Malaysian children use the same free visa on arrival as adults. The difference is that every child needs their own passport and their own IMUGA declaration, however young.
This page covers what changes for children. For the adult rules, see the visa on arrival guide, and for the whole family in one list, the Maldives immigration checklist for a Malaysian family. Both sit within the entry and travel paperwork hub.
Do Malaysian children need their own passport?
Yes. Maldives Immigration states that children and minors must have their own passport. A child cannot be added to a parent's passport.
The passport rules are the same as for adults. It must be machine readable, have at least one month of validity and must not be an extended-validity passport.
Children's passports often expire on a different date from their parents'. Read the passport validity guide and check every passport against the return date.
What changes by age?
This table sets out the entry and travel points that shift with a child's age. Ages are at the time of travel.
| Age | Passport and IMUGA | Green Tax | Other points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1 | Own passport, own IMUGA | Exempt | Exempt from yellow fever certificate rule |
| 1 to under 2 | Own passport, own IMUGA | Exempt | Infant fares; no seaplane baggage allowance on Trans Maldivian |
| 2 to 11 | Own passport, own IMUGA | Charged at the full per-night rate | Child rates for transfers and meals vary by property |
| 12 to 17 | Own passport, own IMUGA | Charged | Often counted as adults by resorts and airlines |
Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night at resorts, or USD 6 at smaller inhabited-island guesthouses. Under 2s pay nothing.
Proof of accommodation and return travel for children
Each child must be named on the family's return tickets and included in the accommodation booking. A villa booked for "2 adults" when you arrive with two children can raise questions at immigration and at the resort.
Tell the property the ages of every child when you book. Resorts set occupancy limits by villa type, and children usually count.
The detailed rules are in our guides to proof of accommodation and proof of return travel.
Travelling with one parent or with grandparents
The Maldives Immigration tourist visa page does not publish a specific consent-letter rule for children. Airlines and border officers anywhere can still ask who is responsible for a child.
As a precaution, carry these when a child travels without both parents:
- The child's birth certificate, or a clear copy.
- A short signed consent letter from the absent parent or parents, with their IC numbers and phone numbers.
- A copy of the absent parent's IC or passport photo page.
- Guardianship or custody papers, if they apply.
These papers cost little to prepare and can save a long conversation at the counter. Check with your airline for any rule of its own on unaccompanied minors.
A worked example: a family of four from Johor Bahru
Farid, Nurul and their children, aged 7 and 18 months, fly from Johor Bahru to KLIA, then on to Male. They need four passports, four IMUGA declarations and four names on both e-tickets.
At a small guesthouse for 4 nights, Green Tax applies to three of them, because the toddler is under two. That is 3 guests x 4 nights x USD 6 = USD 72, about RM294 at RM4.09 per USD.
Their booking confirmation lists two adults and two children with ages. Nurul carries the children's birth certificates as a backup, even though both parents travel.
Filing IMUGA for children
A parent can complete each child's declaration, one after another, with the child's passport open. Each child gets a separate QR code.
Name each saved QR code after the child, and keep it with that child's passport. The IMUGA step-by-step guide covers the form itself.
Which families need to plan further
Families with babies should choose flights and transfers with care. Trans Maldivian gives infants under two no baggage allowance, so the baby's bag counts against yours.
Families with several children should give themselves an extra evening for paperwork. Families that include grandparents should check older passports too.
When the documents are sorted, look at what the trip will cost. Our guide on Maldives trip costs from Malaysia shows how child pricing changes the total.
