When to complete IMUGA before your Maldives flight

You know IMUGA has a 96-hour window and want to know the exact moment you can file it for your flight from KLIA.

Last reviewed 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

You can file the IMUGA Traveller Declaration from 96 hours before your arrival time in Male, and you must file it before you land. Because Male is 3 hours behind Malaysia, the window opens 3 hours later on the Malaysian clock than the arrival time printed on your ticket. The safest moment is one to two days before you leave home.

Key facts

  • Official window

    96 hours

Maldives Immigration, checked 12 Oct 2026

  • Older advice seen online

    72 or 48 hours

    Out of date

The IMUGA window opens 96 hours before you land in Male. Count back from your arrival time, not your departure time, and remember that Male runs 3 hours behind Malaysia.

For how to fill in the form itself, see the IMUGA step-by-step guide. All entry topics sit in the entry and travel paperwork hub.

How early can you submit IMUGA?

No earlier than 96 hours, or four days, before your arrival in the Maldives. That is the rule on the Maldives Immigration tourist visa page, checked on 12 October 2026.

The deadline at the other end is arrival itself. You must have the declaration done before you reach the immigration counter at Velana.

Opening times for each KLIA nonstop flight

Three airlines fly nonstop from KUL to Male, taking about 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 25 minutes. The table uses the sample October 2026 schedule and assumes a Saturday arrival.

Flight (approx. times)Lands in Male (local)Window opens (Male time)Window opens (Malaysia time)
AirAsia, dep KUL about 08:35Sat 09:50Tue 09:50Tue 12:50
Malaysia Airlines, dep KUL about 10:10Sat 11:25Tue 11:25Tue 14:25
Batik Air, dep KUL about 20:40Sat 21:55Tue 21:55Wed 00:55

Schedules change by season, so check your own e-ticket. The method stays the same: take the Male arrival time, go back four days, then add 3 hours for the Malaysian clock.

The Batik Air row is the one that trips people up. Its window opens just after midnight Malaysian time, so a family trying on Tuesday evening will find it too early.

The best time to file

For most travellers, the sweet spot is one to two days before departure. You are well inside the window, your flight is unlikely to change, and you still have time to fix a typo calmly.

Filing at home also means everyone's passport is to hand. That matters for families, where one parent usually files every declaration.

Avoid leaving it to the KLIA check-in queue. Some airlines ask for the QR code before issuing a boarding pass.

Travellers flying from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching

There are no nonstop flights to Male from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching. Most travellers connect through KUL.

Your window still counts back from the Male arrival time of the final flight. If you fly to KL the day before and stay overnight near KLIA, file at home before the domestic flight so you are not doing it in a hotel room late at night.

Connecting through a third country

Some travellers fly via Colombo, Singapore, Dubai or another hub to use points or a cheaper fare. The window still counts back from the time your final flight lands in Male.

On these routes the "country of departure" on the form is the country your last flight leaves from. Long layovers can push the arrival a day later than you expect, so read the arrival date on the final leg carefully.

When you must file again

A new declaration is needed when the details on it are no longer true. The common cases are a changed flight number, a changed arrival date, a renewed passport or a switch of accommodation.

The form is free, so redoing it costs only a few minutes. Use the new QR code and delete the old one from your phone to avoid confusion at the counter.

A simple reminder plan

  • When you book: note the Male arrival time from your e-ticket.
  • Use our IMUGA deadline reminder calculator to get the opening time in Malaysian time.
  • Set two phone alarms: one when the window opens, one a day before you fly.
  • File each traveller's declaration and save every QR code offline.
  • Before leaving for the airport, check each QR code opens.

Who needs to plan the timing most carefully

Families and groups need the most time, because each person files separately. Travellers on the late Batik Air flight should note the midnight opening.

Honeymooners juggling a wedding week and older travellers relying on a relative should agree in advance who files and when. Everyone should use only the official portal: read whether IMUGA is free before you search for it.

Questions travellers ask

What happens if I try to file IMUGA too early?
The portal is built around the 96-hour rule, so an early attempt may be rejected or treated as invalid. Wait until the window opens. Our deadline reminder calculator gives you the opening time for your flight so you can set a phone alarm rather than guessing.
Can I complete IMUGA at KLIA or on arrival in Male?
You can, if you have a working phone and data, but it is a poor plan. Airlines may ask for the QR code at check-in, airport Wi-Fi can be slow, and a family filing four forms in a queue is stressful. Filing at home a day or two before departure avoids all of this.
My flight is delayed by a day. Do I need a new declaration?
If your arrival date changes, the declaration no longer matches your real flight. Submit a fresh declaration with the new flight details once you are inside the 96-hour window of the new arrival time. It is free, so there is no cost to redo it.
Why do some sites say 72 hours?
Earlier versions of the rule and some airline pages used shorter windows, and many blogs were never updated. The Maldives Immigration tourist visa page we checked on 12 October 2026 says 96 hours. Treat 96 hours as the current rule and any shorter figure as outdated advice that still happens to work.
