A KLIA to Male return started from about RM1,155 in economy on a search on 11 October 2026. What you finally pay depends on the airline, the date, and the extras you add to the base fare.

What did KL to Male fares cost in October 2026?
A Traveloka search on 11 October 2026 showed a cheapest return of about RM1,155. One-way fares for early November were about RM473 on AirAsia and RM479 on Batik Air, while Malaysia Airlines showed about RM1,028 to RM1,049 one way.
All three fly nonstop in about 4h15 to 4h25. AirAsia landed around 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines around 11:25 Maldives time, while Batik Air arrived around 21:55.
These are snapshots. Fares change daily, so treat them as a guide to the range, not a price you can book.
What is inside the ticket price?
A Malaysia to Maldives fare is several charges added together. Knowing them helps you compare two fares fairly.
| Component | Who sets it | Typical amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base fare | Airline | Varies daily | The part that moves most with demand |
| Carrier surcharges | Airline | Varies | Fuel or insurance surcharges, shown in the breakdown |
| Passenger service charge, KLIA | MAVCOM | RM73 Terminal 1, RM50 Terminal 2 | International departures, 1 Jun 2024 to 31 Dec 2026 |
| Departure levy | Government of Malaysia | RM20 economy, RM150 other classes | Non-ASEAN destinations; under 2s exempt |
| Airport Development Fee, Male | Maldives | USD 50 economy, USD 120 business | Foreign passengers departing Male |
| Checked bags | Airline | Varies | Often extra on low-cost fares |
| Seats, meals, insurance | Airline | Varies | Optional on most fares |
The PSC and levy apply when you leave Malaysia, and the ADF when you leave the Maldives. On a normal return, you pay each once.
A separate Maldives departure tax is also reported, but its amount is not confirmed, so check the tax lines on your booking.
How do you read the tax breakdown?
Most booking sites show a link such as "fare details" or "taxes and fees" before payment. Open it and look for the base fare, the surcharges, and each government charge listed by code or name.
If the Malaysian levy, the KLIA charge or the Male fee seems to be missing, ask the airline before paying. A fare that leaves government charges to be paid later is not cheaper, only incomplete.
For children, check the breakdown too. Infants under two are exempt from the Malaysian departure levy, but other charges may still apply.
Worked example: comparing a low-cost and a full-service fare
A low-cost fare can look half the price of a full-service fare until bags are added. Here is the comparison to run for one person, return.
- Take the low-cost return fare, for example about RM950 from two RM473 one-way fares.
- Add a checked bag in each direction at the price shown in the booking flow.
- Add seat selection and a meal if you would buy them.
- Compare the result with the full-service return, which already includes a bag and meal.
If the low-cost total stays clearly lower, it is the better buy. If the gap is small, the full-service fare may be worth it for the arrival time or flexibility.
Which extras matter for a Maldives trip?
Checked baggage matters most, especially for seaplane resorts. Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage and charges USD 5 per kg over that, so a big international allowance can still cost you at the seaplane.
Arrival time matters as much as price. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and you should land by about 15:30 to reach a seaplane resort the same day. A cheap evening arrival may add a hotel night in Hulhumale.
Our page on checked baggage budgeting covers allowances by airline.
How should travellers outside KL plan?
Travellers from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching usually connect through KLIA. Add the domestic fare, and allow a buffer in case the first flight is late.
Booking both legs on one ticket usually gives more protection than two separate tickets. The direct versus connecting flights page explains the trade-offs.
Which fare suits which traveller?
Low-cost fares suit budget and local-island travellers with light bags and morning arrivals. Full-service fares suit families with lots of luggage, honeymooners carrying formal wear and travellers who want a meal and more flexibility.
When you compare packages, check whether flights are included. Most Malaysian Maldives packages exclude them, as our guide on comparing a resort-only rate with a flight-inclusive quote shows. To add your fare to a full trip budget, use the trip cost calculator.
