Malaysians get a free tourist visa on arrival in the Maldives. You do not apply at an embassy or buy an e-visa: you qualify at the airport by showing the right documents.
The rules below come from the Maldives Immigration tourist visa page, checked on 12 October 2026. For every other paperwork topic, start at the entry and travel paperwork hub.
Do Malaysians need a visa for the Maldives?
Not in advance. Every tourist, Malaysians included, receives a tourist visa on arrival if they meet the entry conditions, and there is no visa fee.
The only thing you submit before flying is the IMUGA Traveller Declaration. It is free and is filed online no earlier than 96 hours before you land.
The five conditions officers check
Maldives Immigration lists the conditions plainly. Use this table as your pre-flight check, with the fix for each one if you are short.
| Condition | What it means for you | If you are not ready |
|---|---|---|
| Passport with MRZ, valid 1 month+ | Standard Malaysian passport, not an extended-validity one | Renew at JIM before booking flights |
| Confirmed return or onward ticket | A ticket out of Male, booked, not a hold | Book the return now, even on a flexible fare |
| Prepaid booking at a registered property | Registered resort, hotel or guesthouse, paid | Ask the property for a paid confirmation |
| Enough funds for the stay | No fixed amount published | Carry a card plus some USD cash |
| IMUGA Traveller Declaration | One per person, including infants | File it within 96 hours of arrival |
Each row has its own detailed guide. See passport validity rules, proof of accommodation, proof of return travel and proof of funds.
What happens at the Velana immigration counter?
You hand over your passport, the IMUGA QR code (on your phone or printed) and, if asked, your booking and return ticket. Most holiday arrivals are processed quickly once documents are in order.
The official page is clear that meeting the requirements does not guarantee entry. The officer decides admission, so keep every document easy to show rather than buried in email.
The Maldives also requires you to meet the entry rules of your next destination. For a straight return to KLIA this is simple for Malaysians, but it matters if you continue to a third country.
How long is the visa, and can you extend it?
The tourist visa is usually granted for up to 30 days. The official tourist visa page we read does not print that figure, so check the date written on your arrival stamp.
Almost every Malaysian holiday is 3 to 7 nights, so length rarely matters. If you plan a long stay, contact Maldives Immigration about an extension before the stamp runs out.
Common reasons a trip runs into trouble
Most problems start at check-in at KLIA, not in Male. Airlines refuse boarding when documents look short of the destination's rules, because they carry the cost of returning you.
- Passport close to expiry. Maldives asks for 1 month, but some airlines apply stricter rules, so read the passport guide.
- Booking not paid. A "reserve now, pay later" hotel reservation is not a prepaid booking.
- No return ticket. One-way tickets with a plan to "buy later" fail the itinerary rule.
- Missing IMUGA for a child. Every traveller needs their own declaration.
- A paid "visa service" from a lookalike website. The process is free.
A simple timeline from booking to landing
Spread the paperwork across your planning so nothing lands on the night before the flight.
- When you start planning: check your passport expiry date against your return date plus at least one month, and against your airline's own rule.
- When you book: pay the accommodation in full or get written confirmation that the booking is prepaid, and book the return flight at the same time.
- One week before: save booking confirmations, e-tickets and a card statement or banking app screenshot in one phone folder, plus a printed copy.
- Within 96 hours of landing: file the IMUGA declaration for every traveller on the official portal and save each QR code.
- On arrival: keep passports, QR codes and the booking ready in the immigration queue.
Leaving is simpler. The departure declaration was scrapped in August 2024, so you only show your passport and boarding pass on the way home.
Who this applies to, and when to check further
These rules cover Malaysians on a normal holiday: honeymooners, families, local-island budget trips and resort stays alike. Families should also read the entry rules for Malaysian children.
Check further if you travel on business, plan to work, hold an emergency passport or transit a yellow fever risk country. Malaysia has no mission in Male, and the High Commission in Colombo covers the Maldives, so sort passport issues before you leave.
Once paperwork is settled, the next big question is budget. Our guide on how much a Maldives trip costs from Malaysia shows where the ringgit goes.
