Maldives Immigration asks for at least one month of passport validity, not six. Airlines can be stricter, so plan around six months to avoid a refused boarding at KLIA.
This page covers validity only. For the full list of entry conditions, see the Maldives visa on arrival guide for Malaysians and the wider entry and travel paperwork hub.
What does Maldives Immigration actually require?
Three things about the passport itself. It must be machine readable, with the MRZ lines at the bottom of the photo page. It must have at least one month of validity. It must not be a passport whose validity has been extended.
Standard Malaysian passports are machine readable, so the first point is rarely an issue. The expiry date is where travellers get caught.
Why plan for six months anyway?
The person who first checks your passport is not a Maldivian officer. It is the check-in agent at KLIA, using the airline's own systems and policy.
If an airline flies a passenger who is refused entry, the airline pays to fly them back. That is why some carriers and agents apply a six-month rule as a default, even where the destination asks for less.
Six months also protects you from surprises: a delayed return, an illness, or a connecting country with stricter rules. A renewal costs a fraction of a lost holiday.
Check your passport dates in two minutes
Take your return flight date, then compare it with the expiry date on each passport in your group. Use this decision rule.
| Expiry date compared with your return date | What to do |
|---|---|
| More than 6 months after | Book with confidence |
| Between 1 and 6 months after | Meets the Maldives rule, but check your airline's policy in writing, or renew |
| Less than 1 month after | Renew before booking flights |
| Passport validity extended by endorsement | Get a new passport; extended passports are refused |
A worked example: you fly home from Male on 20 December 2026. A passport expiring on 5 February 2027 has about six weeks left. It clears the one-month official rule, but it is well short of six months, so confirm with your airline or renew first.
Damage, names and other passport problems
Validity is not the only thing that stops travellers. A torn data page, water damage or a passport that does not scan can all cause trouble at check-in or immigration.
Make sure the name on your flight ticket matches your passport exactly. Small mismatches are usually fixable with the airline before departure, but much harder at the gate.
If you have lost your passport or travel on a temporary document, read whether you can enter the Maldives with an emergency passport before you book anything.
When should you ask the airline directly?
Ask in writing whenever any passport in your group has less than six months left on the return date. A short message or chat transcript from the airline is worth more than a forum post.
Give the airline your route, both flight dates and each passport's expiry date. Ask whether its check-in staff will accept the passport for the Maldives sector and for the flight home to KLIA.
Keep the reply on your phone. If the check-in agent hesitates, showing the airline's own answer usually settles the question quickly.
If you connect through a third country instead of flying nonstop, ask about that country too. Transit rules can be stricter than the Maldives rule, and the strictest country on your route sets the real minimum.
Renewing your Malaysian passport before the trip
Renew through the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM). Check current processing options and appointments on the JIM website, and allow extra time in the weeks before school holidays when demand is higher.
Book flights only after you have the new passport, or book a fare that allows a free name and document update. Your IMUGA declaration must also use the new passport number.
Who should take extra care
Families are most at risk, because children's passports often expire on a different cycle from their parents'. The entry rules for Malaysian children explain what each child needs.
Grandparents who travel less often and honeymooners who booked a year ahead should also check early. A passport that was fine at booking can be short by the travel date.
Expatriates living in Malaysia should apply the same check to their own passports. The Maldives rule is the same for every nationality.
Once your passport is sorted, the next step is the IMUGA Traveller Declaration, which uses your passport details.
Questions travellers ask
Why do some websites say the Maldives needs six months?
