What to do on Himmafushi: surf, dives, beach and boat trips

You are thinking about Himmafushi and want to know how you would actually fill the days, with or without a surfboard.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Himmafushi is an activity island rather than a beach island. Surfers walk to Jailbreaks and take short boat rides to Sultans, Honkys and the Thulusdhoo breaks, mainly from about March to October. Divers have a PADI dive centre and North Male sites close by, and everyone can book snorkelling, sandbank, fishing and Male trips. The bikini beach on the northern tip is small with some stony water, so plan boat trips for beach time.

What is Himmafushi best for?

Himmafushi is best for surfing and diving, with snorkelling and sandbank trips as the main options for non-surfers. Time on the island beach is a small part of most stays.

Surfing: Jailbreaks and nearby breaks

Jailbreaks is a right-hand reef break a short walk from many guesthouses. It is the reason most surfers choose Himmafushi.

Sultans and Honkys are about 5 to 10 minutes by boat, and the Cokes and Chickens breaks near Thulusdhoo about 20 to 30 minutes. A 2026 guide reports board rental at about USD 20 to 30 a day and surf packages with boat trips at about USD 50 to 75 a day.

The season runs about March to October, peaking about June to August. That is the wetter southwest monsoon, so expect showers. Read the Maldives surf season guide before you choose dates.

Diving from Himmafushi

A PADI 5-Star dive centre, Himmafushi Scuba Adventure, operates on the island, according to a 2026 guide. Its 2025 list started at about USD 150 for a two-dive half day and USD 155 for a Discover Scuba session.

Nearby sites named in island guides include HP Reef, Himmafushi Corner, Lankan Manta Point and the Maldives Victory wreck. Mantas at Lankan are reported mainly in the southwest monsoon, about May to November.

Dive the World notes clearer water at North Male sites from about January to April. Bring your certification card and logbook.

Snorkelling, sandbanks and other boat trips

Local operators and guesthouses sell half-day snorkelling trips, sandbank picnics, dolphin trips and fishing trips. A 2026 guide also lists kayaking, paddleboarding and jet skiing.

Ask each operator for the price per person, the trip length, whether gear and drinks are included, and the plan if the sea is rough. Choose licensed operators recommended by your guesthouse.

The bikini beach and swimming

The designated bikini beach is on the northern tip of the island. A 2026 guide describes it as small, with some stony water, so reef shoes help.

Outside the bikini beach, cover shoulders and knees. For the general rules, read what a bikini beach is.

Village life and nearby Male

The main street has small souvenir shops, and Lonely Planet points to quiet back lanes and an old cemetery with coral headstones. Dress modestly and ask before photographing people.

Male and Hulhumale are about 20 minutes away by speedboat. A half day there adds markets, shopping and more restaurants.

A simple 3-day plan

  • Day 1: arrive mid-morning, settle in, afternoon walk and sunset at the northern tip.
  • Day 2: morning surf session or two-dive trip; afternoon rest; evening at a harbour cafe.
  • Day 3: half-day snorkelling and sandbank trip; pack and confirm the next day's boat.

Non-surfers can swap day 2 for a dolphin trip or a half day in Male. For costs, see what a Himmafushi holiday costs.

Safety on surf and boat trips

Reef breaks are shallow, so wear reef boots and a helmet if you are not used to coral. Surf with a local guide on your first session to learn the entry and exit channels.

On boat trips, ask for life jackets and a briefing, and tell the crew if anyone is a weak swimmer. Carry insurance that covers surfing, diving and evacuation to Male.

When another island suits your activities better

If you want long swimming beaches and shore snorkelling, Fulidhoo or Dhigurah fit better. If whale sharks are the goal, South Ari islands are the base. Beginners who have never surfed may find gentler options in our beginner surfing guide.

Questions travellers ask

Can beginners surf on Himmafushi?
Jailbreaks and the nearby North Male breaks are reef breaks that suit intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginners should book lessons with a surf school that picks the gentlest spot on the day, and should avoid the peak swell months. Our beginner surfing guide covers better options if you have never surfed.
Is there a house reef for snorkelling?
Not a well-known one. Guesthouse and guide pages describe snorkelling mainly as a boat trip rather than from the shore. Book a half-day snorkelling trip to nearby reefs, and ask whether gear, the boat and any marine park fee are included.
Can we visit Male or Hulhumale from Himmafushi?
Yes. The speedboat to Male takes about 15 to 25 minutes, so a half day of shopping, the fish market or a meal in Hulhumale is easy. Check the return boat time before you go, since the last boat can be early on some days.
Are there things to do on Himmafushi for children?
Children usually enjoy sandbank picnics, dolphin trips and short snorkelling stops more than the island beach. Ask operators for life jackets in child sizes and calm-water sites. Surf and dive trips have minimum ages and skill levels, so check before you book.
