Himmafushi guesthouses: how to choose where to stay

Choosing a guesthouse on Himmafushi is mostly about location and size. The island is small, but a few minutes' walk matters when you carry a surfboard or have small children.

How many places are there to stay on Himmafushi?

A 2026 island guide counts about 22 guesthouses on Himmafushi. Most are small family-run places with 2 to 12 rooms; only a few are larger.

There are no resorts on the island. If you want resort facilities, consider a split stay with a North Male resort.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit

Send these in writing and keep the replies. They prevent most surprises on arrival.

• What is the registered property name, and will it appear on my invoice?
• Is the rate per room per night, and does it include breakfast?
• Are the 10% service charge, 17% GST and USD 6 Green Tax included or extra?
• Who books the speedboat, what does it cost, and where do we meet?
• Which payment methods do you accept, and is there a card fee?
• What is the cancellation policy if a flight changes?

Pool or no pool?

The pool matters more on Himmafushi than on beach islands, because the bikini beach is small and partly stony. Families and couples who want to swim without a boat trip should shortlist the pool guesthouses first.

Surfers and divers who are out most of the day can save by choosing a smaller place without a pool.

Registration, taxes and booking basis

Maldives immigration asks visitors for a confirmed, paid booking at a registered property. Use a booking you can show on arrival, with the property name, dates and guest names.

Guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, with under 2s exempt. Room rates then attract a 10% service charge and 17% Tourism GST.

Reading reviews and photos sensibly

Small guesthouses change quickly: a new owner, a renovated floor or a new building next door can change the stay. Look at the most recent guest photos rather than the oldest professional ones.

Check the map pin against the jetty, the northern bikini beach and Jailbreaks. On an island under 1 km long, every option is walkable, but a 10-minute walk with luggage on sand feels longer at midday.

Read complaints for patterns. Construction noise, hot water and Wi-Fi come up often on busy local islands, and a quick question to the guesthouse usually tells you whether a problem has been fixed.

How many nights, and in which season?

Two to four nights suits most non-surfers, because the island beach is small and most days involve a boat trip. Surfers often stay a week or longer in the March to October season.

In the drier northeast monsoon, about December to April, seas are usually calmer for snorkelling trips. Rates and availability shift with Malaysian school holidays too, so ask for quotes early if your dates fall in them.

When to look beyond Himmafushi guesthouses

If you want soft sand outside your door, a quieter island such as Fulidhoo or Dhigurah fits better. If you want resort service for part of the trip, add one or two resort nights near Male.
