How do you convert a per-room price into a per-guest price?
Take the room rate, add the taxes, add the per-guest charges, convert to ringgit, then divide by the guests who pay. The order matters because some charges follow the room and some follow the person.
Room-based charges are the nightly rate, the 10% service charge and the 17% tourism GST. Person-based charges are Green Tax, transfers and flights. This page sits inside our Budget and Real Cost hub, which covers each of those charges on its own page.
Worked example: a USD 400 resort room for two adults
Here is a mid-range resort room at USD 400 per night before tax, within the USD 300 to 550 four-star band on holiday.com.mv (checked 11 Oct 2026). Two adults stay four nights.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Room, 4 nights | USD 400 x 4 | USD 1,600.00 |
| Add 10% service charge | USD 1,600 x 1.10 | USD 1,760.00 |
| Add 17% GST on that | USD 1,760 x 1.17 | USD 2,059.20 |
| Green Tax, 2 guests, 4 nights | USD 12 x 2 x 4 | USD 96.00 |
| Room total | USD 2,155.20 | |
| In ringgit | USD 2,155.20 x 4.09 | RM8,814.77 |
| Per guest | RM8,814.77 / 2 | about RM4,407 |
That RM4,407 is accommodation only. Flights, transfers and meals are per person and sit on top.
What happens with one, two or three guests?
The room cost stays fixed while Green Tax rises with each guest. The table uses the same USD 400 room over four nights and assumes no extra-bed charge, which you must confirm.
| Guests in room | Room plus taxes | Green Tax | Total in RM | Per guest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 adult | USD 2,059.20 | USD 48 | RM8,618.45 | RM8,618 |
| 2 adults | USD 2,059.20 | USD 96 | RM8,814.77 | RM4,407 |
| 3 guests | USD 2,059.20 | USD 144 | RM9,011.09 | RM3,004 |
A solo traveller pays almost the whole room. That is why the single supplement for solo travellers can feel steep, even though it simply reflects the room math.
A third guest looks like a bargain on paper. In practice resorts often add a third-person or extra-bed charge, and children have their own rules, covered in charges for children and extra beds.
How do you convert a per-person package back to a per-room figure?
Multiply the per-person twin-share price by two to get what the room really costs as a pair. This lets you compare a Malaysian package with a resort's own rate.
HolidayGoGoGo's Arena Beach 4D3N package was RM2,319 per adult twin share, valid to 31 Oct 2026 (checked 11 Oct 2026). For two people that is RM4,638 for three nights, with speedboat, most meals, excursions and Green Tax included.
You cannot divide that RM4,638 by three to get a nightly room rate. The package bundles transfers, meals and trips, so strip those out mentally before comparing it with a room-only rate.
A quick rule for comparing two quotes
Put both quotes on a per-room-per-stay basis, tax and Green Tax included. Then list what each includes: transfers, meals, excursions.
- If one quote is per person twin share, multiply by two.
- If one quote is per room before tax, multiply by 1.287 and add Green Tax per guest per night.
- If one is in USD, convert at the same rate for both, here RM4.09.
- Only then divide by the number of people.
Our per person versus per room quote normaliser does this for you. For the full trip total including flights, use the trip cost calculator.
Four conversion mistakes that distort the comparison
Most errors come from mixing room-based and person-based charges. These four account for the biggest gaps between what a reader expects and what the final bill shows.
- Halving the room rate and stopping there. Dividing USD 400 by two gives USD 200 per person, but the true figure after tax and Green Tax is about USD 269 per person per night in this example.
- Adding 27% instead of 28.7%. GST is charged on the room plus service charge, so the uplift compounds. On a four-night USD 400 stay the gap is about USD 27, or RM112.
- Using the old tax rates. GST was 16% before 1 July 2025 and Green Tax was USD 6 at resorts before 2025. A rate sheet from 2024 understates the total.
- Comparing a package total with a room-only total. A package may include speedboat, meals and excursions. A room rate includes none of these.
How Green Tax changes the per-guest maths
Green Tax is the one charge that rises with every extra guest, at USD 12 per night at resorts and USD 6 at small inhabited-island guesthouses, according to the MIRA circular. Children under two at check-in are exempt.
At a guesthouse the effect is small. A USD 100 room shared by two over four nights carries USD 48 of Green Tax, about RM196 for the room.
At a resort with three guests it reaches USD 144 over four nights, about RM589. Our page on how Green Tax is charged covers who pays and when.
Who this conversion matters most for
Couples rarely see a big gap, because two guests per room is how most prices are built. Solo travellers, friend groups of three and families with a child gain the most from running the numbers.
If you are a group of five or more, room allocation matters more than the conversion. A group may do better with two rooms at a guesthouse than three villas at a resort.
Prices change by date and are a guide only, so treat these figures as a method rather than a quote.
