana airport or on Maafushi before you arrive, and carry small US dollar notes.
Guesthouses often accept cards, sometimes with a fee of a few per cent, but cafes and minimarkets usually want cash. Ask your guesthouse what it accepts before you arrive.
Guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, plus 10% service and 17% Tourism GST on the room. The Fulidhoo cost guide shows the arithmetic.
Practical checklist before you go
- Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking at a registered property.
- IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
- Cash: enough US dollars for meals, tips and trips, since there is no ATM.
- Medicines: pack your own; the island has a small health centre only.
- Mosquito repellent: guides recommend it, especially in the evenings.
- Season: the northeast monsoon, about December to April, is usually drier and calmer for the boat.
Honeymooners, families and older travellers
Honeymooners who like quiet often enjoy Fulidhoo, though there is no alcohol and no resort service. Some couples add a resort night at the end of the trip.
Families find the island easy to walk, but the shallows by the jetty draw sharks and rays, so supervise children closely. Older travellers like the short distances; the speedboat can be bumpy in rough seas, so the afternoon boat on a calm day is worth choosing.
When a different choice works better
Choose Maafushi if your trip is 3 nights or less, your flight lands late, or you want many restaurants and excursions. Choose a resort if privacy and full service matter more than local life.
Choose Fulidhoo when quiet is the point, you like marine life close to shore and you are happy with a simple island. For guesthouse choice, see Fulidhoo guesthouses and how to choose.
