Maldives 5D4N versus 7D6N: when longer stays improve value

You can stretch the trip to a week, and you want to know whether the extra two nights are good value or just a bigger bill.

Quick answer

A 7D6N trip improves value when fixed costs (flights and transfers) are a large share of the total. For a couple at a USD 500 seaplane resort, cost per full island day drops from about RM6,046 on 5D4N to about RM4,720 on 7D6N. On a local island the saving per day is smaller in ringgit, about RM1,674 down to RM1,234, but the total stays low.

Key facts

  • Seaplane resort, per full day

    RM6,046 to RM4,720

  • Local island, per full day

  • Shared seaplane

    USD 400 to 820

Does a 7D6N trip give better value than 5D4N?

It does when your fixed costs are high. Flights and transfers cost the same whether you stay four nights or six, so every extra night spreads them thinner.

When fixed costs are small, as on a local island close to Male, the gain per day is real but modest. This page works through both cases, and the wider cost picture is on our Budget and Real Cost hub.

How to measure value: cost per full island day

Divide the total trip cost by the number of full days you spend on the island. Arrival and departure days are travel days, so they do not count.

A 5D4N trip has three full days. A 7D6N trip has five. Two extra nights therefore add two full days, a 67% increase in usable time.

This measure is fairer than cost per night, because what you are buying is time in the water and on the beach, not hotel nights.

Worked example 1: a couple at a seaplane resort

Assumptions: two adults, a USD 500 beach villa before tax (inside the five-star band on holiday.com.mv), a shared seaplane at USD 600 per adult return (inside the USD 400 to 820 range on immaldives.com), and return flights at RM1,155 each (Traveloka, 11 Oct 2026). Meals are excluded.

Cost per full dayabout RM6,046about RM4,720

The nightly figure is USD 500 x 1.287 = USD 643.50, plus USD 24 Green Tax for two. At RM4.09 that is about RM2,730 per night.

Fixed costs here are RM7,218, or 40% of the 5D4N total. That is why the extra two nights cut the cost per day by about RM1,326.

Worked example 2: a couple on a local island

Assumptions: a USD 100 guesthouse room before tax, USD 6 Green Tax per guest, the shared Maafushi speedboat at USD 25 per person each way (maafushi.com, checked 11 Oct 2026), and the same flights.

Here the extra two nights cost only about RM1,151 for the couple. Flights are the biggest fixed cost, so the longer stay still pays off.

A simple decision rule

Work out your fixed costs (flights plus return transfers for everyone) and compare them with the 5D4N total.

  • Fixed costs above about a third of the total: 7D6N will lower your cost per day noticeably. This is typical of seaplane and domestic-flight resorts.
  • Fixed costs below about a quarter: the gain per day is smaller. Decide on leave and preference rather than value.
  • Expensive nightly rate with cheap transfer: a water villa near Male by speedboat gains least from extra nights. Consider adding cheaper nights elsewhere instead.

You can test your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.

What the extra two nights can add besides the room

Meals are the main extra. On a resort meal plan, two more days of full board or all-inclusive for two people can approach the room cost itself, so ask for the plan price per night.

Excursions also add up. With five full days you are more likely to book a snorkel trip, a dive or a sandbank picnic, which is part of the point but belongs in the budget.

Green Tax rises with each night, at USD 24 per night for a couple at a resort or USD 12 at a small guesthouse. Children under two are exempt.

Who suits a week, and who suits 5D4N

A week suits honeymooners at seaplane resorts, divers who want several dive days, and families who need slow days for young children. It also suits travellers using the wetter months, when an extra day or two gives more chances of calm water.

5D4N suits tight annual leave, first-timers testing the idea, and travellers whose nightly rate is very high compared with their transfer. For a shorter step up, see 4D3N versus 5D4N. For a week split across islands, see budgeting a split stay.

Prices change by date and season, so use these as a method and confirm current rates before you decide.

Questions travellers ask

Do resorts give a discount for longer stays?
Some do, through offers such as stay-and-pay deals or a free night, but terms vary and change often. Treat any long-stay discount as a bonus to confirm on a written quote, not something to assume. The value case on this page works without one.
Is 7D6N too long for a first Maldives trip?
Not if you enjoy slow days. Travellers who want variety often split a week between two properties, such as a local island and a resort. That keeps the cost per day down and adds change of scene, at the price of one extra transfer.
Does a longer stay make the weather risk smaller?
It gives you more chances of calm days for snorkelling or excursions during the wetter southwest monsoon, roughly May to November. It does not change the weather itself, but it reduces the chance that one rainy spell takes most of your trip.
How do Malaysian school holidays affect a 7D6N plan?
School holidays give families the leave for a week, but resort rates and flights are often higher in those windows. Run the same cost-per-day comparison with peak rates. A longer stay outside school holidays can cost about the same as a short stay inside them.
