All-inclusive versus full board in the Maldives, cost and break-even

You are choosing between paying for drinks as you go or prepaying them, and want to know which costs less for your group.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

All-inclusive adds drinks, usually including house alcohol, to full board's three meals. At Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, checked on 12 October 2026, it costs USD 50++ more per person per day, about RM263 taxed. It pays off for travellers who would spend more than about USD 50++ a day on drinks. Non-drinkers usually do better on full board, or on a soft-drinks-only plan where offered.

The short verdict by traveller type

All-inclusive is a drinks decision. The meals on full board and all-inclusive are often similar, so the extra cost buys mostly beverages.

  • Couples who drink with dinner and at sunset: all-inclusive usually wins after two or three drinks each a day.
  • Non-drinkers and most Muslim travellers: full board, plus a soft drinks plan if the resort offers one.
  • Families with young children: full board, unless the parents drink regularly.
  • Groups of friends: depends on the group, but plans often must match for everyone in the booking.

Side-by-side: what each plan buys at one resort

Hard Rock Hotel Maldives publishes a clear ladder of plans, checked on 12 October 2026. All prices are per person per day and "++".

Premium all-inclusiveUSD 299++Premium drinks, 30% off in-villa dining and spa384.811,574

Taxed figures use 10% service charge then 17% TGST (x 1.287), and RM4.09 per USD (Business Today, 7 October 2026).

Other resorts package things differently. Centara Ras Fushi's premium all-inclusive, for example, adds afternoon tea, sundowner canapes, a replenished minibar and a USD 50 spa credit per adult per stay. Those extras have value only if you will use them.

The break-even: how many drinks make it worth it?

Compare the pre-tax gap with your likely drinks spend at "++" menu prices. Both sides carry the same taxes, so the "++" figures are comparable.

At Hard Rock the gap from full board to all-inclusive is USD 50++ per person per day. If a cocktail or glass of wine costs around USD 15 to 20++ at the bar, which is a planning assumption for you to check against the resort's own menu, three drinks a day reach the break-even.

Remember soft drinks, coffee and juice count too. A non-drinker who has four soft drinks and two coffees a day may still come close, which is why the soft drinks plan exists.

Worked example: a couple over four nights

A honeymoon couple expects two glasses of wine each at dinner and one cocktail at sunset. At USD 18++ a drink that is 3 x 18 = USD 54++ per person per day.

The all-inclusive gap is USD 50++, so all-inclusive edges ahead by USD 4++ per person per day. Over four nights the saving is 4 x 2 x 4 = USD 32++, about RM168 taxed.

The bigger benefit is not the saving. It is never signing a bar bill, which many couples value. If the same couple only shared one bottle over the whole trip, full board would save them about RM2,100 over four nights (50 x 2 x 4 x 1.287 x 4.09).

Packages from Malaysia often decide for you

Many Malaysian packages bundle all-inclusive with transfers and taxes. HolidayGoGoGo's Brennia Kottefaru honeymoon package, checked on 11 October 2026, listed all-inclusive meals, return seaplane, Green Tax, service charge and taxes in its per-person price.

That makes the plan easy to budget, but it also means you pay for drinks whether or not you have them. Ask the agency whether a full board version exists, and the difference per person, before you accept the bundle.

Who should look past all-inclusive

Muslim travellers who avoid alcohol, families with young children, and anyone on a diving or excursion-heavy trip usually get less value from all-inclusive. A full board plan is simpler and cheaper for them.

For the step below full board, our comparison of half board versus full board costs shows when even lunch is not worth prepaying. For the real total of an all-inclusive holiday, see how much an all-inclusive resort holiday really costs, and run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Does all-inclusive cover everything at the resort?
No. All-inclusive is a drinks and meals plan, and its limits vary. Hard Rock's version excludes premium drinks, room service, the minibar and some venues, and serves drinks by the glass only. Spa treatments, diving and motorised water sports are almost always extra. Read the exclusions before assuming a bar tab will be zero.
Is all-inclusive worth it if I do not drink alcohol?
Rarely, on price alone. Without alcohol, you are mainly paying for soft drinks, juices and coffee. A full board plan plus a soft drinks package, where the resort sells one, usually costs less. Some all-inclusive plans add afternoon tea or water sports, so compare those extras too.
Do children pay the all-inclusive rate?
Child rules are set per resort. Hard Rock lets children under 6 eat free from the kids' menu, gives 6 to 11s a 50% rate or a free kids' menu, and charges 12s and over as adults, with alcohol only for those 18 and over. Teens can take the soft drinks plan when parents are on all-inclusive.
Can we upgrade to all-inclusive after arriving?
Some resorts allow it, but many require the whole stay and every guest in the booking to be on one plan, as Hard Rock states. Upgrading mid-stay may not be possible at all. Decide before you fly, and get the plan written into your confirmation.
