Airport-to-resort transfer charges in the Maldives: what to budget

The transfer is often the line that turns a reasonable resort rate into an expensive trip, so it pays to budget it before choosing the island.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Budget about RM205 per person return for a shared speedboat to Maafushi, RM400 to RM1,500 for a speedboat to resorts near Male, RM1,400 to RM2,100 for a domestic flight plus boat, and RM1,600 to RM3,400 for a shared seaplane. For a couple that is roughly RM400 to RM6,700, and for a family of four up to about RM11,000. Ranges are market bands checked October 2026 at RM4.09 per USD, not quotes.

Key facts

  • Shared seaplane band

    USD 400 to 820

    Per adult return

  • Domestic flight plus boat

    USD 350 to 520

    Per adult return

  • Seaplane excess baggage

    USD 5 per kg

Trans Maldivian, over 20 kg plus 5 kg

Maldives airport transfers cost anything from about RM205 per person return by shared boat to a local island, to more than RM3,300 per person by seaplane. For a family, this line can rival the cost of the room.

How much should you budget per person?

Use the bands below as a planning range. They are per person, return, shared transfers, converted at RM4.09 per USD.

Sources: Maafushi.com (USD 25 each way), Maldives.com (ferries roughly USD 2 to 3 each way) and I'm Maldives (resort bands), checked 11 Oct 2026. Private transfers cost more.

What does it cost for a couple and a family?

Multiply by the number of travellers, then apply any child discount. I'm Maldives notes children aged 2 to 11 often pay 30% to 40% less than adults.

Transfer (mid-point used)Couple, RMFamily of four, RM
Shared boat to Maafushi, USD 50409675
Resort speedboat, USD 1801,4722,429
Domestic flight plus boat, USD 4353,5585,871
Shared seaplane, USD 6205,0728,368

The family column assumes two adults and two children aged 2 to 11 at 35% off, so it equals 3.3 adult fares. If your children are 12 or older, or the operator gives no child discount, use four adult fares. That is likely on the Maafushi shared boat, which lists one per-person price.

Which extra transfer costs catch people out?

The fare is not always the full transfer cost. Four extras are common.

  • Excess baggage: Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage, then charges USD 5 per kg plus taxes.
  • A night near the airport: seaplanes fly only in daylight, so landing after about 15:30 can mean a hotel night and a morning transfer.
  • Private boats: if no shared boat fits your flight, a private speedboat is priced per boat.
  • Taxes: some transfer prices are quoted before service charge and TGST, so check whether the price is net.

Budget an extra hotel night if you fly Batik Air, which lands around 21:55. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines arrivals in the morning usually connect the same day.

Worked example: one trip, three transfer choices

Take a couple flying AirAsia, landing around 09:50, with RM20,000 to spend on a 4-night trip. The transfer choice alone moves their budget by up to RM3,600.

By shared speedboat to a resort near Male at USD 180 each, they spend about RM1,472 and arrive before lunch. By domestic flight and boat at USD 435 each, they spend about RM3,558 and reach a quieter atoll in the early afternoon.

By shared seaplane at USD 620 each, they spend about RM5,072 and land on the resort lagoon. The seaplane option leaves about RM3,600 less for the room, meals and excursions than the speedboat.

None of these is wrong. The point is to choose the transfer on purpose, knowing what it displaces elsewhere in the budget.

How do packages handle the transfer?

Most Malaysian Maldives packages include the transfer, and say which type. The HolidayGoGoGo Maafushi package includes a return speedboat, and its Brennia Kottefaru honeymoon package includes a return seaplane (both checked 11 Oct 2026).

When a package and a resort rate differ by a few thousand ringgit, check this line first. The difference is often the transfer, not the room.

Why does a cheaper resort sometimes cost more overall?

A remote resort with a lower room rate can need a seaplane, which adds RM3,000 or more per couple. A slightly dearer resort near Male, reached by speedboat, can end up cheaper.

Compare total trip cost, not room rate. Our page on why a cheaper island can need a more expensive transfer shows the trade-off with numbers.

How should you decide which transfer to budget for?

Use a simple rule. If the transfer would cost more than one night of your room, look at speedboat resorts first.

Families and older travellers often value the short speedboat ride near Male. Honeymooners may feel the seaplane is part of the experience and budget for it on purpose.

For the experience side of that choice, see speedboat versus seaplane pricing considerations. To see the transfer in your full trip budget, use the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Is the transfer included in my resort rate?
Sometimes, especially in packages sold in Malaysia, but often not when you book a resort's own room rate. Look for the word transfer in the inclusions, and check whether it is shared or private. Our page on whether transfers are included explains the common patterns.
Do infants pay for seaplane transfers?
Trans Maldivian lets infants under two fly free, but they get no baggage allowance of their own. Plan the baby's items within the parents' 20 kg checked and 5 kg hand allowance, or budget for excess at USD 5 per kg plus taxes. Other operators may have different rules.
Can I take the public ferry to a resort?
Resorts are normally reached by their own speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight connection. Public ferries serve inhabited local islands. Some resorts sit close to a local island, but arriving by ferry is not usually practical for a resort stay.
What if my flight lands too late for my transfer?
Seaplanes do not fly after dark, and some speedboat transfers have a last departure time. If you land late, you may need a night near the airport, typically in Hulhumale, and a morning transfer. Budget for that night and the extra meal when you choose your flight.
